UAE Firm Selected for Carbines in Talks with Indian Defence Majors to Set Up Plant

  • The UAE government-owned entity that has been selected for a contract to supply close quarter battle carbines on a fast track basis to the army says that is in talks with major Indian defence players to set up manufacturing facilities from which it can source up to 60% of the components needed.
  • Caracal International, which was selected to supply 93, 895 new generation carbines, did not disclose the names of its Indian partners but said that it is willing to transfer technology and move production here.
  • As reported, the fast track carbine procurement plan is at a tricky juncture – at a special meeting held last month, chaired by the defence secretary, it was decided that plans in the works since 2018 to import a limited number of close quarter battle carbines to meet immediate requirements are to be shelved in favour of a Make in India plan.

Navy to Hold Passage Exercise with U.S. Carrier

  • Continuing the series of its maritime engagements, the Navy held another Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier group. 
  • Navy ships held a PASSEX with USS Ronald Reagan on October 12 as it transits through the Indian Ocean.
  • The PASSEX is likely to be held in the waters off Kochi. On September 25, for the first time a U.S. Navy P-8A long range maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) landed at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, for refuelling under the bilateral logistics support agreement.

Nirbhay Cruise Missile to be Tested with Indigenous STFE Propulsion System

  • The first developmental trial of a Nirbhay cruise missile fitted with an indigenous Small Turbo Fan Engine (STFE) propulsion system developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) is expected, to take place this month.
  • Nirbhay cruise missiles presently are powered by Russian-made NPO Saturn 36MT mini turbofan engines and DRDO plans to validate the STFE propulsion system in the upcoming test so that it enters full-scale production from 2021. 
  • Indigenous 110 kg Small Turbo Fan Engine (STFE) has undergone 90 minutes of continuous operation at max power setting at Bangalore and was also tested at Leh at -15 degree Celsius.
  • Nirbhay Cruise Missile has been inducted, in limited numbers due to heighten border tensions with the Chinese Army in Ladhak Standoff but, the numbers are limited and are mostly pre-production models. 

North Korea Unveils 'Monster' New Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

  • North Korea unveiled previously unseen intercontinental ballistic missiles at an unprecedented predawn military parade that showcased the country's long-range weapons for the first time in two years.
  • The missile was shown on a transporter vehicle with 11 axles, would be one of the largest road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in the world if it becomes operational.
  • "This missile is a monster," said Melissa Hanham, deputy director of the Open Nuclear Network.
  • Also displayed were the Hwasong-15, which is the longest-range missile ever tested by North Korea, and what appeared to be a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

Indian Navy Conducts Coastal Security Exercise "Sagar Kavach"

  • The Indian Navy conducted a two-day coastal security exercise called "Sagar Kavach". The exercise was conducted by Indian Navy along with Indian Coastal Guard.
  • It is a half-yearly exercise to check coastal security mechanism and validate Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Around 50 patrol crafts of the Coast Guard and 20 ships of the Indian Navy participated in the exercise. Apart from the Indian Navy and the Coastal Guard, the other forces that participated in the exercise are Intelligence Bureau, Central Industrial Security Force, Marine Enforcement Wing, Fisheries Department, Cochin Port, Coastal District Administration and Coast Guard.
  • The exercise was conducted along the coastal areas of Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

India Test-fires Anti-radiation Missile Successfully

  • India test-fired the new generation anti-radiation missile called Rudram 1. The Missile has been generated to kill enemy radar.
  • The Rudram missile can be launched from Sukhoi 30MKI fighter jets. It has a speed of 2 mach. This is twice the speed of the sound. 
  • The weapon was developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation. It was tested in the Balasore test range located off the coast of Odisha in Bay of Bengal.
  • It can identify heat radiation emitting targets within the range of 250 kilometres. The missile launch was tracked by electro optical tracking system.
  • Rudram is the first indigenous anti-radiation missile.

Navy Cancels Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd's NOPV Contract

  • The Indian Navy has cancelled Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd's (RNEL) Rs. 2,500-crore naval offshore patrol vessels (NPOVs) contract, owing to delay in delivery of the vessels.
  • The contract to build five warships was signed with the company in 2011, much before the Reliance Group took over the Gujarat-based shipyard from its erstwhile owner Nikhil Gandhi.
  • The Reliance Group took over Pipavav Defence And Offshore Engineering Ltd in 2015 and later renamed it as Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd (RNEL).

Russia Successfully Test-fires Hypersonic Cruis Missile

  • Russia test-fired TSIRKON (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missile successfully in the Barents Sea.
  • The test fire was conducted from the Frigate Admiral Gorshkov Vessel in White Sea. The Missile hit the destined the target located at a distance of 450 km in less than 4 and half minutes. The Missile reached hypersonic speeds of more than Mach 8.
  • This is the second time Russia is conducting a test fire of the Missile full stop earlier it was done in January 2020 for the first time. The Missile was launched from white sea and it hit the target located in Barents Sea.
  • The test fire was conducted to celebrate the birthday of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
