David Beckham to Be Knighted in King Charles III's Birthday Honours

  • Football icon David Beckham will be knighted next week as part of King Charles III's birthday honours, marking a significant moment in his journey from sports stardom to public service and philanthropy. The 50-year-old former England captain, who earned an OBE in 2003, will now reportedly be elevated to 'Sir David Beckham,' recognising his contributions not just to football but to British society, charitable work, and environmental advocacy.

New Category Introduced Under National e-Governance Awards 2025

  • In a move to strengthen grassroots governance, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, in collaboration with the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, introduced a dedicated category under the National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) 2025 to recognise outstanding digital initiatives by Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). A first-of-its-kind recognition for PRIs, a new award category titled 'Grassroots Level Initiatives for Deepening Service Delivery at Gram Panchayats or Equivalent Traditional Local Bodies' was introduced to honour exemplary digital initiatives by Panchayats. This category aims to acknowledge the role of Gram Panchayats in enhancing ease of living and improving the quality of life through effective, transparent and citizen-centric service delivery.
  • After a rigorous multi-tier evaluation at the Block, District, State, and National levels, four Gram Panchayats emerged as winners from over 1.45 lakh entries received from 26 States and Union Territories under the newly introduced award category.
  • Gold Award: Rohini Gram Panchayat, Dhule District, Maharashtra
  • Silver Award: West Majlishpur Gram Panchayat, West Tripura District, Tripura
  • Jury Award: Palsana Gram Panchayat, Surat District, Gujarat
  • Jury Award: Suakati Gram Panchayat, Kendujhar District, Odisha

Kumar Mangalam Birla Honoured with USISPF Global Leadership Award 2025

  • Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, was conferred with the Global Leadership Award by the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) at its 8th annual Leadership Summit held in Washington, D.C. Recognised for his leadership and commitment to strengthening US-India economic ties. Birla was awarded alongside Arvind Krishna (IBM) and Toshiaki Higashihara (Hitachi). His group has invested over $15 billion in the U.S. generating significant employment and impact.

Tennis Legend Serena Williams Awarded Princess of Asturias for Sports 2025

  • Former tennis player Serena Williams has been awarded the Princess of Asturias for sports 2025. 
  • The award is one of the most prestigious in Spain and is given to members who have demonstrated excellence in various fields, including sports, arts, literature, and others. 
  • Williams is "one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport" and also were appreciative of her work outside the tennis court. 
  • The 43-year-old American won 73 career singles titles including 23 Grand Slams.

President of India Presents National Florence Nightingale Awards 2025

  • The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards for the year 2025 to the nurses at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 30, 2025.
  • The National Florence Nightingale Award was instituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India as a mark of recognition for the meritorious services of nurses.

India Shines in 2025 Breakthrough Prize for LHC Discoveries

  • India has once again demonstrated its prowess in global scientific collaboration as the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics has been awarded to teams involved in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments at CERN, Switzerland.
  • Indian researchers, who have long been key contributors to the ALICE and CMS experiments, are being celebrated for their critical roles in cutting-edge physics research that explores the building blocks of the universe.

Two Indian peacekeepers to be honoured posthumously on International Peacekeepers Day

  • Brigadier General Amitabh Jha, who served with the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), and Havildar Sanjay Singh, who was deployed with the U.N. Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), will be honoured posthumously with the Dag Hammarskjold medal at a solemn ceremony on May 29 on the occasion of International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, a statement said.
  • India is the fourth largest contributor of uniformed personnel to U.N. Peacekeeping.
  • During ceremonies at the world body's headquarters to mark Peacekeepers Day, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will lay a wreath to honour the more than 4,400 U.N. peacekeepers who have lost their lives since 1948.
