French Firm EDF Looks to Set up 'Centre of Excellence' in Civil Nuclear Space in Maharashtra

  • France-based EDF Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with I2EN and city-based educational institute VJTI to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the establishment of a centre of excellence in the civil nuclear sector in Maharashtra. The I2EN is an umbrella organisation that brings together French stakeholders involved in nuclear education and training.
  • EDF, which is engaged in the development and construction of the biggest nuclear plant in the world, with six EPR (European Pressurised Reactor) reactors totalling close to 10,000 MW at Jaitapur, along with state-run NPCIL, is aiming to develop a large pool of diversified skills in India to support the project.

India and Russia to Launch New Brahmos Missile Capable of Downing Aircraft With AWACS System by 2024

  • The new missile will be used for destroying major aerial targets, while the previous versions were only capable of destroying targets on the ground or at sea.
  • Russia and India have adopted a plan for their joint BrahMos project, meant to create a new cruise missile capable of downing aircraft equipped with AWACS systems (an advanced airborne early warning and control).
  • According to the Russian director of the venture, Alexander Maksichev, the missile will be ready for launch by 2024. He noted that it will have different target-seeking equipment but will use the same platform.
  • The BrahMos venture was established by Moscow and New Delhi in 1998 and develops hypersonic missiles —naval-, underwater-, shore-, and air-based. It has recently faced a major surge in demand, with an additional $1 billion increase in orders in six months since the beginning of the year despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Indian Army to Get 'Bhabha Kavach'

  • At a time when India has started facing some tough challenges along the Line of Actual Control with China, an exclusive armour unit to manufacture bullet-proof jackets of international standards and protective gear and to supply bullet-proof vehicles will come up at Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (Midhani) in Hyderabad's Kanchanbagh area.
  • The bullet-proof jackets are named 'Bhabha kavach' since the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) had developed the technology. These jackets can evenstop a bullet fired from an AK-47 as well. A few hundred bulletproof jackets have already been supplied to the paramilitary forces as samples.

RAF Intercepts Russian Aircraft off Scottish Coast

  • UK fighter jets have intercepted two Russian aircraft off the Scottish coast.
  • The Ministry of Defence said the RAF Typhoons were scrambled after the Russian aircraft "entered the UK's controlled zone of international airspace".
  • The Russian planes were identified as TU-142 Bear F maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
  • The RAF aircraft are currently operating from Leuchars in Fife.

Govt Puts National Security Clause in Defence FDI Hike to 74 per cent

  • The new policy raising the cap of foreign direct investment through automatic approval in the defence sector from 49 per cent to 74 per cent now has a 'National Security' clause as a condition. The policy was approved by the Union Cabinet. The new condition has been proposed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • "Foreign investment in the Defence Sector shall be subject to scrutiny on ground of National Security and the Government reserves the right to review any foreign investment in the Defence Sector that may affect national security," says the new condition.

Rafale Induction a Game Changer, Says Rajnath Singh

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the induction of the French Rafale fighter jet into the Indian Air Force (IAF) a "game changer" and termed it a very important step in the light of the prevailing security conditions that "have been created along India's borders."
  • This formal ceremony also marks their full operational induction into the IAF, said Air Chief Marshal (ACM) RKS Bhadauria. 
  • India's responsibilities were not limited to land borders alone. In the Indo-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region, it was working with international community as a commitment to world peace.
