Satyabrata Mukherjee, Mithun Chakraborty, Usha Uthup get Padma Bhushan

Former West Bengal BJP president Satyabrata Mukherjee (posthumously), actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty and singer Usha Uthup were honoured with Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in the country.
Mukherjee was minister of state for Chemicals and Fertilisers and Commerce and Industries in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government at the Centre from 1999 to 2004.
After Mamata Banerjee became West Bengal Chief Minister, Mithun Chakraborty became a Rajya Sabha member of the TMC. However, Chakraborty stayed away from politics allegedly after he was summoned by the CBI in the chit-fund corruption case. Before the 2021 assembly election, he campaigned for the BJP.
Pop singer from Bengal (she was born in Mumbai), Usha Uthup started her career as a nightclub singer. Uthup sang for many Bollywood and other language films. She also acted in a few movies.

Indian-born Lawyer Ajit Mishra Conferred with Freedom of the City of London Award

Ajit Mishra, a prominent India-born lawyer in the UK, was conferred the prestigious 'Freedom of the City of London Award' for his outstanding contribution to legal and public life. Mishra is the Founder and Chair of UK India Legal Partnership (UKILP).
He is a dual-qualified lawyer and corporate partner at Knights. With more than two decades of professional experience in leading M&A and commercial transactions between India and the UK, Mishra has been a Partner and head of the India desk at some of the best domestic and international law firms.

Late Supreme Court Judge Justice Fathima M. Beevi Awarded Padma Bhushan

The first woman to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India, Justice M. Fathima Beevi, was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan.
Justice Beevi received India's third-highest civilian award in the field of Public Affairs.
The former Supreme Court judge passed away aged 96 in November 2023. Justice Beevi was the first Muslim woman to be appointed to the higher judiciary in the country.
She was born in Kerala in 1927. In 1950, she topped the Bar Council exam becoming the first woman to receive a Bar Council gold medal.
She started her career as an advocate in Kerala and worked her way up to become a district and sessions judge in 1974. In 1980, she joined the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and was appointed as a High Court judge in 1983.
She made history in 1989 by becoming the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court.

Parbati Baruah, India's 1st Female Mahout Honoured with Padma Shri

As India celebrated its 75th Republic Day, the country recognised the contributions of 132 citizens with Padma Awards for their contributions to various fields.
Among the long list of awardees was Parbati Baruah, popularly known as 'Hasti Kanya', who gained fame as India's first woman elephant mahout. She was conferred the Padma Shri Award for her contributions to animal conservation and overcoming preconceptions to carve out a niche for herself in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Foxconn CEO Young Liu honoured with Padma Bhushan

Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn Group CEO and Chairman Young Liu was conferred the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, on the eve of 75th Republic Day.
As per an official announcement, Liu was the only foreigner among the list of 17 Padma Bhushan recipients.
Under his leadership, Foxconn started making iPhones in India in 2019 after he took over the reins as CEO and chairman from Terry Gou in June 2019.

Former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur Awarded Bharat Ratna Posthumously

Former Bihar Chief Minister, Karpoori Thakur, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian award. This recognition is a significant acknowledgement of Thakur's contributions to Indian politics and social reform.
Karpoori Thakur, born in January 1924, was a prominent figure in Bihar's political landscape. Known for his deep connection with the backward classes, Thakur's political journey was marked by his steadfast commitment to social justice. He served as Bihar's Chief Minister twice, first from December 1970 to June 1971 and again from December 1977 to April 1979.
Thakur was a strong advocate for the underprivileged, championing the cause of the socially and economically marginalised sections of society. His tenure as Chief Minister was notable for implementing progressive policies, including land reforms and initiatives aimed at the uplifting of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

BCCI Awards: Ex-coach Ravi Shastri Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Ravi Shastri, India's 1983 World Cup-winning member, and the former national head coach, received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award in the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) Awards). With this, the former all-rounder joined his ex-teammates Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Syed Kirmani, and Kris Srikkanth amongst others in receiving the C. K. Nayudu Award for lifetime achievement.
Shubman Gill received the Polly Umrigar award for the best men's cricketer of the year for 2023. Jasprit Bumrah won the honour in 2019, a year after making his Test debut. Gill scored 2154 runs in international cricket, most by any batter in 2023. He hit 7 hundreds, including an ODI double hundred and his maiden T20I century.
The awards were first given in 2006–07. The C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award was first presented in 1994. It is the highest honour bestowed by BCCI on a former player and is considered as one of the most prestigious awards in cricket.
