Assam to Get its 12th Medical College

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the number of medical colleges in the state will increase to 12 with a new one at Nalbari getting approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start the MBBS course from the academic session, 2023-24.
The Nalbari Medical College will be under Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and have an annual intake of 100 MBBS students.
As per state Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, with the latest approval, the total number of MBBS seats in the state will increase to 1,500.

NTA to Conduct CUET UG in 3 Shifts; Merger with JEE, NEET to be Announced 2 Years in Advance

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will be conducted in three shifts this year instead of two and plans for its merger with crucial entrance exams like JEE and NEET will be announced at least two years in advance, according to the UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar.
As per Kumar, the proposal to merge CUET with the engineering entrance exam JEE and the medical entrance exam NEET is definitely doable. The details are being worked out but whenever the merger happens, an announcement will be made at least two years in advance so the students can prepare accordingly.

BIS Launches 'Learning Science via Standards' Initiative for Students

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, launched 'Learning Science via Standards' series for students.
The initiative focuses on a series of lesson plans aimed to use scientific concepts, principles, and laws to help students understand their practical applications in manufacturing, functioning, and testing of quality characteristics of different products as stated in the relevant Indian Standards.
The subjects for the lesson plans are largely related to products used in day-to-day life and have been chosen based on their relevance to education as part of the course curriculum as well as to industrial applications.
The learning 'Science via Standards' series is in continuum with an earlier BIS initiative under which 'Standards Clubs' are being established in educational institutions across India.

Bar Council of India Assures Delhi High Court of Looking into Request to Make RTE Act Compulsory ...

The Bar Council of India (BCI) apprised the Delhi High Court that it will look into demand of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) to be made a compulsory subject in all law schools across the country for LLB.
The statement was made by the counsel appearing for the BCI before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad.

Surekha Yadav, Asia's First Woman Loco Pilot who Now Operates Vande Bharat

Surekha Yadav, Asia's first woman loco pilot, became the first female to operate the newly-introduced semi-high speed Vande Bharat Express train. She achieved the feat as she piloted the semi-high speed train between Solapur station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai.
Surekha Yadav became India's first female train driver in 1988. Hailing from Satara in the western Maharashtra region, Yadav has won many awards at the state and national levels so far for her achievements.

Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin New Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia

Members of the court (Anjuman) of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) elected D.r Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin as the chancellor (Amir-e-Jamia) of the university. Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin will hold the post for a period of five years.
Dr. Saifuddin succeeded Dr. Najma Heptulla whose term was completed last year (2022).
Dr. Saifuddin has been honoured with a number of awards and accolades including featuring in the 500 Most Influential Muslims list. A citation was read in the US House of Representatives for his contributions. He has been received as a reverent state guest in several countries.

IIT Roorkee Researchers Discover New Antibacterial Molecule 'IITR00693'

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee discovered a new antibacterial small molecule (IITR00693) that could help in the fight against drug-resistant infections.
The research was led by Prof Ranjana Pathania, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Mahak Saini, and Amit Gaurav of the same institute; Ashish Kothari and Balram ji Omar of AIIMS, Rishikesh; Varsha Gupta of Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh and Amitabha Bhattacharjee from Assam University.
The molecule, discovered after a rigorous screening process, has shown potent antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some of the most problematic drug-resistant strains.

Bihar has Lowest Literacy Rate Followed by Arunachal, Rajasthan

According to the Ministry of Education, Bihar has the lowest literacy rate in the country followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The literacy rate in rural India is 67.77 per cent as compared to 84.11 per cent in urban India.
The information was shared by Union Minister of State for Education, Annapurna Devi in response to a written question in Lok Sabha.
According to the data shared by the Ministry of Education, Bihar (61.8 pc) has the lowest literacy, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (65.3 pc) and Rajasthan (66.1 pc).
Kerala has the highest literacy rate (94 pc) followed by Lakshadweep (91.85) and Mizoram (91.33 pc).

Misra Centre for Financial Markets and Economy (MCFME) at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), along with the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL) organised the 'International Research Conference on FinTech: Innovation, Inclusion, and Regulation' on campus.
The two-day conference was organised with the objective of bringing top researchers, practitioners, and regulators from across the globe together to deliberate on key issues that accompany the exponential growth that FinTech has seen in the past few years.
IIMA-CAFRAL FinTech conference came at an opportune time during India's Presidency of the G20. The G20 Finance Track emphasizes improving financial inclusion through harnessing emerging technologies, improving the financial architecture, digital financial literacy, and bridging the digital divide.

IIT Kanpur Licenses Gene Therapy Technology to Reliance Life Sciences

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur licensed a gene therapy technology that has the potential to treat many hereditary eye diseases to Reliance Life Sciences Pvt Ltd. The gene therapy technology from IIT Kanpur will be further developed as an indigenous product by Reliance Life Sciences.
Developed by Jayandharan Giridhara Rao and Shubham Maurya from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), IIT Kanpur, the patented technology modifies the gene of an organism to treat a hereditary disorder.
Reliance Life Sciences is developing several gene therapies to address unmet clinical needs. Besides, the company is also developing a range of human and animal health vaccines and mRNA products.

BITS Pilani Launches BITS Law School in Mumbai

BITS Pilani launched BITS Law School in Greater Mumbai. The law school would offer two five-year integrated degree programmes, BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons). The first academic year will commence on August 1, 2023.
The law students will also gain access to and benefit from the over 1,70,000 BITS Pilani Alumni Network spanning across 55 countries. BITS Law School will seek intellectual guidance from luminaries of the legal fraternity, higher education, business, and policymaking.
As per reports, scholarships will be offered for meritorious students to enable access and preserve diversity. Among the specialisations offered are technology and media law; entertainment and sports law; corporate and financial law; and alternate dispute resolution and mediation.

University of Melbourne, 3 Indian Varsities Launches Joint BSc Dual Degree Course

The University of Melbourne will offer a new Bachelor of Science Dual Degree to Indian students. The dual degree will be offered in partnership with the University of Madras, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (Hyderabad).
Indian students who enrol in the new dual will complete their degree both in India and Australia. They will be spending the first two years of their course in India and the remaining two years at the campus in Melbourne.
After completing the degree, they will be awarded a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne.

IIT Kanpur to Launch New eMasters Program on Sustainable Construction

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will launch India's first-ever online post-graduate level programme on Construction Engineering.
The programme is a new addition to the unique eMasters degree programme being run by the institute and is focused on 'Sustainable Construction Practices and Project Management'.
The programme is designed to cater to the needs of the rapidly growing infrastructure and construction sectors in India.
This programme aims to equip practising civil engineers and architects with the knowledge and skills to manage projects effectively, using minimum resources and energy requirements, and with a minimum carbon footprint.
