Science Awards to Get Makeover as Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar

On the lines of civilian awards, Government of India will now recognise scientists with Rashtriya Vigyan Puruskar under four categories — Vigyan Ratna, Vigyan Shri, Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, and Vigyan Team — said Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh.
This came days after the government released the finalised list of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardees that was held back for a year. The highest honour for young scientists retains the name Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.
Vigyan Ratna recognises the lifetime achievement of scientists, Vigyan Shri recognises distinguished contributions to a field, Vigyan Yuva Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar encourages young scientists who have made exceptional contributions in their field, and Vigyan Team recognises teams of three or more. The awards will commence in 2024.
The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards, given by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research since 1958 across seven domains, will now be given across 13 categories to young scientists up to the age of 45 for exceptional contributions in any field of science and technology.

Breakthrough Prize Foundation Announces the Winners of the 2024 Breakthrough Prizes

The Breakthrough Prize Foundation announced the winners of the 2024 Breakthrough Prizes, honouring an esteemed group of the world's most brilliant minds for impactful scientific discoveries, including a subset responsible for substantial progress in the understanding and treatment of major diseases.
The Breakthrough Prize, popularly known as the 'Oscars of Science', was created to celebrate the wonders of scientific age by founding sponsors Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, Julia and Yuri Milner, and Anne Wojcicki.
The Prize's latest slate of laureates include 11 winners of the Breakthrough Prizes in Life Sciences, Fundamental Physics, and Mathematics, sharing five $3 million prizes between them; 12 early-career physicists and mathematicians sharing six $100,000 New Horizons in Physics Prizes; and three women mathematicians who recently completed their PhDs, each receiving a $50,000 Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize. This year's prize money comes to a total of $15.75 million, bringing the amount conferred over the thirteen years of the Breakthrough Prize to $308 million.
Carl June and Michel Sadelain were named winners of Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences
John Cardy and Alexander Zamolodchikov were named winners of Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
Simon Brendle was named winner of Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics.

Rahul Mishra Awarded Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

Fashion designer Rahul Mishra was conferred with the insignia of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres at a function at the Residence of France. The French government's distinction Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) is bestowed upon persons who have distinguished themselves by their creativity in the field of art, culture, and literature or for their contribution to the influence of arts in France and throughout the world.
Ambassador of France to India Emmanuel Lenain presented the medal to Mishra for his career and connection to France.

Jagdeep Dhankhar Confers Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards to 84 performing artists in New Delhi. The special achievement awards were given to artists above the age of 75 from all over India who have not been bestowed any national honour yet.
The honour carries purse money of one lakh rupees along with tamrapatra and angavastra.
Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards is a national honour bestowed on performing artists as well as teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts.
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, also known as the Akademi Puraskar, is an award given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama. In 2003, the award consisted of Rs. 50,000, a citation, an angavastram and a tamrapatra (a brass plaque). In 2009, the cash prize was increased to Rs. 1,00,000.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi was first awarded in 1952.

Bar & Bench Bags Inaugural Jethmalani Prize for Legal Journalism

Bar & Bench emerged winner of the inaugural Jethmalani Prize for Legal Journalism under the Will of Steel Awards.
The award instituted by the Sunday Guardian Foundation to honour the birth centenary year of veteran lawyer late Ram Jethmalani was presented by Union Minister of State for Law & Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with Rajya Sabha MPs Mahesh Jethmalani and Kartikey Sharma at a ceremony held in New Delhi.
The other nominees to the award were Apoorva Mandhani (Assistant Editor at The Print) and Sadaf Modak (Principal Correspondent at The Indian Express).
Pallavi Saluja, Editor-in-Chief of Bar & Bench, received the award on behalf of the team from Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Taylor Swift Wins Top Honours at MTV's Video Music Awards

Taylor Swift won Best Pop Music Video and Song of the year at MTV's Video Music Awards, two of several trophies she was competing for as the most-nominated artist at the star-studded ceremony.
She went into the night with most nominations and left with four wins for 'Best Pop', 'Song of the year', 'Best direction' and 'Video of the year'.
Taylor Swift took home the top prize at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards for her "Anti-Hero" music video on a night full of surprises.

Pravin Kumar Wins James Dyson Award (India) 2023

Chennai-based engineer Pravin Kumar was deemed as the national winner for India of the James Dyson Award 2023. Kumar was selected for his innovation Mouseware, a movement-based technology designed for people with upper limb disabilities.
This technology enables control of smart devices by using the power of head movements, allowing individuals to effortlessly interact with digital devices.
The national winner Pravin Kumar received prize money of approximately Rs. 5 Lakh (£5,000) and will also represent India in the International round where final winners will be handpicked by Sir James Dyson.
