India Ranked 6th as Nuclear Weapons Increased Since 2019; US Tops: SIPRI

  • In accordance with the "SIPRI Yearbook 2020-Armaments, Disarmament and International Security" of Swedish think tank, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), from 2019 there is an increase in the nuclear weapons stockpile of India and China.
  • However India's overall possession of nuclear weapons is less than half of Beijing's and also slightly lower than what Pakistan possesses.
  • The number of nuclear warheads in the Indian arsenal pegged at 150 in comparison to the 2019 report (on the basis of 2018) when India had 130-140.
  • On the other hand, China's nuclear arsenal calculated at 320 as compared to 290 of SIPRI's 2019 report while Pakistan's nuclear arsenal remained constant at 160 in comparison to 2019's 150-160.

Nepal to Add 100 Border Outposts

  • Nepal plans to increase the number of its border outposts (BoPs) along the boundary with India by 100, from the existing 121 to 221 in the next year, in a move that comes at a time when friction between the two countries is high over a new map approved by the Himalayan country's parliament that lays claim to territory that has always been with India.
  • The idea is to eventually take this number up to 500.
  • The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards India's borders with Nepal, and India's central intelligence agencies have information that Nepal's Armed Police Force (APF), deployed at the border, has already been given approval for an additional 100 border posts by that country's home ministry. A proposal for taking this number to 500 is under consideration.

China and Pakistan Have more Nukes than India

  • According to a new yearbook released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China and Pakistan possess more nuclear weapons than India.
  • The think tank's Yearbook 2020 pegs the number of nuclear warheads in the Chinese arsenal at 320, while the nuclear forces of Pakistan and India are estimated to have 160 and 150 weapons, respectively. The figures have been updated till January 2020.
  • India and its neighbours were ranked in the same order by SIPRI last year too when China possessed 290 nuclear warheads, Pakistan 150-160 and India, 130-140 warheads at the start of 2019.
  • The findings come at a time when India and China are caught in a border confrontation along the contested line of actual control in eastern Ladakh.
  • China is carrying out "significant modernisation" of its nuclear arsenal and developing a "so-called nuclear triad for the first time" made up of new land and sea-based missiles and nuclear-capable fighter jets, SIPRI said in a statement announcing the launch of the yearbook.

Indian Military Tests Eye-tracking Tech to Help Pilots Control Planes

  • Pilots in India are testing aircraft display systems that work by tracking and responding to eye movements and could let military pilots keep their hands on the plane's controls more often while flying.
  • Modern aircraft have electronic display systems that show information such as the plane's fuel level, imaging system or geographical position. Pilots can click the screen to the relevant page of information as needed, but this requires taking one hand either off the plane's throttle or control stick.
  • Through unique eye- and face-tracking sensor technologies, with a key focus on alertness and attention, Seeing Machines technology enables key data and metrics to understand and improve human performance. This technology is unique. It is a non-wearable, unobtrusive system that can be adapted and integrated into various real-world environments to provide new data to optimise training and operational monitoring.
  • This technology will challenge the 'current way' and provide a new perspective, with data that focuses on the human element, their alertness and performance.

Three US Carriers in Indo-Pacific

  • For the first time in nearly three years, three American aircraft carriers are patrolling the Indo-Pacific waters, a massive show of naval force in a region roiled by spiking tensions between the US and China and a sign that the Navy has bounced.
  • The unusual simultaneous appearance of the three warships, accompanied by Navy cruisers, destroyers, fighter jets and other aircraft, comes as the US escalates criticism of Beijing's response to the coronavirus outbreak, its moves to impose greater control over Hong Kong and its campaign to militarise human-made islands in the South China Sea.
