Renowned Social Worker and Padma Shri Awardee Sindhutai Sapkal Dies

  • The renowned social worker and recipient of the Padma Shri Award, Sindhutai Sapkal passed away at the age of 74.
  • Sindhutai Sapkal, who was also referred to as 'Mai', ran an orphanage in Pune where she had adopted more than 1000 orphan children. In 2021, Sapkal was conferred with the Padma Shri award for her significant contribution to society.
  • Sapkal ran an orphanage called 'Sanmati Bal Niketan Sanstha' in Manjri near Hadapsar.
  • Besides the Padma Shri award, Sapkal had received more than 750 awards and honours. She used the award money to build shelters for orphans.

Three-time Olympic Triple Jump Champion Viktor Saneyev Dies

  • Three-time Olympic triple jump champion and former world record-holder Viktor Saneyev died at the age of 76.
  • The Soviet Union man won his Olympic titles in three consecutive Games, first in Mexico City in 1968 and then again in Munich, 1972 and followed by Montreal in 1976. He won an Olympic silver medal four years later in Moscow. He also won two European titles in 1969 and 1974.
  • Saneyev - also a six-time European indoor champion - held his boots from competitive athletics after the 1980 Olympics and was associated with the club Dynamo Tbilisi. He later worked as a coach in Australia and it was in Sydney that the triple jump great died.

Indian Navy's 1971 War Veteran Vice Admiral S.H. Sarma Passes Away

  • The Indian Navy's 1971 Indo-Pak war veteran Vice Admiral S.H. Sarma died at the age of 100.
  • Sarma was the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet during the 1971 war. India had defeated Pakistan in the 1971 war leading to the creation of Bangladesh.
  • Officials said Sarma also served as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC in C) of the Eastern Naval Command.
  • Vice Admiral Sarma had celebrated his 100th birthday on December 1 last year.

Richard Leakey, Kenyan Conservationist who Campaigned against Ivory Trade, Dies

  • Richard Leakey, a Kenyan conservationist and paleoanthropologist who spearheaded campaigns against the ivory trade to save the dwindling African elephant population, died. He was 77.
  • For years, Mr. Leakey served in various roles in the government, including as director of the state-run National Museums of Kenya and twice as board chairman at the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Indian Football: Former Goalkeeper Kanai Sarkar Passes Away

  • The All India Football Federation condoled the death of former Indian national team goalkeeper Kanai Sarkar, who passed away.
  • Kanai Sarkar made his national team debut in September 1971, in a friendly match against the USSR, and was also a part of the Bengal team which went to Tehran to participate in the Asian Club Cup in 1970.
