UGC Launches Two Open Online Courses on Arctic, Polar Studies

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) launched two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on arctic, polar studies on the SWAYAM portal. These courses are Understanding the Arctic: Climate and Environmental Protection, and Polar Science, Arctic Governance, Policy, and Law.

WB Education Minister Bratya Basu Announces Centralised Admission Process for UG Courses in state...

  • West Bengal's Education Minister Bratya Basu announced a centralised admission process for undergraduate courses in all state-run colleges.
  • This would negate the possibility of one student with good marks taking admission in multiple colleges at once, and then retaining his seat in the desired course and vacating the rest, Basu said, adding that because of this, a lot of seats remain empty every year.
  • In the centralised process, one candidate will be offered only one seat at a time, depending on his results with the scope to get a better opportunity in case there is a vacancy elsewhere.
  • Any student from across the country, who had passed the class 12 final examination, can apply for 25 undergraduate courses maximum through the website.

Delhi Rated Best Student City in India in QS Best Student Cities 2025

  • A total of four Indian cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, found a spot in this year's edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds Best Cities Rankings. Delhi climbed 21 places and secured the 111th spot and was named the second most affordable city for students. Bengaluru made a significant leap of 17 places to 130th spot and was the seventh most affordable city for students.
  • However, none of the Indian cities ranked made it to the top 100 for Student Mix, as the internationalisation of universities is still in its early stages. Similarly, they do not make the top 100 for Desirability, as a relatively low number of international students currently select India as a study destination.
  • Globally, London retained its spot for the world's best student city for the sixth consecutive edition, followed by Tokyo in second and Seoul in third. Munich climbed to fourth while Melbourne dropped to fifth. Sydney, Paris , Zurich, Berlin and Montreal followed at sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth spots respectively. China (Mainland) has the highest number of ranked cities, followed by Taiwan with five, and India and Indonesia with four each.

Five Indian Schools on Shortlist for World's Best School Prizes 2024

  • Five inspirational Indian schools were named in the top 10 shortlists across different categories for the annual World's Best School Prizes, organised in the UK to celebrate schools worldwide for their enormous contribution to society's progress.
  • Two schools from Madhya Pradesh and one each from Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were unveiled as being in the running across different categories for a share in the USD 50,000 prize fund. The five World's Best School Prizes – for Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity, and Supporting Healthy Lives – were founded by UK-headquartered T4 Education in the wake of COVID to give a platform to schools that are changing lives in their classrooms and beyond.
  • The five schools are: Government CM RISE Model Higher Secondary School, Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, Government Higher Secondary School Vinoba Ambedkar Nagar, Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, Kalvi International Public School, Madurai, Tamil Nadu and Mumbai Public School L K Waghji International (IGCSE), Maharashtra.

PM Modi Inaugurates New Campus of Nalanda University

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University, an international University, close to the site of the ancient ruins of Nalanda in Rajgir, Bihar.
  • The Nalanda University was established by the Parliament of India through the Nalanda University Act, in 2010. The Act formed the basis for implementing the decisions arrived at the 2nd East Asia Summit (EAS) (Philippines, 2007) for establishment of NU as "international institution for pursuit of intellectual, philosophical, historical and spiritual studies" and at the 4th East Asia Summit (Thailand, 2009).

IIT Kanpur & NSI Kanpur Sign MoU to Establish a Centre of excellence for Biofuels

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and National Sugar Institute, Kanpur (NSI Kanpur) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence for Biofuels at NSI Kanpur. The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Dept of Food & Public Distribution, Govt of India; Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur; and Seema Paroha, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
  • Under this MoU, IIT Kanpur & NSI Kanpur will engage in joint projects to conduct cutting-edge research and develop and adopt state-of-the-art technology to enhance biofuel production in the country with improved efficiency and sustainability. Biofuels are expected to play a key role in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change as well. The focus area of this collaborative research work will be the study on enhancing the production of Ethanol, Methanol, Bio-CNG, Aviation Fuel, and Green Hydrogen, etc. from biomass, a renewable source of energy.

  • The Goa government decided to introduce uniforms for students in government colleges and government-aided colleges in the state from the academic year 2024-25, saying the move will 'foster a sense of belonging" and "bridge gaps in socio-economic disparities'.
  • The Directorate of Higher Education said that the specifications of uniforms shall be decided by the respective colleges, adding that the expenditure towards uniforms of the students is not covered under the pattern of assistance.

New UGC Framework Transforms PG Studies with Flexible Multidisciplinary Options

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India unveiled a revolutionary Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes, designed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • This new framework stands out for its focus on multidisciplinary and holistic education, offering students flexible entry and exit options. UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar urged all higher education institutions to swiftly adopt this framework, which promises to empower students by letting them choose their courses and switch disciplines, in sync with the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF) and National Credit Framework (NCrF). The framework also accommodates the creditisation of work experience and allows students to pursue multiple degrees simultaneously or through online platforms.
  • One of the major highlights of the new postgraduate curriculum framework is its increased flexibility and mobility for students.

Oracle Partners with Tamil Nadu to Empower Youth with IT Skills

  • Oracle has teamed up with the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation to enhance IT skills among the state's youth through the Naan Mudhalvan program. This initiative aims to provide training and certification in cutting-edge technologies like cloud computing, data science, AI, ML, and blockchain, offering employment-linked opportunities to over 200,000 students.
  • The Naan Mudhalvan program by Oracle in collaboration with Tamil Nadu aims to equip over 200,000 students with skills in cloud computing, data science, AI, ML, and blockchain. The training will be delivered by teachers and academicians directly on campuses, supplemented by digital modules available on Oracle MyLearn.

WHO Recognises 3rd Indian Institute for Traditional Medicine Research

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) designated National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH) in Hyderabad, under the Ministry of Ayush, as a WHO Collaborating Centre (CC) for traditional medicine research.
  • NIIMH, Hyderabad is a unit under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) which will now work as a WHO centre for 'Fundamental and Literary Research in Traditional Medicine'.
  • This recognition has been granted for a period of four years.
  • CCRAS-NIIMH, Hyderabad, joined the ranks as the third WHO Collaborating Centre in the domain of traditional medicine, followed by the Institute for Teaching & Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar, and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi.

IGNOU Launches New Programme in MBA Agribusiness Management (MBAABM)

  • The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) School of Agriculture launched a Master of Business Administration (Agribusiness Management) that aims to prepare competent business professionals to boost the agricultural business and farmer's economy.
  • This new programme intends to develop business professionals for managing farm businesses and agro-based industries profitably. The programme is of two-year duration and it can be completed in the maximum duration of four years. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in any discipline are eligible to enroll in the MBA Agribusiness Management programme.
