Chola Queen Sembiyan Mahadevi's Bronze Idol, Stolen in 1929, Found in Washington Museum

  • A three-and-a-half feet idol of Chola queen Sembiyan Mahadevi, stolen from a temple in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam in 1929, was traced to the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington DC, USA, by the Idol Wing police, which had initiated steps to retrieve the idol.
  • The exquisite bronze idol was purchased by the Freer Gallery of Art from Hagop Kevorkian in New York in 1929 for an undisclosed price.

Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2022

  • Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2022 is being held from July 16, 2022 to August 14, 2022 in New Delhi.
  • This is the 22nd edition of the Bharat Rang Mahotsav.
  • It is being held as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, under name "22nd Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2022 (Azadi Segment).
  • Event was inaugurated by Arjun Ram Meghwal, Malini Awasthi, and Arvind Kumar.
  • The 22nd Bharat Rang Mahotsav is being held by National School of Drama (NSD) New Delhi.
  • The 22nd edition of the event aims to showcase incidents and raise awareness about unsung heroes of India's freedom struggle who have not made to India's history. For instance, in 1913, tribal people were brutally tortured and killed in Maangarh. But this incident is hardly known to people. Thus, theatre artists can prepare plays based on these incidents.
  • National School of Drama started the Bharat Rang Mahotsav two decade ago, in a bid to revive the growth and development of theatre across India. It is a national festival that is held annually to showcase the work of most creative theatre workers in country.

Sannati: Ancient Buddhist Site Finally in Focus after 20 Years

  • Left almost unattended to for 20 years after it came to light through the excavation by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) between 1994 and 2001, the ancient Buddhist site on the bank of Bhima River near Kanaganahalli (forming part of Sannati site) in Kalaburagi district, Karnataka finally got some attention.
  • The ASI has now come up with a plan for the conservation of the site at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crore and work has just begun. ASI Regional Director (South) D. Maheshwari and Circle Superintendent (Hampi) Nikhil Das are camping at the site monitoring work.
  • The conservation project taken up now envisages the resetting of the remains of Maha Stupa retrieved in the excavation to their original positions without much ornamentation and reconstructing of fallen portions of the Ayaka platforms using newly-fabricated bricks of the same size, shape and texture.

Mangarh Hill to be Declared Monument of National Importance

  • The Modi government is exploring the possibility of declaring Mangarh Hill as a monument of national importance. National Monument Authority chairman Tarun Vijay submitted a report to Union Minister of Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) on the matter, and said doing so, will be a tribute to the tribal freedom fighters who lost their lives.
  • The Hill, situated at the Gujarat-Rajasthan border, is a site of a tribal uprising where a massacre of over 1500 Bhil tribal freedom fighters took place in 1913. The place is also known as the Adivasi Jallianwala, and there has been a demand to demand to build a memorial.
  • On November 17, 1913, British forces opened fire on tribals gathered at the site who were holding a meeting in protest, led by a leader from the community Govind Guru, killing over 1,500.

Delhi to Host India's Biggest Shopping Festival in 2023

  • Delhi will host its first ever government-backed shopping festival from January 28 to February 26, 2023, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced. The festival will have 200 concerts for entertainment, food walks and will also offer huge discounts on products.
  • This will be the biggest ever shopping festival in India.
  • The Delhi Shopping Festival was one of the ambitious projects proposed in the Rozgaar Budget 2022-23 presented by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in March this year. Kejriwal said the festival will boost employment and the city's economy.
