Five-Month Executive Programme in Robotics by IIT Delhi

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) introduced a 5-month executive programme in Robotics. The course which comprises 120 hours of online learning aims to provide professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge required to thrive in the ever-evolving field of robotics. By doing so, it aims to promote innovation and leadership within the industry.
  • The programme covers the fundamentals of robotics, including mechanical components, sensors, and artificial intelligence. The programme will be conducted via the state-of-the-art Interactive Learning (IL) platform and delivered in Direct-to-Device (D2D) mode.

Hindujas Inks New India-UK Healthcare Pact with King's College London

  • The Hinduja Group and King's College London announced a new partnership aimed at improving healthcare outcomes in India and the UK, through training and research capacity building as well as scholarships for Indian students.
  • King's College London, Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, the Hinduja Foundation UK and Mumbai's P.D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre run by the National Health & Education Society are involved in the new strategic partnership to advance two-way training, education and research capacity building.
  • It will lead to the creation of a new Hinduja-King's Health Partners Academy with the aim of driving forward the development of new technologies to address global healthcare challenges.

BHU Approves 14 New Scholarships and a Gold Medal

  • Banaras Hindu University's (BHU) academic council approved the proposal for 14 new merit-cum-means scholarships and one gold medal. The council was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Kumar Jain, along with other members who discussed various issues of academic and research activities in the university and steps to further improve the overall performance and productivity. BHU's council also set up a project monitoring unit to improve the academic and research ecosystem further.
  • The University received many donations to start scholarships under the Pratidana initiative. The council also approved the Akshaibar and Jogeshwari Giri Gold Medals to be presented to a second-year MBA student securing the highest CGPA.

IIT Kanpur Introduces eMasters Degree in Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) introduced a new online postgraduate degree programme 'Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management'. Interested candidates who are seeking to make a career in the construction industry as project managers, construction managers, and sustainability consultants can apply at the official website.
  • Candidates can complete the programme in one to three years duration. Additionally, students do not require a GATE score.
  • Candidates should have completed their four-year bachelor's degree in civil, structural, construction, and allied engineering and architecture disciplines with at least 55 per cent marks with 2 years of work experience (an applicant need not be currently employed to be eligible).

IIT Guwahati Unveils Innovative 3D Printed Dummy Ballot Unit

  • In a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing voter awareness and engagement, the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation Cell (SVEEP) of Kamrup Election District partnered with Indian Insitute of Technoloy-Guwahati and developed a innovative 3D printed dummy ballot unit.
  • Unveiled at IIT Guwahati campus, the dummy ballot unit inauguration saw the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Keerthi Jalli, District Commissioner of Kamrup, Guwahati, Assam.
  • Crafted with the objective of acquainting citizens, particularly new voters, and senior citizens, with the intricacies of voting procedures, the 3D printed dummy ballot unit aims to dispel any apprehensions, anxiety or uncertainties associated with the voting process. By offering a hands-on experience, the dummy ballot unit endeavours to foster maximum voter participation.

IIM Kozhikode, Emeritus Jointly Launch Chief Product Officer Programme

  • The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM Kozhikode) launched the Chief Product Officer programme in India in partnership with Emeritus. The new programme includes two online modules by Kellogg Executive Education.
  • To be eligible for this programme, candidate should possess a graduate certificate (10+2+3) or a diploma (10+2+3) from a recognized university (UGC/AICTE/DEC/AIU/state government/recognised international universities) with a minimum of eight years of work experience.
  • This 12-month long programme's curriculum includes live online sessions by IIM Kozhikode faculty and industry experts, three-day immersion at IIM Kozhikode campus, profound case-studies, a capstone project, hands- on scenario-based business simulations on product strategy and opportunity of peer-to-peer learning. Additionally, the programme incorporates two online modules by Kellogg Executive Education.

Centre Releases Curriculum Framework for Three to Six-year-Olds

  • For the first time ever, the Central government released curriculum advisable to be taught to children aged three to six-years-old, thus giving an impetus to pre-school learning in 14 lakh anganwadis across the country.
  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) released the National Curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education 2024 titled 'Aadharshila,' on the lines of the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework. 
  • Aadharshila (translated as foundation stone) is a detailed 48-week curriculum meant for learning in the age-group of three to six-year-olds in anganwadis.

AMU Gets Its First Woman V-C: Naima Khatoon

  • Naima Khatoon Gulrez, the principal of Aligarh Muslim University's Women's College since 2014, was appointed as the university's first woman Vice-Chancellor. 
  • The AMU Court had shortlisted three candidates for the post and forwarded the names to President Droupadi Murmu for final selection in November 2023.
  • Professor Muzaffar Uruj Rabbani, former Dean, Faculty of Medicine, AMU, and Professor Faizan Mustafa, V-C, Chanakya National Law University, Patna, were the other frontrunners for the post.
  • Gulrez's appointment was cleared by the Election Commission (EC) with the condition that it would not be publicised and no political mileage would be drawn from it.

Students with 4-year Bachelor's Degrees, 75% can Directly Pursue PhD: UGC Chief

  • Students with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly appear for NET and pursue PhD, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar. To pursue a PhD with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the candidates will require a minimum of 75 per cent marks or equivalent grades in their four-year undergraduate course.
  • So far, a candidate for the National Eligibility Test (NET) needed a master's degree with a minimum of 55 percent marks. The exam this year will be conducted in offline mode instead of a Computer-Based Test.

West Bengal: WBCHSE Introduces Semester System in State-run Schools

  • The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) announced the implementation of a semester system for class 11 from the current academic session (2024-25) and for class 12 from the 2025-26 academic session in all state-run and state-aided schools.
  • The new system will encompass the entire higher secondary or 10+2 education into four parts such as semester 1, semester 2, semester 3 and semester 4, where class 11 will be divided into semester 1 and 2 and class 12 will be redesigned as semester 3 and 4 from the academic session 2024-25 and 2025-26, respectively.
  • This change aligns with the new state education policy that was disclosed in August. The policy encourages schools to provide opportunities and guidance to students for engaging in challenging coursework, extracurricular activities, and summer projects with higher educational institutions.

Universities Need Not Take AICTE Approval to Start ODL, Online Courses: UGC

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) notified all central, state and private universities no longer need to take prior approval from the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
  • As per the latest notification, universities do not require prior approval/recommendation/ NOC from AICTE for offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Postgraduate diploma programmes under the disciplines of Management, Computer Application and Travel and Tourism in ODL and/or online mode.
  • However, Deemed to be Universities shall continue to require prior approval/recommendation/ NOC of AICTE for offering of such programmes in ODL and/or online mode, before submitting their application to the Commission.
  • UGC also stated that programmes under the domain of AICTE mentioned in provision 2(z) of UGC (ODL Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, shall remain prohibited, until the receipt of approval/ recommendation/ NOC from AICTE for the consideration of the Commission.
