Army Conducts 'Prachand Shakti' Exercise in UP

  • In a major step towards battlefield modernisation, the Ram Division of the India Army conducted a high-impact exercise titled 'Prachand Shakti' at the Kharga Corps Field Training Area, in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut.
  • The exercise focused on the employment of disruptive technologies by infantry units in Strike Corps operations, showcasing the Army's technological transformation in real-time combat scenarios. According to the Indian Army, this event highlighted the changing dynamics of warfare, where Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), AI-enabled systems, loitering munitions, and autonomous platforms are playing a pivotal role in redefining operational capabilities.

India-Greece Conduct PASSEX to Boost Naval Cooperation

  • The navies of India and Greece held a joint passing exercise (PASSEX) off the coast of Mumbai, which enhanced maritime interoperability between the two countries,.
  • INS Tarkash had participated in the PASSEX, along with the Hellenic Navy Ship HS Psara.
  • The exercise saw tactical manoeuvres, replenishment-at-sea approaches, surface firing and cross-deck landings, and culminated in a steam past.
  • During the exercise, the navies had the opportunity to exchange best practices and enhance maritime interoperability.

Indian Army Launches Operation SHIVA 2025 for Amarnath Yatra Security

  • The Indian Army launched Operation SHIVA 2025 to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation involves heavy deployment of troops, modern surveillance tools, and disaster response measures. The security drive is vital due to increased threats from Pakistan-backed groups this year (2025).
  • As part of Operation SHIVA 2025, the Army has deployed over 8,500 troops along the northern and southern routes of the Yatra. This effort is in close coordination with the civil administration and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). A multi-layered counter-terror grid, supported by advanced surveillance, has been set up to monitor any suspicious activity.

Japanese Coast Guard Ship at Chennai for Joint Exercises

  • The Japan Coast Guard Ship JCGS Itsukushima was at the Chennai Port as part of its 'Global Ocean Voyage Training' programme.
  • The visit highlighted the deep and enduring bond between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG).
  • During its week-long port call at Chennai, the crew of the visiting ship participated in a series of activities, including official courtesy calls, reciprocal ship visits, and joint training and interactive sessions aimed at fostering mutual cooperation and understanding.
  • The JCGS Itsukushima also participated in a joint sea exercise named 'Jaa Mata' ('see you later' in Japanese) with the ICG. The exercise focused on enhancing coordination and operational synergy at sea.

Indian Navy Inducts 'Nistar', First Indigenous Diving Support Vessel

  • The Indian Navy marked the induction of its first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV), Nistar. The vessel was formally handed over by Hindustan Shipyard Limited during a ceremony held in Visakhapatnam.
  • Built in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), Nistar is a highly specialised warship equipped to conduct Deep Sea Diving and Rescue Operations—an advanced capability possessed by only a select few navies globally.
  • The name Nistar, derived from Sanskrit, means liberation, rescue, or salvation.

Taiwan's Military Exercise to Defend against China

  • Taiwan's annual military exercise, Han Kuang, began as the island ramps up its defence against a possible invasion from China.
  • Billed as the largest and longest one so far, this year's (2025) Han Kuang will last for about 10 days.
  • While it is aimed at readying Taiwan's population for a possible attack, it is also meant to publicly showcase the island's defences and send a clear signal to Beijing.
  • Held annually since 1984, Han Kuang sees thousands of troops take part in large-scale land, sea and air exercises that showcase Taiwan's latest military hardware.

Indian Navy Signs Contract with BEL for Implementation of NMDA Project

  • The Indian Navy signed a contract with a major defence PSU for the implementation of the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) Project towards strengthening maritime and coastal security.
  • The contract was signed in the presence of Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, and Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, Manoj Jain.
  • The project will bring in an integrated approach to data collation, analysis and information sharing among the various maritime stakeholders.
