IIT-Gandhinagar Develops Gaze Sensitive, Virtual Reality-based Social Interactive System for Indi...

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn), has developed a virtual reality-based system that can deliver individualised feedback based on the dynamic gaze patterns of individuals with autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder.
  • The system, 'Towards design of multi-user virtual reality-based interactive social communication platform for individuals with Autism and its implications on eye gaze', developed under Prof. Uttama Lahiri, an associate professor at electrical engineering department, works on eye-tracking measures that are considered to be very essential since individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are often distracted and have less attention span.

IIT-Bombay to Launch 16th Annual Entrepreneurship Fest- E-Summit 2021

  • With an aim to foster the spirit of self-reliance among youth and help them get exposure to entrepreneurship, E-Cell IIT-Bombay will launch the 16th edition of their annual entrepreneurship fest – 'E-Summit 2021: A Blizzard of Ingenuity'. Presented by Westbridge Capital and powered by IDFC bank, E-Summit is scheduled for February 6th-7th and will be held virtually due to the pandemic. The event comprises speaker sessions, workshops, competitions, hackathons, internship job fairs, etc.
  • The event will have "The Ten Minute A Million" or more popularly known as TTMM. Under the initiative, shortlisted startups will get a chance to make a 10-minute pitch in front of a panel of India's best angel investors, followed by an on-the-spot decision on financial backing. Selected startups have a chance to secure backing of Rs 20 lakh and beyond.

India's First 'Gender Park' in Kerala's Kozhikode

  • The Kerala government is all set to launch Rs 300 crore three-tower 'Gender Park' in Kozhikode. The park will become functional on the occasion of the second edition of the International Conference on Gender Equality (ICGE-II). The park will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, in between February 11-13 that will also mark the inauguration of the second edition of ICGE-II.
  • The gender park was established by the government of Kerala in 2013. It is an initiative that works towards gender equality and empowerment in Kerala. The headquartered for the initiative is in the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • However, the main campus is at Silver Hills, Kozhikode. The campus has an area of 24-acre. The park has been set with its main focus on gender justice.
  • The platform will provide an environment for policy analysis, research, capacity development, advocacy, economic and social initiative. The park will be operational under the Department of Social Justice. This space is the first of its kind across the world.

STEPapp Ties Up with Bihar Govt. to Support Girl Child Education

  • STEPapp (Student Talent Enhancement Program Application) app has tied up with the Bihar government to support girl child education in the state.
  • Educating girls is one of the factors that bring growth prospects in the development of India. Every student, every child, irrespective of their gender, has the right and should be given the privilege to get a quality education.
  • The STEPapp app has been implemented in more than 3500 schools in Pan India. With more than 27 lakh downloads and more than 31 lakh users, STEPapp has collaborated with the state and central governments to implement the e-learning solution in schools all over the country.

Sikkim Asks Schools to Introduce 11 Local Languages in Curriculum

  • The Sikkim government has asked all schools in the state to introduce 11 vernaculars in their curriculum from the next academic session for students to pick one as second language.
  • As of now, students in state-run schools are given Bhutia, Nepali, Lepcha and Limbu as options for second language, and seven more would be added to the list.
  • Private schools will have to ensure that all 11 local languages, including Tamang, Gurung, Mangar, Sherpa, Mukhia, Rai and Newar, are made a part of the curriculum.

CSIR-Ladakh Inks MoU for S&T Development

  • Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the union territory of Ladakh signed an agreement for the development of the Union Territory through Science and Technology (S&T) interventions.
  • The agreement was signed by CSIR-IIIM Director D. Srinivas Reddy and Rigzin Samplel who is the Commissioner Secretary of Agriculture and Horticulture, Ladakh UT.
  • The MoU was signed with the aim of establishing a knowledge partnership between CSIR and the Ladakh UT.
  • It seeks to develop the areas like exploration of natural resources, introduction of cash crops in the region and bioresource utilisation which is endemic to Ladakh.
  • CSIR was established by the Government of India in September 1942. It was established as an autonomous body which now is the largest research and development organisation in India. The body is mainly funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is functional as an autonomous body under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The body is involved into various research and development activities such as structural engineering aerospace engineering, ocean sciences, metallurgy, chemicals, food, life sciences, petroleum, leather, and environmental science.

BITS Launches Management School

  • Engineering institute BITS Pilani Group launched a management school – BITSoM or BITS School of Management. The school will offer 120 seats.
  • The admission will be based on CAT, GMAT, GRE. Along with a two-year degree, the institute will offer specialisation in new-age courses including entrepreneurship and innovation, e-commerce and digital leadership, finance, and skill-specific courses including data science, design thinking among others.
  • The school has been set up with a budget of over Rs. 1500 crore and will be set-up in Mumbai. In the interim, the institute will function from BITS Powai campus.
  • The institute claims that it would bring faculty from leading business schools across the globe. This will include professors from top B-Schools such as NYU Stern School of Business, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Singapore Management University, and Kellogg School of Management, in addition to leading industry practitioners, BITS group claim.

India Ranks 10th in Asia-Pacific Personalised Health Index

  • India ranked 10th out of 11 Asia Pacific countries in a newly-launched health index to measure the progress towards personalised healthcare.
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report 'Asia-Pacific Personalised Health Index' measures the readiness of 11 health systems across the region–Australia, China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and New Zealand–in adopting personalised healthcare, enabling the right care to be tailored to the right person at the right time.
  • The 'Personalised Health Index' measures performance against 27 different indicators of personalised health across four categories called 'Vital Signs'. These include Policy Context, Health Information, Personalised Technologies and Health Services.

Microsoft Launches Taj Mahal Inspired Engineering Hub in Noida

  • After Bengaluru and Hyderabad, tech giant Microsoft has set its sights on Noida. The American multinational launched a new India Development Centre (IDC) facility at Delhi-NCR. This new addition is set to serve as a premier hub for driving cutting-edge engineering and innovation.
  • The centre will build on Microsoft's commitment to tap India's world-class engineering talent and create solutions for a global impact.
  • Rajiv Kumar, Managing Director of Microsoft India Research and Development Pvt Ltd, said that the NCR workplace will represent a critical expansion of world-class technology talent and exceptional engineering presence in India.
  • The IDC in NCR will collaborate with Microsoft Teams worldwide to design and create products that drive digital innovations.
