World Hypertension Day

World Hypertension Day is celebrated by World Hypertension League (WHL) annually on May 17 to spread awareness about hypertension disease, its prevention, detection, and control. The main risk factor to develop cardiovascular disease is high blood pressure.
The beginning of celebrating this day was decided by 'The World Hypertension League' (WHL) from the year 2005. But it took a whole year to implement it. From the year 2006, from May 17, this day is being celebrated as a special day. In medical language, hypertension is called high BP.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication Day, or as it is now known, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, is celebrated on May 17 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The day highlights the impact of the Internet and other communication tools on society.
On May 17, 1969, World Telecommunications Day was first observed to mark the founding of the ITU, originally called the International Telegraph Union. The ITU was established by the signing of the very first International telegraph Convention, on May 17, 1865, in Paris. It changed its name to International Telecommunication Union in 1932 and eventually became a specialised agency of the United Nations in 1947.
The date, May 17, was also declared as World Information Society Day by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in a March 2006 resolution. In November of the same year, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference clubbed the two days collectively as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
The theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2023 was 'Empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies'.

Birthday of Indian Football Legend P. K. Banerjee to be Celebrated as 'AIFF Grassroots Day'

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) declared that June 23, the birth anniversary of Indian football legend P. K. Banerjee, will be recognised as 'AIFF Grassroots Day'. This decision was made in acknowledgment of PK's remarkable contributions to Indian football, notably his instrumental role in leading the national team to a historic Gold Medal triumph in the 1962 Asian Games. AIFF Secretary General Shaji Prabhakaran explained the selection of PK's birthday as a tribute to his outstanding career as a footballer.
P. K. Banerjee, renowned as the 'Football Professor' in international circles, demonstrated his dedication to football development by enrolling in FIFA's inaugural coaching course held in Japan in 1969 under German coach Dettmar Cramer. P. K. successfully completed the course, earning a First-Class degree. The establishment of AIFF Grassroots Day aligns with the Strategic Roadmap 'Vision 2047', which aims to enhance grassroots participation in Indian football. The objective is to involve 35 million children in football by 2026 and eventually reach 100 million by 2047. As part of this initiative, the Federation has introduced the Blue Cubs program, collaborating with NGOs, schools, clubs, academies, and other stakeholders to expand the grassroots ecosystem.

International Day of Light

The International Day of Light is a global observance that occurs annually on May 16. It was established by UNESCO to celebrate the significance of light in various aspects of our lives, including science, culture, and sustainable development.
This special day was established to commemorate the anniversary of a ground-breaking achievement in the field of science, the successful operation of the laser on May 16, 1960, by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman.
International Day of Light was first introduced by the European Physical Society in 2015. The main agenda to introduce this day was to celebrate the crucial role of light-based technologies in our daily lives. Several organizations supported this proposal.
UNESCO took up the proposal and understood the importance of this day. It officially declared May 16 as the International Day of Light in 2017. This day was celebrated for the first time on May 16, 2018.
This day is a call to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential to foster peace and sustainable development.

International Day of Living Together in Peace

The International Day of Living Together in Peace is celebrated annually on May 16 to encourage peace, tolerance, inclusivity, understanding, and solidarity among individuals and communities globally. Its goal is to emphasize the significance of cultivating peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and harmony among people of different backgrounds. The International Day of Living Together in Peace is an opportunity for people from all over the world to come together and celebrate peace.
In the aftermath of World War II, the United Nations recognised the importance of preventing future wars and addressing global inequality. To promote peace and equality, the UN initiated efforts like the International Year for the Culture of Peace in 2000 and the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World from 2001 to 2010. The adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace in 1999 further highlighted the need for long-lasting peace and non-violence.
In 2017, the UN General Assembly reaffirmed its commitment by designating May 16 as the International Day of Living Together in Peace. This day aims to foster inclusion, tolerance, solidarity, and peace among diverse communities worldwide.

National Dengue Day

National Dengue Day is observed on May 16 every year to raise awareness about the mosquito-borne disease. Dengue cases usually surge in India during and after the monsoon season. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organises different events to observe National Dengue Day at several levels across the country.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare officially announced the annual observance of National Dengue Day on May 16 with an aim to educate more people about dengue and encourage them to follow preventive measures to stop its spread.

International Day of Families

Every year on May 15, the International Day of Families is held to promote family well-being throughout the world, and to increase awareness of the value of families as the cornerstone of society. This day offers a chance to consider the obligations that families have in society, to draw attention to the social, economic, and demographic changes that have an impact on families, and to support family friendly activities.
The International Day of Families was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to raise awareness of family-related issues and to advance understanding of the social, economic, and demographic factors impacting families. Every year, there is a different theme for the International Day of Families which is observed through a variety of programmes, events, and activities.
The theme of International Day of Families 2023 was 'Families And Demographic Change'.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day, holiday in honour of mothers that is celebrated in countries throughout the world. In its modern form the holiday originated in the United States, where it is observed on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries also celebrate the holiday on this date, while some mark the observance at other times of the year. During the Middle Ages the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This became Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother's Day.
Mother's Day is a special day that honours and celebrates mothers worldwide. The day holds a significant place in our hearts because it gives us a chance to express our gratitude, love, and appreciation for our mothers.
Mother's Day is marked on varying dates across the globe. As per convention, in numerous nations like the United States, India and others it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. In the year 2023, it was celebrate on May 14.
The origins of Mother's Day date back to ancient Greece, where the festival of Rhea, the mother of the gods, was celebrated in mid-March. Christian traditions later adopted the celebration as a way to honour Mary, the mother of Jesus, and renamed it Mothering Sunday. In the United States, Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who wanted a day to commemorate her mother, who had died. Though it was originally celebrated on the second Sunday of May, International Mother's Day is now a universal celebration across all countries.

World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day is a global event held twice a year on the second Saturday of May and October. It brings together bird enthusiasts to promote the conservation of migratory birds and raise awareness about their significance. In 2023, the focus is on water and its importance for these birds. May 13, marked the celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. World Migratory Bird Day 2023 was officially held on 13 May 13 and will again be held on October 14.
In 1993, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology began celebrations of the International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD). Thereafter, the first World Migratory Bird Day was launched by AEWA and CMS in April 2006, at the famous wildlife reserve called 'Ol Ari Nyiro, owned by Ms. Kuki Gallmann in Laikipia, Kenya.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) website, the World Migratory Bird Day 2023 focuses on 'Water and its importance for migratory birds'.
