Keshav Desiraju, Former Union Health Secretary, Passes Away

  • Keshav Desiraju, former Union Health Secretary and grandson of former President S. Radhakrishnan passed away. He was 66.
  • Desiraju was an IAS officer from the 1978 batch of Uttarakhand cadre. He had a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
  • He has held many positions with the governments of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India and retired as the Union Secretary in the Department of Consumer Affairs. After he retired, he was appointed as the chairperson of the governing board of the Population Foundation of India.
  • Tamil Nadu chief minister M. K. Stalin expressed grief over Desiraju's death.

Former RS Member Chandan Mitra Passes Away

  • Veteran journalist and former Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra died after a long ailment. He was 65.
  • Mitra did a stint in various newspapers, including the Times of India and Hindustan Times, in his long career as a journalist before he became the Editor of The Pioneer.
  • Mitra started his journalism career with The Statesman in Kolkata. He joined The Pioneer, which he headed editorially for around 24 years, after stints at The Times of India, Sunday Observer and Hindustan Times newspapers.

Separatist Leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani Passes Away

  • The patriarch of separatist politics in the Valley and hardline Hurriyat hawk, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, passed away in Srinagar.
  • A former elected legislator, the ailing 92-year-old had been under house detention for more than a decade. His death comes when both his and the moderate factions of the Hurriyat are in disarray in the wake of a crackdown by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the abrogation of Article 370 and the downgrade of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.
  • Geelani's electoral career started from Sopore, a traditional separatist and Jamat stronghold. He first contested the Assembly elections in 1972, and represented Sopore in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for three terms. The last term ended abruptly in 1987 when militancy erupted in Kashmir.

Rajasthan Appoints Avani Lekhara as 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' Ambassador

  • The Rajasthan government appointed shooter Avani Lekhara, who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics as the brand ambassador of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign in the state.
  • Women and child development minister Mamta Bhupesh said that her department is proud to name Lekhara for the campaign.
  • Lekhara's involvement will create an enabling environment in the society to educate daughters.

Rajni Kaul, the First News Broadcaster for BBC Hindi Passes Away

  • Rajni Kaul who was the first News Broadcaster for BBC Hindi passed away in Faridabad, Haryana. She was 93. She was not only the first woman to join BBC Hindi as a staff member but she also became the first woman to read a news bulletin in Hindi on the network in 1961. She was well-known for her programme Indradhanush.

Jacques Rogge, Former IOC president, Passes Away

  • Former International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge passed away at the age of 79.
  • Rogge served as president from 2001 to 2013, overseeing three summer Games and three winter Games, as well as creating the Youth Olympics.
  • Rogge was a rugby player who represented his native Belgium on the national team. He also competed in sailing, representing Belgium at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968, Munich in 1972 and Montreal in 1976.
  • Rogge also headed the European Olympic Committee from 1989 to 2001 before being elected president of the IOC, taking over from Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Sonu Sood is Brand Ambassador for AAP Government's 'Desh ka Mentors' Programme

  • Poular Bollywood actor Sonu Sood was named the brand ambassador by Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government in Delhi for the 'Desh ka mentors' programme. Delhi Chief Minister said under this initiative students will be guided in making their career choices.

Leading Indian Leprologist S. K. Noordeen

  • The World Health Organisation mourned the loss of legendary Indian leprologist Dr. Shaik Khader Noordeen who led the global fight against leprosy during its most critical years and oversaw the rollout of multi drug therapy, the mainstay of leprosy treatment to date. S. K. Noordeen was 88.
  • Hailing from Chennai, Dr. Noordeen was the director of the WHO's Action Programme for the Elimination of Leprosy from 1994 to 1998, during the crucial years that saw the global roll-out and implementation of multidrug therapy (MDT) which remains, to this day, the main tool for the treatment and elimination of the disease.
  • He led the International Leprosy Association, was a Founding Trustee and Chair of the Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation and a Member of the Technical Resource Group of India's National Leprosy Eradication Programme.
  • Before joining WHO, Dr Noordeen had led the Central Leprosy Training and Research Institute in his native state of Tamil Nadu.
