Sunken Museum at Humayun's Tomb Site in Delhi Inaugurated

  • The country's first sunken museum at the Humayun Tomb complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Delhi was inaugurated.
  • Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated the new museum in the presence of Prince Rahim Aga Khan.
  • The inauguration coincided with the ongoing 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
  • The museum, whose layout is inspired by the medieval 'baolis', or traditional water tanks, showcases the legacy of Mughal Emperor Humayun, including lesser-known facets of his life, and the heritage of the Nizamuddin area over the last seven centuries.

EAM Jaishankar Unveils Commemorative Postage Stamp of Ram Lalla in Laos

  • During his three day visit to Laos, the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled a special commemorative stamp set showcasing Ram Lalla's idol from Ayodhya.
  • Being touted as the first postage stamp in the world to be dedicated to Lord Ram's Ayodhya idol.
  • The set which comprises two stamps has Lord Ram's Ayodhya idol's image on one and on the other stamp, Lord Buddha is depicted.
  • Jaishankar is in Laos to attend the Foreign Ministers' Meetings under the ASEAN union.

India - US Sign Cultural Property Agreement

  • India and the US signed a bilateral cultural property agreement to facilitate the return of stolen and smuggled antiquities, many of which find their way to the US.
  • This agreement has a defined framework for the return of such artefacts to India and will facilitate smooth and early repatriation, and will also help prevent future trafficking.
  • The agreement was signed by US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti and Culture Secretary Govind Mohan, on the sidelines of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi.

Scottish Bog Gets World Heritage Status

  • After an almost 40-year campaign, a stunning but little-known UK landscape has been awarded world heritage status.
  • The Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland in the far north of Scotland covers almost 2,000 sq km (469,500 acres) of one of the most intact and extensive blanket bog systems in the world.
  • Blanket bogs are wetland ecosystems created when peat, a soil made up of partially decayed matter, accumulates in waterlogged conditions.
  • Achieving world heritage status is a rare honour – particularly for a landscape. It is an internationally recognised designation awarded to places of outstanding cultural, historical, or scientific significance.

French Museum Issues Gold Coins in Honour of Bollywood Star Shah Rukh Khan

  • The Grevin Museum in the French capital honoured Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan with its set of customised gold coins.
  • The Grevin Museum at Paris is a wax museum located on the Grands Boulevards on the right bank of the Seine River.
  • Meanwhile, SRK has been earlier immortalised in wax statues in the US, the UK, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Thailand, India, Singapore and Australia.

3500-year-old Sales Receipt in the Form of Cuneiform Tablet

  • Archaeologists made a stunning discovery when they stumbled upon a clay tablet engraved with one of the oldest sales receipts in the world in southern Turkey.
  • The tablet, which is written in cuneiform, is an ancient document which belonged to the 15th century BCE. The tablet is a record of wooden furniture purchased in large quantities.
  • Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Ersoy announced the discovery and said that the historic relic was found by researchers at Eski Alalah, in the southern province of Hatay.

Assam's Charaideo Maidam Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Charaideo Maidam was nominated to become North East India's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the cultural category. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this nomination at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held from July 21-31 in New Delhi. If accepted, Charaideo Maidam will be India's 43rd World Heritage Site, joining Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park, which are listed under the natural category.
  • Charaideo Maidam, located in Assam, India, is a site of great historical and cultural importance. These ancient burial mounds were constructed for the Ahom kings and nobles during their reign from the 13th to the 18th century. The mounds, which resemble grassy hillocks, are considered sacred by the Ahom community.
