V Mohini Giri Passes Away

  • Renowned women's rights activist V. Mohini Giri died at the age of 86.
  • Giri was the former Chair of the National Commission for Women (NCW) (1995–1998) and of the Central Social Welfare Board. She was also the Chairperson of the Guild of Service, a New Delhi–based social service organisation, which provides advocacy for women's and children's rights for education, employment, and financial security.
  • She founded the War Widows Association in 1972. For her efforts in the field of women's rights, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007.

Kuwait Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Passes Away

  • Emir of Kuwait, Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, passed away at the age of 86.
  • Nawaf was sworn in as Emir following the 2020 death of his predecessor, the late Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
  • Nawaf previously served as Kuwait's Interior and Defence Minister but was not seen as particularly active in government outside those terms.

Bengali Singer Anup Ghoshal Passes Away

  • Bengali singer Anup Ghoshal, who is best known for the 'Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi' number from the 1983 film Masoom and immortalised the songs in several Satyajit Ray's musicals, passed away. Ghoshal was 77.
  • Anup Ghosal had successfully contested the 2011 assembly polls from Uttarpara seat on the Trinamool Congress ticket.

Emmy-Winning Actor Andre Braugher Passes Away

  • Emmy-winning actor Andre Braugher, renowned for his notable roles in series such as 'Homicide: Life on The Street' and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine', passed away at the age of 61. Born in Chicago, Braugher gained widespread recognition with his breakthrough role in the 1989 film "Glory," alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.
  • Andre Braugher's career took off with his pivotal role in "Glory," a film depicting the experiences of an all-Black army regiment during the Civil War. The actor's compelling performance earned him his first Emmy in 1998, securing the trophy for lead actor in a drama series. This marked the beginning of a distinguished career.

Gao Yaojie, Renowed AIDS Activist Dies At 95

  • Gao Yaojie, a trailblasing Chinese doctor and activist, passed away at the age of 95 in the United States. She was known for her fearless exposure of the AIDS virus epidemic in rural China during the 1990s.
  • Gao rose to prominence as China's most prominent AIDS activist, exposing blood-selling schemes that infected thousands with HIV. Her unwavering commitment to addressing the crisis earned her international recognition and forced the Chinese government to confront the AIDS epidemic well into the 2000s.

Indian-American Medical Student from Michigan is Miss India USA 2023

  • Rijul Maini, a medical student from Michigan, was crowned Miss India USA 2023 at the annual pageant held in New Jersey.
  • During the event, Sneha Nambiar from Massachusetts was declared as Mrs India USA and Saloni Rammohan from Pennsylvania won the title of Miss Teen India USA.
  • The pageant is the longest running Indian pageant outside of India. It was started by New York-based Indian-Americans Dharmatma and Neelam Saran, in 1990, under the banner of Worldwide Pageants.
