IISc Bangalore Top Indian Institute in THE's Asia University Rankings 2023
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, emerged as India's highest-ranked university in the Times Higher Education's (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023. In the full rankings, which were released for Asian universities, it stood at 48th place.
It was the only Indian university in the top 50.
In India, IISc was followed by JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Bengaluru, which ranked 68th in Asia. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Solan, ranked 77th in Asia and third in the country.
India had four universities in the top 100 and 18 universities in the top 200. Kottayam's Mahatma Gandhi University was the only other Indian university in the top 100. It stood at the 95th spot.
In the full list, China's Tsinghua University retained the top spot for the fourth year in a row. In second place was another Chinese university, Peking University, which also retained the spot for the fourth year in a row.
The third place went to the National University of Singapore, which also maintained its position for the fourth consecutive year.
The other two universities in the top five rankings were the University of Hong Kong and Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.
The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) announced the commencement of various short-term, skill-based courses. These courses are available in both online and offline modes and also provide placement assistance.
The courses are open to a wide range of individuals, including working professionals, entrepreneurs, university students, job seekers, and even school dropouts.

IIT Roorkee Develops Water-soluble Coating to Replace Plastic in Disposable Paper
A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, IIT Roorkee, developed a coating for disposable paper that is water soluble and will be used in various applications with requirements of food freshness retention and replaces plastic coatings commonly used in food-grade packaging papers and paperboards.
The innovative coating formulation aims to eliminate the use of plastic in disposable paper and paperboard products, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable society. By enabling the recycling of disposable products, this technology has a significant positive impact on the environment, improving waste material collection and reducing the burden on landfill sites.
North India's First Skin Bank Inaugurated at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital
North India's first Skin Bank was inaugurated at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital. It is a bank where deceased donors can donate their skin which will be helpful in treating burns. The skin can be donated within six hours of death and utilised for burns and trauma patients after processing.
As per Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the facility will be a boon for patients and help in providing a better quality of life for people suffering from severe burns and injuries. The Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. B. L. Sherwal described it as a significant achievement adding that the hospital is also planning to open a separate website for the skin bank so that people can avail of this facility easily.

India's First mRNA-based Omicron-specific Booster Vaccine Gets Approval
Pune-based Gennova Biopharmaceuticals' mRNA COVID-19 booster vaccine, GemCOVAC-OM, against the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV2 received emergency use authorisation from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).
The launch is expected within two to three weeks in New Delhi where details on the cost and anticipated demand will be announced. At present, 12 lakh booster doses of GemCOVAC-OM are available at the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Kasauli, which has the mandate of national regulations of vaccines produced indigenously for the domestic market.

IIM-Calcutta Collaborates with WBCHSE to Offer Leadership Training to School Teachers
IIM Calcutta collaborated with the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education to give leadership development training to head teachers of state government-run and-aided schools.
The first edition of the programme was organised in 2021-22, and it provided training to 985 head teachers across West Bengal.
In the second edition this year (2023), the aim is to impart leadership development training for over 2,000 head teachers.
IIM-Calcutta Launches Executive Programme in Public Policy and Management
The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta) tied up with ed-tech platform Emeritus and rolled out Executive Programme in Public Policy and Management. The 12-month programme is designed for a range of professionals from governments, NGOs and academia, to corporate and public affairs to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary public policy and implement transformative policies.
IIM-Calcutta claims that the curriculum is one-of-its-kind that combines public policy management, strategy and innovation along with contemporary agendas.
The programme is designed by leading faculty at IIM Calcutta and will take place via live online sessions as well as in-campus sessions.

The central government launched a new collection of courses called 'Dakshta' (Development of Attitude, Knowledge, Skill for Holistic Transformation in Administration) on the iGOT Karmayogi Platform.
The 'Dakshta' course collection consists of 18 courses tailored specifically for young professionals and consultants engaged in government services.
