IIT Guwahati Signs MoU with the Indian Council of World Affairs

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) to build capacity/skills in international affairs and foreign policy.
The MoU was signed between Professor Parameswar Krishnan Iyer, Officiating Director, IIT Guwahati, and Ambassador Vijay Thakur Singh, Director-General, ICWA, with the objective of working together in pursuit of their goal of expanding awareness and knowledge on international affairs and Indian foreign policy. The agreement is valid for a period of 3 years.

London Retains Its Number 1 Position in QS World's Best Cities for Students

The latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Rankings for Best Student Cities 2024 released on July 19.
London retains its top spot as the world's best student city for the fifth consecutive time. Tokyo grabbed the second place, followed by Seoul in third. Melbourne was fourth, while Munich fifth.
One area of concern for all Indian cities which remained was the Desirability indicator, where none have made it to the top 100 globally. The Desirability indicator considers metrics related to quality of life, pollution index, safety, and the propensity of prospective students to select a city for their university experience, as per QS ranking.

Five Indian Students in Top 50 of Global Students Prize 2023

The top 50 shortlisted candidates for Chegg.org Global Student Prize 2023 were announced and it included five students from India. These students were selected from 3,851 applications across 122 countries.
The annual award goes to one exceptional student who makes an impact on learning, the lives of their peers and on society beyond. The award prize is $100,000.
The five students from India are Namya Joshi, a Class 11 student from Sat Paul Mittal School, Ludhiana, Punjab; Vinisha Umashankar, a Class 12 student from SKP Vanitha International School, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu; Gladson Vaghela, a medical student at Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society Medical College, Gandhinagar, Gujarat; Ravindra Bishnoi, an information technology student at Chandigarh Engineering College and Padmaksh Khandelwal, a computer science student at Sir Padampat Singhania School, Kota, Rajasthan.

QS Best Student Cities: No Indian City in Top Global 100

Mumbai was ranked best Indian city for students by QS Best Student Cities 2024 ranking, however, its global ranking was 118. Mumbai was followed by Delhi, which received a global rank of 132, Bangalore 147 and Chennai between 151 to 160.
None of the major Indian cities made it to the top 100 global list and all saw a fall in their ranking compared to the previous year.
QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education experts, released its 11th edition of QS Best Student Cities, which compared 160 premier educational destinations, including 26 new entries.
Cities must have a minimum population of 250,000 and at least two universities in the QS World University rankings to be listed in the QS city ranks. The rankings takes into account 100,000 survey responses from students, taking into account their feedback, opinion and desirability and student voice indicators of a listed city.

Professor Faizan Mustafa New Vice Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University

Professor Faizan Mustafa of the law faculty at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was appointed vice chancellor of the Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) in Patna.
The appointment was made on the recommendation of the search committee headed by former Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
Professor Mustafa returned to AMU in 2022 after spending a decade at the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) as its vice-chancellor. He was previously the founder vice chancellor of National Law University, Odisha.
Mustafa is the recipient of both Commonwealth Scholarship as well as Fulbright Fellowship. He was conferred the SAARC's 'Best Law Teacher Award' in 2014 and has delivered lectures in almost 32 countries of the world like USA, UK, Australia, Germany, China, Germany, Israel, etc.

Delhi Teachers' University Signs MoU with US-based Non-profit Think Tank

Delhi government-run Delhi Teachers' University (DTU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a US-based non-profit public policy think tank for enhancing the professional development of educators. The MoU is for three years.
The Delhi government aims to empower teachers with the latest research insights and equip them with the necessary skills.
The collaboration between Delhi Teachers University and the RAND Corporation aims to facilitate support for strategic issues, improve teaching and research skills, and engage in joint scholarly discourse on key public policy matters.
RAND Corporation is recognised as one of the top three education think tanks globally.
The umbrella MoU marks a first-of-its-kind collaboration that aims to leverage DTU's infrastructure along with RAND's expertise in conducting rigorous, high-quality research to support teacher training and capacity building for teachers and undertake future research activities to understand the state of teachers and the teaching profession in Delhi.

