South Korea Carries out its First Underwater-launched Missile Test

  • South Korea has carried out its first underwater-launched missile test, hours after rival North Korea fired two ballistic missiles toward the sea.
  • President Moon observed the test of a domestically built submarine-launched ballistic missile.
  • The missile fired from a 3,000-tonne-class submarine flew a previously set distance before hitting a designated target.

India Takes Part in SCO Joint Military Exercise in Russia

  • India is participating in the sixth edition of multinational military exercise organised by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Russia's Oregon.
  • The Indian military contingent comprising an all arms combined force of 200 personnel including 38 personnel from the Indian Air Force is participating in the exercise Peaceful Mission -2021. The Indian contingent was inducted to the exercise area by two IL-76 aircrafts.
  • The aim of the exercise is to foster close relations between SCO member states and to enhance abilities of the military leaders to command multi-national military contingents.
  • The sixth edition of the military exercise 'Peaceful Mission-2021' is being hosted by Russia in the Orenburg region.
  • The SCO is an economic and security bloc in which India and Pakistan were admitted as full members in 2017. Its founding members included China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Australia to Buy U.S. Nuclear Submarines

  • As per report, Australia decided to invest in U.S. nuclear-powered submarines and dump its contract with France to build diesel-electric submarines because of a changed strategic environment.
  • President Joe Biden announced a new U.S. security alliance with Australia and Britain that would develop an Australian nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
  • As a result, Australia notified France that it would end its contract with state majority-owned DCNS to build 12 of the world's largest conventional submarines. Australia has spent 2.4 billion Australian dollars ($1.8 billion) on the project since the French won the contract in 2016.

India to Test Agni-V with Tech to Deliver Multiple Nukes to Different Targets

  • India is set to conduct the first user trial of nuke capable intercontinental-range ballistic missile (ICBM) Agni-V signalling its early induction in the armed forces. Elaborate preparation has started at a defence facility off Odisha coast for the mission by the Strategic Forces Command of Indian Army. As per the schedule the 5,000 km range missile is likely to be flight-tested on September 23.
  • Developed by DRDO, the missile is capable of hitting targets in all Asian countries and parts of Africa and Europe. With a wiring of around seven-km, the 17-metre long, 2-metre wide, three-stage, solid-fuelled missile can carry a payload of 1.5 tonne and weighs around 50 tonne. India is the eighth country to have intercontinental ballistic missiles after the US, UK, Russia, China, France, Israel and North Korea.

North Korea Tests Long-range Cruise Missiles

  • North Korea has successfully test-fired what it described as newly developed long-range cruise missiles, its first known testing activity in months that underscored how it continues to expand its military capabilities amid a stalemate in nuclear negotiations with the United States.
  • The cruise missiles, which had been under development for two years, successfully hit targets 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) away during its flight tests.

India-Japan Sixth Maritime Affairs Dialogue

  • India and Japan held their sixth Maritime Affairs Dialogue in a virtual format.
  • The dialogue involved exchanges on developments in the areas of regional cooperation activities, maritime security environment as well as the opportunities for cooperation between both the countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • First round of India-Japan Maritime dialogue was held in 2013 in New Delhi.
  • During first round of dialogue, both the countries signed Acquisition and Cross Serving Agreement. This agreement allows access to military bases of each other.
  • Through this agreement, India has access Japan base in Djibouti and Japanese Navy has access Indian Naval base in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Cairo Announces Egyptian-Indian Naval Exercises

  • Egyptian and Indian naval forces carried out a naval exercise with the participation of the Egyptian frigate (Alexandria) and the Indian frigate (INS TABAR), within the scope of the Northern Fleet's operations in the Mediterranean.
  • The training came as a continuation of the joint exercises conducted by Egypt's naval forces with global forces, which aim to enhance the combat capabilities of naval units and their crews and support maritime security and stability in the region.
  • This exercise is the second of its kind conducted by the Indian frigate (INS TABAR) with units of the Egyptian Navy in the Northern Fleet. It supports the joint endeavour to exchange experiences between the Egyptian and Indian navies, and confirms the capabilities of the Egyptian Navy in working and coordinating with global naval forces to secure international navigation and transportation lines and support maritime security efforts in the region.

India's 1st Emergency Landing Facility on National Highway in Rajasthan

  • Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh and Union Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Emergency Landing Facility on a National Highway in Rajasthan.
  • This emergency landing facility has been constructed on the Satta-Gandhav stretch of National Highway (NH) 925A in Barmer, Rajasthan.
  • On the occasion, C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft of Indian Air Force (IAF) landed at the emergency field landing at the National Highway in Jalore, Rajasthan.
  • This is the first time; a National Highway will be used for emergency landing of IAF aircraft.
  • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) developed a three kilometres section of the Satta-Gandhav stretch on NH-925A, under the supervision of IAF.
  • This facility will be used for road traffic flow on every day basis. However, during the operations of IAF, it will be used to facilitate the landing of all types of aircraft of IAF.

IAF Inducts Barak 8 Air Defence System

  • The Indian Air Force inducted a medium range surface-to-air-missile (MRSAM) system capable of knocking out aerial threats such as enemy fighter jets, missiles, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles at a range of 70 km. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the capability as a "game changer" in air defence.
  • India and Israel have jointly developed MRSAM or the Barak 8 air defence system that includes advanced radar, command and control systems, and mobile launchers. The missile is powered by a locally-developed rocket motor and control system for high manoeuvrability in the terminal phase.
  • A naval version of the MRSAM is already deployed on a few Indian warships to boost their anti-air warfare capabilities. The army too has placed orders for the MRSAM but it has not yet inducted the system.
