Gukesh Shatters Record to Become Youngest World Champion

  • Indian Grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju made history by becoming the youngest-ever world champion after defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in the decisive 14th game of the World Chess Championship match in Singapore. At just 18 years old, Gukesh also became the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to claim the classical chess world championship title.
  • Gukesh shattered the record previously held by Russian legend Garry Kasparov, who had become the youngest world chess champion at the age of 22 in 1985.

Afridi Becomes Youngest to Achieve 100 Wickets in All Formats

  • Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi cemented his place in cricket history by becoming the youngest bowler to take 100 wickets in all three formats of the game. He achieved this remarkable milestone during the first T20I against South Africa.
  • Afridi has 116 wickets in 31 Tests, 112 wickets in 56 ODIs, and 100 wickets in 74 T20Is.
  • Afridi joined an exclusive club of bowlers who have taken 100 wickets in all formats, alongside cricketing legends like Lasith Malinga, Shakib Al Hasan, and Tim Southee.

Saudi Arabia Set to Host FIFA World Cup 2034

  • Saudi Arabia was officially announced as the host of the FIFA World Cup 2034, while the 2030 edition will take place in Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Also, the 2030 World Cup, which will also be the 100th anniversary of the showpiece will be hosted in six different countries, on 3 different continents.
  • This is the latest caveat that Saudi Arabia received after being named as hosts for the 2034 Asian Games as well as the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

20th Asian Women's Handball Championship

  • The 20th Asian Women's Handball Championship concluded, with Japan clinching its second-ever championship title by defeating South Korea 25-24 in a thrilling final. Japan's victory marked a historic moment as they ended South Korea's dominance in the competition, which had seen them win the title seven times in a row.
  • India matched their best-ever finish at the Asian Women's Handball Championship 2024 securing sixth place after a 41-30 loss to the People's Republic of China
  • India was the host country and the tournament was held in New Delhi.

Afghanistan Extends Trott's Contract by 1 Year

  • Jonathan Trott will continue as Afghanistan's head coach for another year after the country's cricket board extended his contract through 2025.
  • The announcement came a few months ahead of next year's (2025) Champions Trophy, where Afghanistan will make their maiden appearance.
  • The former England batter has been Afghanistan's head coach since July 2022, and under his guidance, the team has made impressive strides in international cricket.

PM Modi Hails Indian Contingent's Historic Performance at Asia Pacific Deaf Games

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian contingent for its historic performance at the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Kuala Lumpur and said that the talented athletes had brought immense pride to the nation.
  • The Indian contingent recorded a 55-medal haul at the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games, an 11-time increase over its last participation in 2015 when it had won five medals.
  • The 68-member Indian contingent captured eight 8, 18 silver and 29 bronze medals and finished fifth among 21 countries, its best-ever performance in the quadrennial event since its inaugural edition in 1984.

Haryana Dominates 2024 Senior National Wrestling Championship

  • Haryana continued its dominance in Indian wrestling, topping both the men's and women's team rankings at the 2024 Senior National Wrestling Championship in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The event took place at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium, where Haryana's women's team clinched eight out of the 10 gold medals on offer, while the men's team secured 4 gold across all weight categories.
  • In the women's competition, Haryana emerged as the top team with 235 points, followed by Maharashtra with 150 points and Delhi with 106 points.
  • Haryana finished first in the freestyle team rankings with 190 points, narrowly ahead of the Services Selection Board (179 points) and Delhi (143 points).

  • Indian driver Kush Maini made history by becoming the first Indian to win the FIA F2 Constructors' World Championship, a monumental achievement in the world of motorsport. 
  • This victory, secured with Invicta Racing, caps off a landmark year for Maini, who earlier achieved another milestone by becoming the first Indian to claim an F2 pole position. 
  • Despite facing challenges throughout the season, Maini's consistency and pivotal contributions helped Invicta Racing clinch the title, a testament to his talent and resilience.

9-Year-Old Aarit Kapil Stuns Chess Grandmaster

  • Nine-year-old Aarit Kapil, a budding chess prodigy from Delhi, made history by becoming the youngest Indian to defeat a chess Grandmaster. In a thrilling encounter during the ninth round of the KIIT International Open Tournament, Aarit emerged victorious against Raset Ziatdinov, a 66-year-old Grandmaster from the United States. 
  • At just 9 years, 2 months, and 18 days old, Aarit not only set a national record but also became the third-youngest player globally to achieve this feat under classical time control.
