World's First Whole Eye Transplant Performed in US

A team of surgeons in New York performed the world's first transplant of an entire eye in a procedure described as a medical breakthrough, although it isn't yet known whether the patient will actually regain his sight.
The groundbreaking surgery involved removing part of the face and the whole left eye of a donor and grafting them onto the recipient: a 46-year-old line worker who survived a 7,200-volt electric shock in June 2021 when his face touched a live wire.
Transplanting an entire eye has long been a holy grail of medical science, and though researchers have had some success in mice, where they have restored partial vision, it's never before been performed in a living person.

UK's Institute of Civil Engineers: Anusha Shah Takes Over as First Indian-origin President

The Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) elected Professor Anusha Shah as the first Indian-origin president in its 205-year history. ICE is an independent professional association for civil engineers and a charitable body in the UK representing 95,000 members.
As the institution's 159th president, Shah took charge of her new role with a presidential address on the theme of nature-positive civil engineering at ICE's London headquarters.
Shah specialises in water and environmental engineering, with over 22 years' experience in designing, managing and leading projects and programmes in the UK and internationally.

QS Asia University Rankings 2024

Quacquarelli Symonds released QS Asia University Rankings 2024. Two Indian institutes- IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi were ranked in the top 50 list.
IIT Bombay has secured the top position in India and 40th position in overall Asia. Similarly, IIT Delhi stood second among Indian institutes and secured 46th rank overall.
Peking University of China topped the Asia ranking list by securing Rank 1 followed by the University of Hong Kong in the second position and the National University of Singapore in the third place. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Tsinghua University, China secured 4th spot.
Zhejiang University of China secured the 6th position, Fudan University of China in 7th place, Yonsei University of South Korea in 8th spot. Korea University stood on 9th place and the Chinese University of Hong Kong secured the 10th position. A total of 856 universities from Asia are included in this year's QS Asia University Rankings.

IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus Inaugurated

At least 50 per cent of the students in the first batch at IIT Madras' Zanzibar campus are Indians while 40 per cent of the admitted students are women, according to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras Director V. Kamakoti. The Zanzibar campus which is the first offshore campus of any IIT was inaugurated by President of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
The campus started in its first semester with students from different countries including Zanzibar, India, Nepal and Tanzania Mainland.

UGC Notifies Regulations for Foreign Varsities to Set Up India Campus

Close on the heels of Australia's Western Sydney University announcing plans to establish an independent campus in Bangalore, the University Grant Commission (UGC) notified regulations permitting foreign universities ranked among the world's top 500 to set up branch campuses in India, decide their admission process, fee structure, and also repatriate funds to their parent campuses.
Two or more than two universities can collaborate to set up campuses in India, provided each institution meets the eligibility criteria individually. Each foreign university can set up more than one campus in India. However, they shall make a separate application for each proposed campus to the commission.
The guidelines were notified almost 10 months after the draft was made public for feedback. Based on the inputs, the final regulations have been tweaked. For instance, the final rules mandate that foreign universities should ensure that international faculty appointed to teach at the Indian campuses stay in the country for at least a semester.
Also, the final rules have increased the time period for the standing committee to process applications from 45 days to 60 days. The recommendations of the committee should be placed before the UGC in 60 days, as opposed to 45 days in the draft regulations.

IIT Madras Appoints 'Student Ombuds' to Address Student Concerns

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Board of Governors appointed G. Thilakavathi IPS, former Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, as 'Student Ombuds'.
In her role as Student Ombuds, G. Thilakavthi IPS will be overseeing and addressing concerns related to student grievances, safety, and disciplinary matters. Through her role, she will responsible for fostering and nurturing an inclusive atmosphere on the campus, ensuring that students have a supportive environment for their academic and personal growth.

Western Sydney University to set up Campus in Bengaluru

Western Sydney University (WSU), which is ranked 375th globally, is poised to become the third Australian university to set up a campus in India, following in the footsteps of Deakin University and the University of Wollongong.
Australian Education Minister Jason Clare said that Western Sydney University (WSU) is keen on establishing its independent campus in Bengaluru by 2025.

Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta Accepts Director Uttam Sarkar's Resignation

The Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta accepted the resignation of Director Uttam Kumar Sarkar.
The resignation was accepted with immediate effect.
Sarkar would continue as a professor in the MIS (Management Information Systems) Group of the institute.
Sahadeb Sarkar, a professor in the Operations Management Group of the Institute, was appointed as Director-in-Charge in accordance with the provisions of the IIM Act 2017.
Uttam Sarkar had been appointed Director in August 2021 after the controversial exit of Anju Seth.

IIT Kanpur Launches a Centre of Excellence Called ATMAN to Monitor Air Quality

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) established a Centre of Excellence (CoE) named ATMAN (Advanced Technologies for Monitoring Air-quality iNdicators). The CoE is a significant step towards the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative of the Government of India, focusing on building indigenous low-cost sensor manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) capabilities to enhance air quality across urban and rural areas of India.
This initiative of establishing the Center of Excellence—ATMAN has firmly positioned the institute at the forefront of efforts to combat air pollution.
Through ATMAN, IIT Kanpur is dedicated to the meticulous evaluation of health risks associated with air pollutants, as well as a comprehensive review of air quality standards.

India Ranks 2nd in Employee Well-being, Japan Lowest

Japan ranked last in a global well-being survey, with issues stemming from its lifetime job security and increasing job uncertainty. In contrast, India excelled with a positive work culture.
A recent survey conducted by the McKinsey Health Institute sheds light on the well-being of employees across 30 countries, emphasizing factors such as physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. This survey highlights significant disparities in employee well-being, with Japan ranking at the bottom and India securing a notable position.

CBSE to open new administrative Office in UAE

In a significant development for the Indian expatriate community in the United Arab Emirates, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held a meeting with the Principals of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated schools in Dubai.
One of the significant announcements made during the meeting was the acceptance of a long-standing demand by CBSE schools to open a regional administrative office in UAE, recognizing the country's central role in overseeing CBSE-affiliated schools in the GCC region.
The new office is set to come in the Emirate of Dubai, UAE. This decision is expected to streamline operations and enhance the educational experience for students and teachers in these schools.
The meeting was marked by a sense of unity and inclusion, encapsulated in the phrase "Vasudaiva Kutumbakam," which translates to "the world is one family." This move towards greater inclusivity is a promising development for the Indian expatriate community and the education sector in the UAE.

'AI' named Collins Word of the Year for 2023

The abbreviation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been named the Collins Word of the Year for 2023.
Lexicographers at Collins Dictionary said use of the term had "accelerated" and that it had become the dominant conversation of 2023.
We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology," Collins managing director Alex Beecroft said.
The word "permacrisis", defined as "an extended period of instability and insecurity" was the Collins word of the year in 2022.
