S. Venkitaramanan, the 18th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, passed away in Chennai at the age of 92. He held the position from December 1990 to December 1992. Before his tenure as RBI Governor, Venkitaramanan served as the finance secretary in the Ministry of Finance from 1985 to 1989 and was also advisor to the government of Karnataka.
Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palcios Crowned Miss Universe 2023
Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palacios was crowned Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd edition of the pageant, held this year in El Salvador.
Palacios received the crown and sash from her predecessor, R'Bonney Gabriel from the United States.
This is the first time a contestant from Nicaragua has won the contest, with Thailand's Anntonia Porsild and Australia's Moraya Wilson rounding out the top three.

World-renowned Art Historian B. N. Goswamy Dies
Eminent art historian and art critic B. N. Goswamy, who ruled the hearts of art lovers like few before him, passed away. He was 90.
Born on August 15, 1933, the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee was best-known for his works on the Pahari style of paintings.
Fondly known as BNG in art circles, Mr. Goswamy authored more than 26 books on the subjects of Pahari paintings, miniature paintings, court painters, and masters of Indian paintings among others.
Acclaimed British author AS Byatt, who won the 1990 Booker Prize for her best-selling romance novel "Possession", died at the age of 87.
The novelist, who was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2009 for "The Children's Book", was made a dame in 1999.
Other accolades during her career, which produced 24 novels and works of criticism, included winning the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction.
Her books have been translated into dozens of languages.
She was awarded the Erasmus Prize in 2016, for her "inspiring contribution to life writing", and the Pak Kyongni Prize in 2017.
In 2018 she received the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.

Freedom Fighter and Communist Leader N. Sankaraiah Passed Away
N. Sankaraiah, a freedom fighter, founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one of the tallest leaders of the Left movement in the country, died at the age of 102.
Sankaraiah's journey as a revolutionary began at the American College in Madurai. His father wanted him to become a lawyer but his participation in the freedom struggle led to his arrest, days before his final examinations. He spent a total of eight years in prison, both before and after Independence, a time that shaped his belief in communism and social justice.
Sankaraiah was honoured with the prestigious 'Thagaisal Thamizhar' Award by the DMK government in 2021. He donated the prize money from the award for Covid-19 relief.

Shital Mahajan Becomes First Woman to Skydive from Mt Everest
Shital Mahajan, a well-known Indian skydiver, achieved a new feat by becoming the first woman in the world to jump off a helicopter from the height of 21,500 ft in front of Mt Everest. Mahajan a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award Padma Shri and a holder of several skydiving records, completed skydiving in the front side of Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world.
