The 5th National Water Awards 2023 Announced

The Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, announced the winners of the 5th National Water Awards (NWA), 2023. These prestigious awards recognise the efforts of individuals, organisations, and institutions across India in water conservation and management. With 38 winners across 9 categories, the awards aim to raise awareness and encourage best practices in water usage and sustainability.
In the Best State category, Odisha claimed the top prize for its exceptional work in water resource management and sustainability. Uttar Pradesh secured second place, while Gujarat and Puducherry were honoured as joint third-place winners. Each winning state has demonstrated significant efforts in the sustainable use of water resources, ensuring water security for their populations.
The award distribution ceremony for the 5th National Water Awards, 2023 is scheduled to be held on October 22, 2024 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, with President of India, Droupadi Murmu, as the Chief Guest.

ISRO Chairman S. Somanath Receives Prestigious IAF World Space Award for Chandrayaan-3

S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was honoured with the prestigious International Astronautical Federation (IAF) World Space Award. This accolade was awarded in recognition of the remarkable success of Chandrayaan-3, India's lunar mission that made history with its soft landing on the Moon's South Pole. The award ceremony took place in Milan, Italy, and marked a significant milestone in India's growing prominence in space exploration.
The IAF World Space Award is one of the most prestigious honours in the field of space science and exploration. It recognises outstanding contributions to the advancement of space technology and exploration. By awarding this distinction to s. Somanath and the Chandrayaan-3 mission, the International Astronautical Federation highlighted the global significance of India's achievements in space exploration.

Nobel in Economics 2024 Awarded to Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson

The Nobel memorial prize in economics for 2024 was awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson for research into differences in prosperity between nations.
The three economists have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for a country's prosperity.
Acemoglu and Johnson work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Robinson conducts his research at the University of Chicago.

Nihon Hidankyo Organisation Honoured with the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, received the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.
Nihon Hidankyo was founded in August 10, 1956.
Nihon Hidankyo is the only nation-wide organisation of A-bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Hibakusha).
It has member organisations in all 47 Japanese prefectures, thus representing almost all organized Hibakusha.

South Korean Author Han Kang Wins the Nobel Prize 2024 in Literature

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 was awarded to Han Kang, a prominent South Korean author, in recognition of her intense poetic prose that addresses historical traumas and unveils the fragility of human life. This accolade highlights the significant impact of her literary work, which delves deep into the complex interplay between personal and societal histories.
Before receiving the Nobel Prize, Han Kang gained international acclaim with her 2016 novel 'The Vegetarian', which won the Man Booker International Prize. This groundbreaking novel tells the story of Yeong-hye, a woman whose decision to stop eating meat after a series of disturbing dreams triggers a profound personal transformation.

Celebrating Excellence in Indian Cinema at the National Film Awards

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confers the prestigious National Film Awards along with cinema's highest honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award each year. The 70th National Film Awards were conferred by President Draupadi Murmu.
The Awards aim at encouraging the production of films of aesthetic & technical excellence and social relevance contributing to the understanding and appreciation of cultures of different regions of the country in cinematic form, thereby also promoting unity and integrity of the nation.
The National Film Awards were established in 1954 to promote cinematic excellence in India.
The first edition of the awards was held for films released in 1953 and was initially referred to as the 'State Awards'.
The first awards included two President's Gold Medals, two certificates of merit, and 12 silver medals for regional films.
The inaugural event spanned two days, featuring exhibitions and the premiere of two documentaries alongside the awards presentation.

Baker, Hassabis, Jumper Awarded Nobel 2024 in Chemistry for Pioneering Protein Research

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to David Baker for his innovative work in computational protein design and to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for their groundbreaking AI-based protein structure prediction. These discoveries, recognised by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, represent major advancements in understanding and designing proteins.
