The 20th Chennai International Film Festival Thrown Open

  • The 20th Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) was formally launched with an inaugural ceremony. The eight-day film festival (December 15-22) was inaugurated by Minister for Information and Publicity M.P. Saminathan, who expressed his elation that the festival was taking place in a grand manner, especially after the pandemic.
  • Organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) in association with PVR Cinemas, the CIFF films will be screened at Sathyam Multiplex and Anna Cinemas in Chennai.
  • Apart from the world cinema section, 15 films which include three Tamil movies will be screened as part of the Indian Panorama. As a part of the Tamil film competition section, 12 films will be screened. The jury this year will select and give away nine awards in this category.

The 20th Edition of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival

  • The 20th Edition of the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival was held in Kathmandu, Nepal. This year, the festival was held from December 8 to 12, 2022. The festival resumed its physical screening after two years, because of the pandemic and showcased numerous films from across the world.
  • The key focus of the film fest was on the mountain communities and cultures to Nepalese audiences. This year, the audience witnessed more than 60 films from 30 different countries, at the Rastriya Sabga Griha and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) Exhibition Road.
  • The theme of the film fest was 'Sustainable Summits' and featured documentaries, fiction, shorts as well as experimental and animated films.
  • Indian film Bandhua (Bonded), directed by Shobhit Jain was also featured in the International Competitive Film category along with films like Ayena, Before You were my Mother, and Matto ki Saikil.

MP: Country's First Infantry Museum to be Inaugurated in Mhow

  • The country's first infantry museum will be inaugurated in Mhow cantonment in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh on December 16. Final preparations are underway in Mhow cantonment for the inauguration of the Infantry Research Centre and Museum.
  • The museum will showcase Infantry Corps' history from 1747 to 2020, in which the sacrifice of valour and valiant soldiers have been preserved in statues, murals and photo galleries.
  • The first phase of the museum has been completed, while the work on the second phase is underway.
  • The museum, housed in a three-storey building spread on two acres of land, is being built in three phases.

ASI Begins Restoration Work of Iconic Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow

  • The Archeological Survey of India started the restoration work of the iconic Rumi Darwaza to plug cracks and strengthen the over two century-old Nawab-era structure.
  • The restoration work will be completed in around five to six months and the local administration has stopped the movement of traffic under the three arches of the structure.
  • ASI officials said that besides damage to the parapets, the monument has also developed cracks in its arch and water seepage has also been seen in its central portion.
  • Rumi Darwaza is a 238-year-old structure and is in dire need of restoration work.
  • Located in the Hussainabad area of Lucknow, Rumi Darwaza is part of historical Nawab era structures which are tourist hotspots in the city.
  • Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, who ruled Awadh from 1775 to 1797, shifted the capital from Faizabad to Lucknow in 1775. Nine years later in 1784, he commissioned the construction of Asafi Imambara (Bada Imambara) and Rumi Darwaza in the middle of a devastating famine as an effort to give employment and revenue to the public, according to historians.

Ministers of India and Bangladesh Inaugurate Sylhet Festiva

  • Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North-eastern Region G. Kishan Reddy and Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen inaugurate the Sylhet Festival 2022 at Silchar in the Barak Valley of Assam.
  • State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Mizoram Governor K. Hari Babu and Assam Industries & Commerce and Public Enterprises and Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora are also expected to be attending the 5-day festival which is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture and India Foundation. Around 100 dignitaries from Bangladesh will also join the programme. The program is being organised in the context of the historical relationship between Sylhet and Barak Valley of south Assam.

Jeanne Dielman: Film Directed by Woman Picked as Best Ever

  • A film directed by a woman was chosen as the greatest of all time by a group of experts.
  • Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, directed by Chantal Akerman, topped the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound poll.
  • It is the first time a work directed by a woman reached the top ten. The poll, which runs every decade, was criticised for a lack of diversity.
  • The winning spot was held for 40 years by Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.
  • It was overtaken in 2012 by Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.
  • Jeanne Dielman, released in 1975, is the story of a Belgian widow who turns to prostitution to make ends meet, but kills one of her clients. The film runs for almost three and a half hours.
  • Though not as well-known outside the world of film criticism as previous winners, it has been lauded as a "masterpiece", and a ground-breaking piece of feminist film.
