New tie-breaking Protocol for NEET UG 2024 Focuses on Subject Scores

  • The National Testing Agency (NTA) has shaken up the tie-breaking protocol for the upcoming National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024.
  • Departing from the previous computerised draw of lots method, NTA has now opted or a more intricate approach based on candidates' performance in various subjects.
  • Under the revamped policy, if two or more candidates secure identical marks or percentile scores in NEET UG 2024, their inter-se-merit will be determined through a multi-tiered process.
  • First in line is the evaluation of marks/percentile scores in Biology (Botany and Zoology), followed by Chemistry and Physics.
  • Subsequently, candidates will be assessed based on the proportion of correct and incorrect answers across all subjects, further drilled down to specific subjects like Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Central University of Kerala to Host Conference on Indian Languages

  • The Department of Linguistics under the Central University of Kerala (CUK), hosted the conference on Indian Languages.
  • The event, held in collaboration with the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti under the government of India and Kerala-based organisation, Vidyabhyasa Vikasa Kendram, was inaugurated by North Zone IG, K. Sethuraman, IPS who is also an accomplished writer.
  • There were presentations focused on the utilisation of Indian languages as mediums for higher education. The conference concluded with a panel discussion on the possibilities and challenges of using Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi as mediums of higher education.

IIT Kanpur Hosts 30th Edition of Techkriti Fest

  • Techkriti, the esteemed flagship event of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), hosted its highly anticipated 30th edition from March 14 to March 17, 2024. This momentous celebration of the 30th year offered four days of extravaganza filled with innovation, technology, and entrepreneurial spirit. The theme for this Pearl Jubilee Edition is 'The Cosmic Nexus'.
  • As Asia's largest technical and entrepreneurial festival, Techkriti garnered attention from both national and international spheres and attracted a footfall of over 60,000 from around 1500 prestigious colleges worldwide. The event transformed the IITK campus into a hub of intellectual exchange and creative exploration. 

IIT Gandhinagar to Host Virtual Open House for Data Science e-Masters Degree

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT GN) will be organising a virtual open house for their new Data Science e-Masters degree programme. The inaugural batch of this programme will commence in May 2024.
  • Even while the course will be taught online, the class size has been restricted to 40 to ensure the faculty can pay attention to every single one of the students, the institute clarified.
  • To provide students with the requisite industry-relevant experiences, the programme includes a mandatory yearly two-week residency. During these residencies, students will participate in intensive workshops and seminars, immersing themselves in an active learning environment.

Jamia Millia Islamia Establishes 3 New Departments

  • Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) took a significant step forward with the establishment of three new departments on its campus. The decision, approved by President Droupadi Murmu, marks a milestone in the university's academic expansion.
  • The three newly established departments are set to enrich JMI's academic landscape. These include the Department of Law under the Faculty of Law, the Department of Dental Sciences, and the Department of Medical Sciences under the Faculty of Dentistry.
  • With these additions, JMI aims to further diversify its offerings and cater to the evolving needs of students.

IIT Roorkee Establishes MHI Centre of Excellence & Industry Accelerator on AARTI

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Automotive and Allied Research and Technology Innovations (AARTI).
  • IIT-Roorkee also announced establishment of an Industry Accelerator in collaboration with International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT).
  • IIT Roorkee and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) will synergize their efforts as the PIO and Co-PIO, respectively for these interventions, ensuring a seamless integration of academia and industry for transformative outcomes.
  • This partnership aims to spearhead technological innovations in the automotive and allied research domain, providing a platform for innovators, start-ups and industries alike, and fostering capacity building.

Vehicle that Moves on Land, Air and Water Developed at IIT Jodhpur

  • Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur researchers developed a robust control system and design for a hybrid unmanned aerial-underwater vehicle. Hybrid vehicles that can operate both on land and in water are essential for tasks like mapping oil spills on beaches, rivers, or underwater erosion and pollution dispersion.
  • By developing a sound mathematical system that drives these vehicles, this research will help make them more capable and efficient, and better applicable to their functions such as lifeguard rescue efforts, and even underwater and aerial photography.
  • The team developed this system by taking inspiration from a species of bird, Anhingas that are both able to move on land and underwater. Based on this, the research team has created a 3D-printed prototype made of various components and waterproofing. The prototype has been tested for aerial, water surface, and underwater manoeuvring using Remote Control (RC) transmission.

Senior Bureaucrat Rahul Singh New CBSE Chief

  • Senior bureaucrat Rahul Singh was appointed as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), succeeding Nidhi Chhibber. The appointment is part of a senior-level bureaucratic reshuffle announced by the Centre. Singh is a 1996-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre.
  • Chhibber, the outgoing CBSE chairperson, was appointed as Advisor to the NITI Aayog.

IIT Madras, SmartBridge Jointly Launch 9 Courses on SWAYAM Plus

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) offers a diverse range of courses on SWAYAM Plus, an initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. A total of nine courses were launched by IIT Madras in collaboration with SmartBridge, a Veranda Learning enterprise.
  • As a part of this collaboration, IIT Madras now offers several courses on the platforms including Artificial Intelligence, Applied Data Science, Backend Development (Java Spring Boot), Cyber Security Analyst, Android Application Development (with Kotlin), and Android Application Development (with Flutter).
  • All these courses are aligned with the National Credit Framework (NCRF) level 5 and 5.5, providing students with project-based learning opportunities, and making them credit-eligible.

UGC Issues Mandate for National Minimum Standards and Protocol for Creches

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued guidelines concerning the National Minimum Standards and Protocol for Creches, which are designed to provide a secure and nurturing environment for children while their parents or guardians are at work.
  • These guidelines stem from the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017, which mandates that any establishment with 50 or more employees must provide a creche facility within a specified distance.
  • The benefits of creche facilities are intended to extend to the children of employees across various categories, including temporary, daily wage, consultant, and contractual personnel, aged between 6 months to 6 years.

IIT Delhi, Israel Aerospace Industries Collaborate on Applied Research

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) collaborated with the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for applied research. According to IIT Delhi, the IAI-IIT CSR agreement demonstrates IAI's commitment to its corporate social responsibility in India. The cooperation includes collaborative projects, training and research consultancy.
  • This alliance between IAI and IIT-Delhi, the official statement added, will demonstrate a shared vision leveraging research to drive progress and technological excellence, shaping together the future of technology in India.
