LCA-SpORT Program Renamed as LCA-LIFT

  • The Supersonic Omni Role Trainer Aircraft (SpORT) a Proposed lead-in-fighter trainer (LIFT) built on the Light Combat Aircraft Twin-seater Trainer platform has been renamed as LCA-LIFT keeping with international conventions, confirmed Group Captain Harsh Vardhan Thakur, Test Pilot with HAL who had conceived SpORT Program and idrw.org has been confirmed that the program is now a full-fledged separate program which will be developed in parallel with the Tejas Mk1A Program now by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). 
  • LCA-LIFT built on the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas platform is a fighter trainer that can help pilots of modern aircraft including the Rafale and SU-30 MKi that can also be used as a Combat aircraft when required by the airforce.

China's First Domestically Built Aircraft Carrier

  • China's first domestically-built aircraft carrier Shandong has completed regular testing and training missions at sea and is expected to be combat-ready by this year-end.
  • Chinese aircraft carriers Liaoning and Shandong have completed routine training and sea trials.
  • Liaoning, a refit of the Soviet-era ship, was commissioned in 2012, while  Shandong was commissioned into the PLA Navy in December last year (2019).
  • China plans to have six aircraft carriers.

India to Get 5 Military Theatre Commands

  • The Indian military is expected to be reorganised under five theatre commands by 2022 with defined areas of operation and a seamless command structure for synchronised operations. 
  • With the department of military affairs soon to have additional and joint secretaries after Cabinet clearance, the task of reorganisation of the three services under theatre commands has begun with a China specific Northern Command and Pakistan specific Western command under serious consideration. India's Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Bipin Rawat has been given the mandate by the Narendra Modi government to create theatre commands much like the ones China and the US currently have. 

Indian Military to Get Access to US Satellite Data

  • The Indian military is set to get access to the satellite network of the United States, allowing it to target enemy positions with more precision.
  • The key pact will be signed to share real-time geo-spatial intelligence, information on maps and satellite images for defence.
  • Called the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA), it will allow geo-spatial mapping of the land mass. The imagery generated from it can be used to accurately operate drones and long-range missiles.
  • The contours of the land mass have to be known accurately to achieve precision strike from huge distances.

Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty to Enter into Force

  • The United Nations announced that 50 countries have ratified a UN treaty to ban nuclear weapons triggering its entry into force in 90 days, a move hailed by anti-nuclear activists but strongly opposed by the United States and the other major nuclear powers.
  • The treaty had 49 signatories, and UN officials said that the 50th ratification from Honduras had been received.
  • The 50th ratification came on the 75th anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter which officially established the United Nations and is celebrated as UN Day.

DRDO Start Prototype Work on VL-SRSAM (Astra BVRAAM) for Indian Navy

  • Fresh Tender documents issued by the DRDO for an 8 Cell A vertical launching system (VLS) for Vertically Launched -Short-range Surface Air to Missile, a system based on Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile has confirmed that Prototype work on construction of an VL-SRSAM missile has begun. Previous tender documents had called for the interested parties to submit bids of VL-SRSAM missile integration Jig.
  • Fresh documents show that VL-SRSAM based on the Astra Mk1 BVRAAM will be getting a first-stage Booster motor for the initial launch and for the first time a TVC (Thrust Vector Control) nozzle has also been sported. VL-SRSAM will be a next-generation, ship-based, all-weather, air defence weapon system that will provide complete protection against all known and projected air targets Over 25 km and the addition of a first-stage Booster motor will ensure a 40km+ Interception range now.

Centre Gives Approval for 47 ITBP Border Outposts

  • In the wake of tension between Indian and Chinese troops, the Centre has given approval to the ITBP to set up 47 border outposts to increase vigil along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), besides acquiring special clothing and equipment for high-altitude locations. The work is on to prepare priority border roads for the force.
  • The armies of some countries had a myth that they were among the powerful armies of the world, but during the developments in the past few months, the ITBP has broken that myth. The ITBP is the designated force to guard the 3,488-km-long Sino-India LAC that runs from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.

India and Morocco Plan to Sign Defence MoU

  • India and Morocco plan to sign MoU on defence cooperation to elevate ties to the next level riding on emerging strategic partnership and expansion in ties over the last few years.
  • This was decided when External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had a virtual meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates of the Kingdom of Morocco Nasser Bourita.
  • The Ministers agreed that both sides should expedite the finalisation of the MOU on defence cooperation and the Cultural Exchange Programme so that these can be signed on an early date.
  • The two Ministers had an in-depth exchange of views on regional and global issues, including the UN reforms, international fight against terrorism, climate change, renewable energy and cooperation under the India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) mechanism.
