Nobel Prizes

  • The Nobel Prizes are five separate prizes that, according to Alfred Nobel's will of 1895, are awarded to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.
  • Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901.
  • Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace (Nobel characterised the Peace Prize as "to the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses").
  • The prize ceremonies take place annually. Each recipient (known as a 'laureate') receives a green gold medal plated with 24 karat gold, a diploma, and a monetary award.
  • A prize may not be shared among more than three individuals, although the Nobel Peace Prize can be awarded to organisations of more than three people.

Mani Ratnam and Luca Guadagnino Receive Excellence in Cinema Award at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival

  • Popular Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam and Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino were presented with the Excellence in Cinema Award at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival (October 27 to November 5). The award was presented to both the filmmakers at the opening night ceremony on October 27, 2023. Both directors attended the festival and received this prestigious accolade.
  • MAMI's Excellence in Cinema award honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the world of cinema. Previous recipients of the awards include Darren Aronofsky, Sharmila Tagore, Fernando Meirelles, and Chen Kaige.

The Hindu Young World Wins Gold at WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards 2023

  • The gold at the WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards 2023 in the 'Best in Newspaper Marketing' category was won by 'The Hindu' for their successful campaigns promoting Young World's special issues. This recognition was awarded to 'The Hindu' for their outstanding marketing efforts and campaigns that effectively promoted and increased the readership base of Young World's special issues, which focus on providing insights into specific topics and staying current with trends.

Two Indian-American Scientists Awarded United State's Highest Scientific Honour

  • Two Indian American scientists, Ashok Gadgil and Subra Suresh, were awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, which is the highest honour for technological achievement in the United States.
  • US President Joe Biden conferred the medals on Gadgil and Suresh.
  • Gadgil, who currently works as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and a senior scientist of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is a renowned inventor and innovator in the field of sustainable development. His work has focused on developing affordable and effective technologies to improve access to clean water, energy efficiency, and sanitation in developing countries.
  • Subra Suresh, an Indian-born American bioengineer, materials scientist, and academic, is a Professor Emeritus and former dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focusses on the intersection of engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, and medicine. He was the first Asian-born professor to lead any of the five schools at MIT.

Venkaiah Naidu Nominated Jury Member of Gandhi Peace Prize

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the appointment of former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu as a nominated jury member for the annual Gandhi Peace Prize.
  • The five-member jury is headed by the Prime Minister, with the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha as its permanent members, while two other jury members are nominated for a period of three years. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is also a nominated member.
  • Naidu replaced Sulabh International Founder Bindeshwar Pathak on the jury, a former Gandhi Peace Prize winner, who passed away in 2023.
