26 JMI Researchers Feature in Stanford University's List of Top 2% Scientists Worldwide

  • A total of 26 of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) researchers featured in the list of the top two per cent scientists worldwide by Stanford University.
  • There are two lists which were released — one based on career-long data and another focusing on the performance of researchers in the year 2022. A total of seven professors were named in both lists — Ali, Imran Ahsan, Haseeb Ghosh, Sushant G. Rahman, Atiqur Ahmad, Sharif Ahmad, Tokeer Islam, Tarikul.
  • Eight professors were named in the 'career' list — Ali, Imran Ahsan, Haseeb Ghosh, Sushant G. Rahman, Atiqur Sen, Anjan A. Ahmad, Sharif Ahmad, Tokeer Islam, Tarikul.

IIT Madras Hosts Water Security and Climate Adaptation Conference

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) hosted a Water Security and Climate Adaptation (WSCA) conference from October 4 to 7, 2023 with a focus on Adaptation and Mitigation through Sustainable Development.
  • The conference was coordinated by the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre (ABCD Centre) in the Institute. The focus was on highlighting the importance of sustainability in water-related problems and emphasising its need to scientists, engineers, policymakers, and industries.
  • The overarching objective of this conference was to exchange knowledge and practical know-how on the relationship between water security and adaptation to climate change with best practice implementation.

IP University to Give 'One-time Chance' to Students Who Couldn't Complete Degrees

  • As part of its silver jubilee celebrations, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University decided to offer a 'one-time chance' to the students who couldn't complete their degrees over the past 25 years.
  • This initiative demonstrates the university's commitment to supporting educational pursuits and providing opportunities for academic achievement.

Two IIM-Bangalore Courses Rank among Global top 50: QS Global MBA, MiM Rankings 2024

  • Two MBA programmes offered by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore were ranked in the global top 50 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
  • The one-year Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), which offered to working professionals, moved up three places from last year (2022) and ranked 47th rank with an overall score of 68. The programme scored well on the parameter of return on investment (94.7). IIM Bangalore performed amongst the top 14.8 per cent globally out of 318 programmes ranked by QS, this year (2023).
  • The two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) also featured in the top 50 in the QS MiM (Master's in Management) Rankings. The programme moved up five places from last year (2022). It obtained the 32nd rank with an overall score of 69.4. A total of 203 programmes were evaluated and IIM Bangalore performed amongst the top 15.8 per cent globally.
  • In QS MiM rankings, the core metrics are alumni outcomes, class and faculty diversity, employability, thought leadership and value for money.

Education Ministry Increases Stipends for PhD Students and Scholars

  • The Education Ministry announced an increase in stipends for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), and Research Associates. This came as a major relief to PhD students and scholars across the country.
  • Under the revised fellowship stipend schedule, the JRF stipend was increased to Rs. 37,000 from Rs. 31,000. Similarly, the SRF stipend was raised to Rs. 42,000 from Rs. 35,000. Research Associates will also benefit from this adjustment, with Research Associate-I set to receive Rs. 58,000, Research Associate-II Rs. 61,000, and Research Associate-III Rs. 67,000. This revised fellowship framework will necessitate an additional expenditure of approximately Rs. 725 crore from the government.

PM Modi Inaugurates IIT Jodhpur Campus

  • Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur campus. The IIT Jodhpur campus is spread over 852 acres of land and is a future-driven institute with 10 departments, three schools, five centres and six interdisciplinary programmes.
  • IIT Jodhpur provides high quality inclusive holistic education to more than 4500 students and supports cutting-edge research and deep-tech innovation initiatives which will boost the economy. IIT Jodhpur was established in 2008 with seven other IITs. The institute is situated on Jodhpur-Nagaur Highway.

UP Govt. Brings AI and Coding to Madrassa Curriculum

  • The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government decided to introduce artificial intelligence and coding to madrassa students. This initiative has been planned and taken forward by the Yogi government to equip madrassa students with a robust digital education and bring them in line with other education boards.
  • The UP government's announcement is a major step towards the integration of digital literacy, coding, and artificial intelligence into the curriculum of madrassa education in the state.
  • In addition to the necessary resources required for the programme, the government also pledged support for the training of madrassa teachers for effective teaching of these subjects.
  • As part of this digital literacy initiative, an orientation module on artificial intelligence was launched in Lucknow. The training programme will include both school and madrassa teachers.

New UGC Teacher Training Scheme Named after BHU Founder has Indian Cultural Themes

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced a new teaching initiative, named the 'Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme' (MMTTP), in honour of the founder of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya.
  • The UGC detailed the MMTTP through a brochure which introduces eight different themes for teacher training.
  • Under the umbrella theme of 'Holistic Education', these subjects discuss various aspects of Indian cultural and intellectual traditions.

IIT-Guwahati, AlmaBetter to Offer Data Science, AI, Web Development Certification Courses

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati's E&ICT Academy collaborated with AlmaBetter to offer certification programmes in data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and web development.
  • The learners, as part of the new certification programmes, will be able to acquire an advanced certification in full stack data science and artificial intelligence (AI) and full stack web development.
  • IIT Guwahati's E&ICT Academies are a joint initiative by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT and NITs.
  • With this partnership, E&ICT Academy, IIT Guwahati, and AlmaBetter seek to train learners and improve their employability in data science, software engineering and other specialised fields.

Indian Army Begins Scholarship for Underprivileged Students in Jammu and Kashmir

  • The Indian Army introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Special Scholarship Scheme 2023, aiming to offer educational opportunities to underprivileged students.
  • Under the Army's 'Sadbhavana' initiative, a newly launched scholarship programme will sponsor the education of 146 students from various districts in the valley. Each student will receive financial support of Rs. 1.2 lakh.
  • The balance of expenditure in respect of these students will be borne by the respective universities. There are 12 affiliated universities in which these students will be pursuing their Higher Education.
  • This programme has a goal to bridge the gap between privileged and underprivileged students by offering scholarships and financial aid to those who exhibit exceptional potential and dedication in the field of education.