MCD School on T4's Education's Shortlist for 'World's Best School for Community Collaboration'

The Nagar Nigam Pratibha Baalika Vidyalaya in North-east Delhi's Dilshad Colony, run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), made it to UK-based T4 Education's top 10 shortlist on the 'World's Best Schools in Community Collaboration'.
The news was announced by the organisation, which puts out a list every year on schools that have made a difference.
The school, which was established in 1965, started a community engagement programme in April 2020, one month into the national lockdown imposed on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Called the Family Champion Programme, the initiative aimed at ensuring that students stayed connected with the school, even as physical and in-person education took a hit during the pandemic.
The school worked with an NGO named Kshamtalaya Foundation for the same, which reached out to the students and their families through a door-to-door campaign. The aim: equipping family members to help and guide their children with classes by briefing them about the challenges of virtual education.

Om Birla Releases IGNOU Prospectus in Braille Script

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) released the IGNOU Prospectus in Braille script. The prospectus was launched by Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The prospectus in Braille equips individuals, well-versed in reading Braille script, with information about the institute regarding programmes, admission process, IGNOU's objectives and more.
The Speaker inaugurated an exhibition showcasing innovative start-up products and solutions developed by IGNOU students. He engaged with IGNOU learners through the teleconferencing facility at the Electronic Media Production Centre. The learners shared their learning experiences, emphasising the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) intervention in their educational journey.

Indian students Win 5 Medals at International Physics Olympiad

Students from India bagged three gold and two silver medals at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), 2023, which was held in Tokyo, Japan from July 10 to 17, 2023.
The Indian team is comprised of five boys, who all achieved either gold or silver medal. Aditya from Pitampura, (Delhi), Dhruv Shah from Pune and Mehul Borad from Kachiguda (Telangana) bagged gold medals each. Raghav Goyal from Chandigarh and Rhythm Kedia from Raipur (Chhattisgarh) earned silver medals each.
This year's (2023) Indian team was led by two leaders from India — Prof. Arun V. Kulkarni (Professor, BITS Pilani, Goa), Dr. Shirish Pathare (HBCSE, TIFR). There were also two Scientific Observers — Prof. Anwesh Mazumdar (HBCSE, Mumbai), Dr. Leena Joshi (St Xaviers' College, Mumbai).

IIT Roorkee's Research Awards

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee announced the names of professors who won the Research Awards. The institute annually presents Research Awards to honour the work of researchers in their respective fields.
The IIT Roorkee Research Awards 2022 were accessible to all citizens of India and have been offered ever since the institution's founding. In 1847, it was founded as College Civil Engineering, Roorkee. In 1949, it was established as a university, and in 2001, it became an IIT.
The Khosla National Award (Sciences) was given to Kanishka Biswas, a professor in the brand-new chemistry department at Bangalore's Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.
Professor R. P. Saini of IIT Roorkee's department of hydro and renewable energy received the HRED Hydro and Renewable Energy Award from the institute.
D. P. Kanungo was declared the AS Arya Disaster Prevention Award winner. Professor Kanungo is the Chief Scientist & Group Leader of the Geo-Hazard Risk Reduction Group of CSIR-CBRI, Roorkee.
Deepankar Choudhury, Professor IIT Bombay, won the Gopal Ranjan Technology Award. He is the only Geotechnical Engineer in the country who is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), the oldest Science Academy of India.
Satish Chandra was awarded the SR Mehra Memorial Award. He is a Professor in Civil Engineering Department at IIT Roorkee.

Dharmendra Pradhan and Lawrence Wong Felicitate Winners of the Third Edition of Singapore-India H...

Union Minister of Education and Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan and Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong felicitated the winners of the third edition of Singapore-India Hackathon in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The hacathon was jointly organised by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) of Ministry of Education, India and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore).
The top student prize was conferred to students of Nanyang Technological University, Amity University, and Dwarkadas College of Engineering who developed a tool to help regulators detect potential suspects of insider trading.
The top winner in the start-up category, Haqdarshak won for enabling 2.8 million Indians to unlock close to SGD 700 million in government welfare services. Held under the G20 Presidency in IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat, the hackathon's finale brought together the best start-ups and students from India and Singapore. It was attended by over 600 students, start-ups, investors, policymakers, corporates, and academics.
This year's (2023) Singapore-India Hackathon, apart from academic institutions like NTU Singapore and IIT Gandhinagar, brought together leading corporates and the public sector from both nations to mentor the aspiring entrepreneurs.
