Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari Appointed Acting Chief Justice of Allahabad HC

  • Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari has been appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
  • The appointment of Justice Bhandari, the senior-most judge of the Allahabad High Court, was necessitated in view of the fact that current Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav was due to retire on June 25.
  • Bhandar served as the Standing Counsel for Railways, Rajasthan Road Transport Corporation, Nuclear Power Corporation, State Election Commission, Rajasthan University, all the Government Electricity Companies of Rajasthan, Jaipur Development Authority, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, Rajasthan Housing Board, Ganga Nagar Sugar Mills Ltd. and Rajasthan Agricultural University.

Upasana Kamineni Named 'Ambassador of Forest Frontline Heroes'

  • WWF India has inducted Upasana Kamineni, Director, Apollo Hospitals, as "Ambassador of Forest Frontline Heroes" with the aim to appreciate the efforts of frontline workers in hospitals and in the wildlife protection space. The focus of this will be on several states across the country covering most eco-regions.

Legendary Carnatic Musician Parassala B. Ponnammal Passes Away

  • Legendary Carnatic musician and Padmashree awardee, Parassala B. Ponnammal, who enthralled classical music lovers for the last eight decades through her incredible concerts, passed away at the age of 96.
  • A doyen of Carnatic music, Ponnammal was a musician who had broken gender stereotypes in classical music and became the first woman student to enroll in the historic Swathi Thirunal College of Music here during the 1940s.
  • Ponnammal also scripted history by becoming the first woman faculty of the Swathi Thirunal College and the first-ever woman principal of the famous RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura.
  • Besides the Padma Shri in 2017, Ponnammal was also a recipient of several notable honours including the Lifetime Achievement Award instituted by Chennai Fine Arts, Sangeetha Prabhakara Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram, Sree Guruvayurappan Chembai Puraskaram and so on.

DPIIT Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra Passes Away

  • Department of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) secretary Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra died. He was 59.
  • A Gujarat cadre 1986-batch IAS officer, he was appointed to the DPIIT in August 2019.
  • Prior to joining DPIIT, Dr Mohapatra had served as the chairman of the Airport Authority of India (AAI). He had earlier been deputed as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Veteran Malayalam Poet-lyricist S Ramesan Nair Passes Away

  • S. Ramesan Nair, a prolific poet-lyricist who wrote songs for over 150 Malayalam films and dozens of devotional albums, passed away at a private hospital in Kochi at the age of 73.
  • Nair was a mainstay of Malayalam songwriting, especially in the 80s and 90s when he delivered hit numbers for composers like MG Radhakrishnan, Johnson, Ouseppachan, Berny Ignatius, Raveendran and Shyam. He made his way into Malayalam cinema in the year 1985 by writing songs for the film 'Pathaamudayam'.

Milkha Singh Passes Away

  • Legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh, popularly known as 'Flying Sikh', passed away in a local hospital in Chandigarh.
  • The legendary athlete was a four-time Asian Games gold medallist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion. His greatest performance remained the fourth-place finish in the 400m final of the 1960 Rome Olympics. He represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was bestowed the Padma Shri in 1959.

Kenneth Kaunda: Zambia's First President Dies

  • Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia's first President and one of the last of the generation of African leaders who fought colonialism, died aged 97.
  • Kaunda was admitted to a military hospital in the capital, Lusaka, suffering from pneumonia.
  • In the 1950s, Kaunda was a key figure in what was then Northern Rhodesia's independence movement from Britain.
  • He became President following independence in 1964.
  • As head of the left-leaning United National Independence Party (UNIP), Kaunda then led the country through decades of one-party rule.
  • He stepped down after losing multi-party elections in 1991.

Montek Ahluwalia Named Member of World Bank-IMF High-Level Advisory Group

  • Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and distinguished fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP), was named as a member of a High-Level Advisory Group (HLAG) formed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the face of the dual crisis posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.
  • The World Bank Group and IMF announced that the aim of the HLAG on sustainable and inclusive recovery and growth is to "help secure a strong recovery and set a path for green, resilient, and inclusive development over the coming decade".
  • The group will be jointly led by Mari Pangestu, Managing Director for Development Policy and Partnerships, World Bank; Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, Director, Strategy, Policy and Review Department, International Monetary Fund; and Lord Nicholas Stern of the London School of Economics.
