Veteran Filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta Dies

  • National award-winning filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta died in his south Kolkata after a prolonged illness. He was 77.
  • Some of his prominent films include Tahader Katha, Bagh Bahadur, Charachar and Uttara. He received the National Film Award multiple times and in several categories, including best film, best direction, best screenplay and best feature film in Bengali.
  • He also received accolades at the Venice Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Asia Pacific Film Festival and Bangkok International Film Festival.
  • Some of his earlier films, such as Grihajuddha and Andhi Gali, focused on the Maoist movement in Bengal and how it shaped the collective consciousness of Bengalis.

Rajkummar Rao to Endorse D2C fashion Brand Bewakoof.com

  • Director-to-consumer (D2C) fashion brand Bewakoof announced the appointment of actor Rajkummar Rao as its brand ambassador.
  • He will promote the products across digital and social media platforms through campaigns and promotional activities.
  • The first brand marketing campaign comprising digital films features Rao dressed in Bewakoof tees and doling out summer style tips.
  • Launched in 2012 by Prabhkiran Singh, Bewakoof claims to have 10 million strong customer base. It sells around 20,000 units of apparels and accessories a day.

Government Extends Term of M. K. Jain as Deputy Governor of RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India said that the government has extended the tenure of Deputy Governor Mahesh Kumar Jain for two years.
  • Jain was appointed as deputy governor for three years in June 2018.
  • Before joining the Reserve Bank of India, he was managing director of IDBI Bank.
  • The other three serving deputy governors are Michael Patra, M Rajeshwar Rao and T Rabi Sankar.

Govt. Extends M. R. Kumar's Term as LIC Chairman

  • The appointments committee of the cabinet approved the extension of M. R. Kumar as the chairman of state-owned insurance behemoth Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
  • Kumar's term as LIC chairman was supposed to end on June 30, 2021, but Centre extended his term by almost nine more months till March 13, 2022.

Former PM Narashimha Rao's OSD Ram Khandekar Dies

  • Ram Khandekar, who had worked as an officer on special duty (OSD) to former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, died. He was 87.
  • Khandekar had worked as the personal secretary to former Maharashtra chief minister and former defence minister late YB Chavan. Later, he had also worked with former Union minister late Vasant Sathe, from 1980 to 1985.
  • When Rao became the Prime Minister in 1991, he appointed Khandekar as his OSD. Khandekar remained Rao's close associate till the latter's death.

Facebook Names Spoorthi Priya as Grievance Officer for India

  • Social media platform Facebook named Spoorthi Priya as its grievance officer for India. This move comes close on the heels of the new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, coming into force last month.
  • According to the new government guidelines, social media companies with over 50 lakh users have to appoint a grievance officer, nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. All three personnel will have to be residents of India. Facebook owned messaging platform WhatsApp appointed Paresh B Lal as the grievance officer a few days ago.

Rhea Chakraborty Tops the Times 50 Most Desirable Women 2020 list

  • The Times 50 Most Desirable Women 2020 list was unveiled, and it featured women under 40 across various fields. It put the spotlight on those who have made a mark in the last one year and won hearts.
  • The ranking was based on votes cast in an online poll (www.toi.in/mostdesirablewomen), along with an internal jury.
  • This year Rhea Chakraborty has topped the list. A superficial reading of the word 'desirable' would have you think it is all about physical appeal and glamour. But it's not just about charm, physique or good looks. It is also about how much you think about a person, about the mind space an individual occupies.
  • Adline Castelino (Miss Universe 2020 - 3rd Runner-up) at number 2, Disha Patani at number 3, Kiara Advani at number 4 and Deepika Padukone.

Trevor Ringland is NI Special Envoy to the US

  • Former Ireland rugby player Trevor Ringland has been appointed as the UK's first special envoy to the United States on Northern Ireland.
  • The appointment was announced by Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis with the aim of strengthening ties between the two nations.
  • The move has been welcomed by Ulster Unionists and the Democratic Unionists.
  • As special envoy, Mr. Ringland who is a solicitor will work with US firms and investors with an interest in Northern Ireland, to build on established links and support Northern Ireland's long-term economic development.

Assamese litterateur Lakshmi Nandan Bora Passes Away

  • Noted Assamese litterateur Lakshmi Nandan Bora passed away at a hospital in Guwahati. He was 89.
  • An acclaimed novelist and short story writer in the Assamese language, Lakshmi Nandan Bora has authored over 60 books including Patal Bhairavi and Kayakalpa.
  • Lakshmi Nandan Bora's first short story, titled 'Bhaona' was published in Assamese magazine, Ramdhenu, in 1954. 'Dristirupa' is his first book was published in 1958. He published his first novel 'Gonga Silonir Pakhi' in 1963.
  • For 'Patal Bhairavi', Lakshmi Nandan Bora won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988. In 2008, he published Kayakalpa, which won the Saraswati Samman from KK Birla Foundation.
  • He was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

Mauritius Former Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth Passes Away

  • The former Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Mauritius, Sir Anerood Jugnauth passed away. He is the country's longest-serving Prime Minister with more than 18 years of tenure. He was considered the father of the Mauritian economic miracle of the 1980s.
  • Jugnauth held the post of Prime Minister between 1982 and 1995, then again between 2000 and 2003, and later between 2014 and 2017, before passing the torch to his son, Pravind Jugnauth, who is the current Prime Minister of Mauritius.
