University of East Anglia Announces Multiple Scholarships for Indian Students

  • The University of East Anglia (UEA) announced new scholarships for international students, across departments, at the university. Interested candidates will be able to apply for these scholarships at the official website of the university — uea.ac.uk.
  • The scholarships will be available to international students applying for post graduate taught courses in the academic year 2023-2024.

NTA Revises NEET UG 2023 Eligibility Criteria for Indian Candidates Abroad

  • The National Testing Agency (NTA) updated the eligibility criteria for OCI and PIO cardholders intending to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) in 2023. Indian medical aspirants living abroad can check the revised guidelines on the official NEET website.
  • As per the updated regulations, Indian citizens, NRIs, overseas citizens of India (OCI), persons of Indian origin (PIO), and foreign nationals are now eligible to apply for admission to medical, dental, ayurveda, siddha, unani and homeopathy colleges.

Nandini Gupta wins Femina Miss India 2023

  • The 59th edition of India's most prestigious pageant pulled off another season's grand finale in a historic ceremony at the Indoor Stadium, Khuman Lampak, Imphal, Manipur, the beautiful city which played the perfect host to the mesmerizing event.
  • Rajasthan's Nandini Gupta has been crowned Femina Miss India World 2023. Along with her, Delhi's Shreya Poonja became the first runner-up, while Manipur's Thounaojam Strela Luwang was crowned the 2nd runner-up.
  • 19-year-old Nandini hails from Kota, one of biggest coaching hubs in the country for engineering and medical aspirants. The beauty with brains hold a degree in Business Management, Nandini is dedicated towards taking up challenges and succeeding. Nandini dreamt of competing in the Miss India pageant since she was 10-year-old.

Modi Inaugurates AIIMS Guwahati, the First in Northeast

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of the Northeast, located in Guwahati.
  • During the inauguration, PM Modi also participated in the celebrations with Bihu dancers and drummers, making it a unique moment. Additionally, he laid the foundational stone of Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute and a new bridge that connects Palashbari-Sualkachi on the outskirts of Guwahati.
  • The AIIMS Guwahati has 750 beds and 30 AYUSH beds, with a capacity of 100 MBBS students. It will provide world-class health facilities to the people of the Northeast.

NFSU Becomes First Government University of India to Open a Campus Abroad

  • India's National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) opened its first overseas campus in Jinja, Uganda, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between India and Uganda. NFSU is the first government university of India to open a campus anywhere abroad.
  • NFSU is an institution of national importance and the world's first university dedicated exclusively to forensic sciences.
  • The campus in Uganda was established due to the high demand for courses in forensic sciences among African students on scholarships provided by the government of India.

SRCC Hosts Business Conclave

  • Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) hosted the Business Conclave from April 12 to April 14. This conclave is the annual flagship event of the college, and this year (2023) it returned offline for the first time after the pandemic.
  • Students got a chance to meet the prodigies of their fields in their campus. It is designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the latest trends and developments in business and to interact with leading experts in the field.
  • This year (2023), the Conclave followed the theme "Uniting Visionaries, Redefining Excellence", where the students challenged themselves and elevated their full potential. Students joined forces with industry leaders and innovators and participated in this event.

China Records World's First Human Death from H3N8 Bird Flu

  • A woman died from H3N8 bird flu in China, the World Health Organization reported – the first known human fatality from the avian influenza strain.
  • H3N8 is known to have been circulating since 2002 after first emerging in North American waterfowl. It is known to infect horses, dogs and seals.
  • It had not been detected in humans before two non-fatal cases emerged, both also in China, in April and May 2022.

Digital Library System e-Granthalaya Implemented in 100+ Uttarakhand Universities

  • The 'e-Granthalaya' portal was linked to over 100 higher educational institutions in Uttarakhand, providing online access to course books and research papers in various subjects for 1.9 lakh students and faculty members.
  • Higher Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat stated that the state is on track to achieve 100% digitisation of higher education in the near future.
  • The e-Granthalaya platform, created and maintained by the National Informatics Centre under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is designed to automate in-house activities and provide member services and networking for resource sharing for government libraries.

Central University of Kerala Awards its First Honorary D.Litt to P.T. Usha

  • Olympian P. T. Usha, the renowned Indian athlete and coach, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the Central University of Kerala (CUK). The ceremony took place at Sabarmati Hall, Periya Campus, where Vice Chancellor Prof. H. Venkateshwarlu conferred the degree upon her, making her the university's first recipient of this prestigious title.
  • Vice Chancellor Prof. H. Venkateshwaralu praised Usha as the pride of the nation and a role model for the youth. He emphasized that it is the university's duty to honor and recognize such distinguished individuals who have inspired and contributed to their respective fields.
  • The event was attended by Deans, Heads of Departments, Teachers, Students, and Staff, among others. The CUK awarded the honorary doctorate to Usha in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Indian sports.
