Stockholm World Water Week 2021

  • Stockholm World Water Week (SWWW) was held online from August 23 to 27, 2021 by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI).
  • Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) was the only civic body from India that was invited at the panel discussion on the topic "Zero Liquid Discharge Cities".
  • According to city municipal commissioner, Banchhanidhi Pani, by 2030 the city would be able to reuse 100% of sewage water after treatment.
  • The Stockholm World Water Week was held under the theme: 'Building Resilience Faster'.
  • WWW is a leading annual event that is organised to held discussions on global water issues. It is organized by SIWI since 1991. The weeklong event is attended by some 4,000 participants from 135 countries.

Ajit Doval Chairs 11th BRICS NSA Virtual Meeting

  • The 11th meeting of the BRICS High Representatives Responsible for National Security was held, via video conferencing. The National Security Advisor of India Ajit Doval hosted the meeting since India is the chair for the 2021 BRICS summit. The 15th BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in September 2021. The BRICS meeting of the NSA provided a platform for the five countries to strengthen political-security cooperation.
  • Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Gen Patrushev, Chinese Politburo Member Yang Jeichi, South African Deputy Minister of State Security Ncediso Goodenough Kodwa and Gen Augusto Heleno Ribeiro Pereira, Minister of State and Head of the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Presidency of Brazil attended the high-level meeting.
  • The BRICS NSA meeting adopted and recommended the BRICS counter-terrorism action plan for consideration by the BRICS Summit.
  • NSA Ajit Doval and other top security officials of the BRICS discussed the Afghanistan scenario, and developments in Iran, West Asia and the Gulf region.
  • The Action Plan aims to further strengthen existing mechanisms of cooperation in areas such as financing and combating terrorism, misuse of the internet by terrorists, curbing the travel of terrorists, border controls, protection of soft targets, information sharing, capacity building, and regional and international cooperation.

India Showcased Indigenous Fighter Aircraft at 'ARMY- 2021' in Moscow

  • India pitched its indigenously built fighter aircrafts at the International Military-Technical Forum 'ARMY-2021' in Moscow.
  • DRDO from India's pavilion displayed advanced defence technologies and along with Indian Defence Industries like Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Ordnance Factories.
  • Aircrafts like Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, LCA Tejas and Arjun Main Battle Tank (MK1A) were showcased at ARMY-2021.
  • Other aircrafts include- 8x-gun with longest range of 48 kilometers, Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C), Arjun Tank mark 1A, Surveillance Radar Rohini, Helina & Nag, Fire control radar, Akash missile and Carbine JVPC.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

  • The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is an international day celebrated August 23 of each year, the day designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade.
  • That date was chosen by the adoption of resolution 29 C/40 by the Organization's General Conference at its 29th session. The date is significant because, during the night of August 22 to August 23, 1791, on the island of Saint Domingue (now known as Haiti), an uprising began which set forth events which were a major factor in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
  • International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first celebrated in many countries, in particular in Haiti, on August 23, 1998, and in Senegal on August 23, 1999. Each year the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reminds the international community about the importance of commemorating this day. This date also pays tribute to those who worked hard to abolish slave trade and slavery throughout the world. This commitment and the actions used to fight against the system of slavery had an impact on the human rights movement.

World Senior Citizens' Day

  • World Senior Citizens' Day is celebrated on August 21. The day also acknowledges the contribution of elders to society as it only adds to their inclusiveness in society and growth.
  • On December 14, 1990, the first World Senior Citizens' Day was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations. However, the first celebration was marked in 1991. Ideally, it was former President of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan who officially founded the World Senior Citizens' Day.

Akshay Urja Diwas

  • India celebrates Indian Akshay Urja Diwas on August 20 every year. The main motive of celebrating this day is to make use of traditional energy having no side effects and using energy naturally like Biogas, Solar Energy, Wind Energy and Hydroelectrical Power etc.
  • India is known for its traditional ways of using things. Grounded to its roots, India's idea of using and popularising renewable energy goes back to centuries. olar Energy, Biogas, Wind Energy, Hydro-electrical power are some examples that India has been focusing on for ages. These also include carbon-neutral sources like sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.
  • At the first Akshay Urja Diwas in 2004 a commemorative stamp was released by the Prime Minister. A human chain of nearly 12,000 school children was formed in the national capital to promote a renewable future.

World Mosquito Day

  • To raise awareness and alertness about the disease caused by mosquitos, World Mosquito Day is observed annually on 20th August. Despite being very small or tiny in size, mosquitoes are the only predator in history that has lived through centuries and caused death through vector-borne diseases like malaria.
  • Due to their dangerous illness and disease, mosquitoes are counted among the world's deadliest that kills around 7 lakh people every year. Moreover, as per a survey of the world's deadliest animals, mosquitoes have topped the list.
  • Other than creating awareness, World Mosquito Day remembers Sir Ronald Ross who discovered and exposed the link between female mosquitoes and malaria.
  • This year amid the coronavirus pandemic, the theme of World Mosquito Day 2021 is "Reaching the zero-malaria target".

Piyush Goyal Chairs the 5th Meeting of BRICS Industry Ministers

  • Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal chaired the 5th meeting of BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting under the Chairship of India. The Industry Ministers of BRICS Countries (Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa) Mr. Xiao Yaqing Minister of Industry & IT of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Trade, Industry & Competition of the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Carlos Da Costa, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Economy, Government of Federative Republic of Brazil and Mr. Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and delegates attended the virtual meeting.
  • India chose the theme of BRICS@15: Intra BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus for its Chairship, this year.
  • The meeting concluded with the BRICS Industry Ministers reaffirming their commitment to work together as a group, complement strengths of each other, share best practices and learn from weaknesses, and move ahead in a positive and constructive manner to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
