Rare Tintin Comic Book Art Set to Sell for Millions

  • Not even the coronavirus can get in the way of intrepid Belgian reporter and comic book legend Tintin.
  • Comic book lovers and tourists alike can catch a socially distanced glimpse of a Tintin drawing by Herge in Paris before it goes under the hammer, estimated to sell between 2 and 3 million euros and possibly break the record for the most expensive comic book art in history.
  • The 1936 work in Chinese ink, gouache and watercolor, was destined as a cover for The Blue Lotus, the fifth volume of the Belgian journalist's adventures. But it never sat on any book store shelves because it was rejected for being too expensive to reproduce on a wide scale - a victim of its own rare craftsmanship.

In a swift Post-Brexit Move, UK Rejects EU's Strict Import Rules on Cultural Property

  • Just days after leaving the European Union, the UK has rejected the new import licensing regulations for cultural property introduced by the EU in 2019 and due to be enforced by 2025.
  • Aimed at preventing crime—in particular terrorism financing—the controversial law faced stiff opposition from the art market, which argued that its compliance measures would make business impossible for many dealers, auction houses and collectors.

Uttarakhand Tableau on Kedarnath Temple Selected for Republic Day Parade

  • Uttarakhand's tableau featuring the Kedarnath temple has been selected by the defence ministry for the upcoming Republic Day parade in New Delhi.
  • Uttarakhand's table was among the tableaus of 32 states and UTs which participated in the process and only 17 were selected.
  • Uttarakhand's tableau has been selected for the 12th time for the Republic Day parade since the formation of the state in 2020. Before this, the state's tableau was selected for the Republic Day parade in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.

National Gallery of Art Acquires 40 Works from Souls Grown Deep

  • The Souls Grown Deep Foundation, an Atlanta-based organization focused on Black artists of the American South, has given 40 works to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
  • Included in the acquisition are works by 21 artists, including nine pieces by the Gee's Bend quilters, three sculptures by Lonnie Holley, and seven pieces by Thornton Dial. Also in the group are four sculpted heads by James "Son Ford" Thomas that had been on view in the National Gallery's 2018 show "Outliers and American Vanguard Art."

Rehung and Revamped Mona Museum in Tasmania Opens its Doors after Nine-month Closure

  • One of Australia's most important contemporary art museums re-opened after closing its doors for nine months. The Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart (Mona), Tasmania, has been rehung during the pandemic, drawing on the collection of its founder, the gambler and mathematician David Walsh.
  • New pieces on show include a giant bronze sculpture by US artist Tom Otterness, Girls Rule (2020), which doubles up as a children's playground while House of Mirrors (2016), created by the Australian artists Christian Wagstaff and Keith Courtney, invites visitors to get lost in a bewildering maze. Other works on display include the porcelain sculpture series Cunts and other conversations (2008-11) by Greg Taylor and Sidney Nolan's paintings such as Dog and Duck Hotel (1948).
