Lockheed Martin Gets $328 mn Contract from IAF

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has awarded US aerospace giant Lockheed Martin a $328.8 million, five-year contract to provide comprehensive maintenance support for India's fleet of 12 C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlifter aircraft.
  • Lockheed Martin manufactures the highly regarded Super Hercules transport aircraft, which is flown by 26 operators in 22 nations.
  • The arrangement announced is called a "Follow On Support-II" (FOS-II) contract.

Indian Army Replaces World War Era Grenades

  • The Indian Army received the first batch of the Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG) in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Nagpur. The Ministry of Defence said that MMHG will replace 'Grenade No 36' of the World War I vintage design, which had been continuing in service to date.
  • The Multi-Mode Hand Grenades have been manufactured by Economic Explosives Limited (EEL).
  • The EEL had signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence in October 2020, to supply 10 lakh modern hand grenades for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The deliveries would be spread over two years from the bulk production clearance, which was accorded to EEL in March 2021.

Navies of India and Philippines Conduct Military Drills

  • India carried out a naval exercise with the Philippines in the South China Sea, five days after it conducted a similar drill with Vietnam in the region that has been witnessing growing Chinese military expansionism.
  • While the Indian Navy deployed its guided missile destroyer INS Ranvijay and guided missile corvette INS Kora in the exercise, the Philippine Navy was represented by its frigate BRP Antonio Luna.
  • The Philippines government refers to the eastern parts of the South China Sea as the West Philippine Sea.
 

Combat-support Arms Get Women Colonels

  • For the first time, the Indian Army has allowed Colonel-level rank for women officers in support arms of the force.
  • This is the first time that women officers serving with the Corps of Signals, Corps of Electronic and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and the Corps of Engineers have been approved to the rank of Colonel.
  • A selection board of the Indian Army cleared the way for the promotion of five women officers to Colonel (Time Scale) rank, post completion of 26 years of service.
  • The five women officers selected for Colonel (Time Scale) rank are Lt Col Sangeeta Sardana from the Corps of Signals, Lt Col Sonia Anand and Lt Col Navneet Duggal from the Corps of EME and Lt Col Reenu Khanna and Lt Col Ritcha Sagar from the Corps of Engineers.
  • Previously, promotion to the rank of Colonel was only applicable for women officers in the Army Medical Corps, Judge Advocate General and the Army Education Corps.

India and Qatar Conduct Joint Naval Exercise in Persian Gulf

  • The second edition of the joint naval exercise, Zair-Al-Bahr, between the Indian Navy and Qatar Emiri Naval Force (QENF) was conducted in the Persian Gulf.
  • This edition of the exercise included a three-day harbour phase followed by a two-day sea phase. The sea phase comprised of tactical maritime exercises involving surface action, anti-piracy exercises, air defence, maritime surveillance, boarding operations and SAR exercises.
  • In the sea phase of the exercise, the Indian Navy's Stealth Frigate INS Trikand, QENF's missile boats of Barzan and Damsah class, fast-attack crafts of MRTP 34 class and Rafale fighter aircraft participated.

Kalashnikov to Showcase Its New Guided-missile S-8L

  • After the completion of the initial research and development of the advanced S-8L guided missile, Russia`s Kalashnikov Group is set to present the new product at the International Military-Technical Forum "ARMY-2021".
  • The S-8L guided missile with semi-active homing head can be used by various carriers, including all types of helicopters or aircraft, as well as UAVs.
  • The advanced 80-mm S-8L guided missile with HEF warhead is designed to engage single and group ground targets, both stationary and moving. The S-8L is launched from the helicopters and aircrafts using the B8V20 or B8M1 rocket launchers.

Turkey Expands Cooperation with Pakistan on Long-endurance Drone

  • Turkey's main aerospace manufacturer signed an agreement with a Pakistani institution to produce components for a long-endurance drone developed by Ankara.
  • The Anka is considered as a 'medium-altitude, long-endurance' drone, which can stay airborne for up to 24 hours or longer and can carry out surveillance and attack missions. The Anka is capable of carrying up to 200 kg of sensors or weapons like lightweight air-to-surface missiles.
  • Turkish Aerospace (TUSAS) signed the agreement with Pakistan's National Engineering and Science Commission (NESCOM) on the sidelines of the recent International Defense Industry Fair, held in Istanbul.

General Dynamics Builds Lightweight Vehicle Electronic Warfare System for US Army

  • The U.S. Army awarded General Dynamics a contract to prototype an electronic warfare system on the new Infantry Squad Vehicle.
  • The system, which General Dynamics calls the Multi-Domain Operations Weapon System and the Army calls the Tactical Electronic Warfare System-Infantry Brigade Combat Team, or TEWS-IBCT, is the next evolution of a capability General Dynamics has provided the Army in the past.

India Seals Deal with Russia to Procure AK-103 Rifles

  • As per reports, India has finalised a deal with Russia to buy a sizeable number of AK-103 series of assault rifles for the Indian Army under the provisions of emergency procurement.
  • The Army is implementing a mega infantry modernisation programme under which a large number of light machine guns, battle carbines and assault rifles are being purchased to replace its ageing and obsolete weapons.

DRDO Develops Advanced Chaff Technology to safeguard IAF Fighter Aircrafts

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed an advanced chaff technology to safeguard Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets against hostile radar threats.
  • The technology has been developed by DRDO's defence laboratory in Rajasthan's Jodhpur in collaboration with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune.
  • Chaff is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircraft from hostile radar threats. A very small quantity of chaff material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy missiles and ensures the safety of the fighter aircraft.
