Renowned Vedic Scholar Sudhakar Chaturvedi Passes Away

  • Renowned Vedic Scholar and Gandhian Sudhakar Chaturvedi passed away in Bengaluru today. The centenarian was given the title Chaturvedi for his mastery over the four vedas. Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and Arya Samaj movement, he had ed over 50 spiritual books in four languages. He had spent his last few years in the teaching of Vedas to young enthusiasts.

Abhishek Next Ambassador of India to Venezuela

  • Diplomat Abhishek Singh has been appointed India's next Ambassador to Venezuela.
  • Singh, a 2003-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian embassy in Kabul, the MEA said in a statement.
  • He is expected to take up the assignment "shortly".

S. N. Shrivastava New Police Commissioner of Delhi

  • The home ministry appointed S. N. Shrivastava as Delhi's Police Commissioner.
  • Shrivastava is currently Special Commissioner of Police, Delhi, a charge he was given on Tuesday.
  • The 1985 batch Indian Police Service officer takes over from Amulya Patnaik, who superannuates on Saturday.
  • Shrivastava has earlier served as Special Director General of the Jammu and Kashmir Zone of CRPF, and headed the Delhi police's special cell.
  • He has been tasked with taking over the force from 1 March "until further orders".
  • The Delhi police received major flak for failing to contain the violence that gripped the city's north-east district since Sunday.

Former Tamil Nadu Minister K. P. P. Samy Passes Away

  • Former Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) present Thiruvottiyur (state assembly constituency) Member of Legislative assembly (MLA) K. P. P. Samy passed away at age of 57 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Samy born in Chennai was elected as MLA of Tiruvottiyur in 2006 election and became Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development and corporation Minister between 2006 and 2011 under the cabinet formed by the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi.

Centenarian Freedom Fighter Sudhakar Chaturvedi Passes Away

  • Centenarian freedom fighter and Vedic scholar Sudhakar Krishna Rao, widely known as Sudhakar Chaturvedi died due to old age related ailments. Rao, an eye-witness to the Jalianwala Bagh massacre on April 13, 1919, breathed his last at his resident in. He was said to be 122 year old. Rao was given the title Pundit Sudhakar Chaturvedi for his authority on all the four Vedas.

Smatphone Brand Realme Appoints Salman Khan as Brand Ambassador

  • Smartphone brand Realme appointed Bollywood actor Salman Khan as its brand ambassador. The actor will be endorsing the upcoming Realme 6 and Realme 6 Pro phone models.
  • Madhav Sheth, vice-president of Realme and CEO of Realme India said that having Salman Khan on board with a mammoth fan following will help us reach and tap into that target audience of ours.
  • This is Khan's first association with a smartphone brand. The brand will leverage Khan's popularity to promote Realme 6 series among millennials across India.

Jawed Ashraf Appointed India's Next Envoy to France

  • Diplomat Jawed Ashraf was appointed as the next Ambassador of India to France.
  • Ashraf, a 1991-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is currently serving as Indian High Commissioner to Singapore and is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
  • A career diplomat, High Commissioner Ashraf joined the IFS in 1991.
  • He served in Frankfurt and Berlin from 1993 to 1999 and he worked in the Americas Division of MEA in New Delhi from 1999 to 2004.

Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian President Dies

  • Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's autocratic former president who ruled with an iron fist for three decades before being toppled during the Arab spring protests in 2011, died aged 91.
  • Mubarak became a symbol of thuggish and brutal authority after taking power in 1981 following the assassination of Anwar Sadat. His reign was marked by the emergence of a paranoid and cruel police state supported by a network of sprawling military businesses and corrupt crony businessmen.

Cibil Appoints Rajesh Kumar as MD and CEO

  • TransUnion Cibil, the largest credit information bureau, appointed Rajesh Kumar of HDFC Bank as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
  • Kumar succeeded Satish Pillai who became the president of Asia region business of the US-based company.
  • Prior to joining Cibil, Kumar was the group head for retail credit and risk at HDFC Bank. With two decades of experience at HDFC Bank, he helped the second largest bank grow its retail lending book to USD 50 billion, leading a team of more than 3,000 officers.
  • In his role as the MD and chief executive, Kumar will be responsible for steering Cibil India's business into the next phase by ensuring it continues to support the domestic finance industry and consumers.

Katherine Johnson Dies

  • Pioneering African-American NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson died at the age of 101.
  • Ms. Johnson calculated rocket trajectories and Earth orbits for NASA's early space missions.
  • She was portrayed in the 2016 Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures.
  • The film tells the story of African-American women whose maths skills helped put US astronaut John Glenn into orbit around the Earth in 1962. Ms. Johnson verified the calculations made by new electronic computers before his flight.
  • Ms. Johnson had previously calculated the trajectory for the space flight of Alan Shepard - the first American in space.

Ms. Padmaja Next High Commissioner to Vanuatu

  • Ms. Padmaja, presently High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Fiji, has been concurrently accredited as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Vanuatu, with the residence in Suva.
  • Padmaja is the Post Graduate in History from the University of Allahabad and joined the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in 1986 and her first posting abroad was in Bangladesh.
  • She worked in Indian Council of World Affairs before proceeding to London in 2010, and dealt with Media & Information and Public Diplomacy.

Abhay Kumar Singh Appointed CMD of NHPC

  • State-run hydro power giant NHPC appointed Abhay Kumar Singh as the company's Chairman & Managing Director from February 24, 2020.
  • Abhay Kumar Singh assumed the charge of Chairman and Managing Director of the company on February 24, 2020 till the date of his superannuation, i.e. August 31, 2022, or until further orders, whichever is earlier in place of Ratish Kumar who was holding additional charge of the post of Chairman & Managing Director in addition to his duties as Director (Projects).

MP Drafts Right to Water Law

  • Madhya Pradesh drafted a Right To Water legislation that promises a minimum of 55 litres a day per person to the state's 76.2 million residents, a fine and a jail term of up to 18 months for anyone affecting the quality of water, and a 0.5% cess on all construction work to fund development of water infrastructure. MP is the first state in the country to have drafted such a law. The Centre last year announced a Jal Shakti Mission promising piped drinking water to every household by 2024.
  • The draft law, a copy of which has been seen by Hindustan Times, is based on the public trust doctrine, which provides for citizens having the first right over natural resources. The MP government seeks to consider water a "fundamental right" on the lines of right of life enshrined in the Constitution.
  • "The Right to Water Act will be based on equal and fundamental right of every citizen over natural resources like the Right to Food and Freedom.
  • The draft aims to set up two bodies — the state water management authority (SWMA) to ensure protection of quality of water sources and soil health besides stipulating regulations for treatment plans and Jal Manch, a committee of stakeholders in every panchayat.

Ram Niwas Goel Re-elected Delhi Assembly Speaker

  • Aam Aadmi Party MLA Ram Niwas Goel was unanimously re-elected as the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly for the second consecutive time.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia moved a proposal nominating the name of Goel for the post of Speaker.
  • The proposal was supported by MLAs Kuldeep Kumar, Satendra Jain, Praveen Kumar, Dinesh Mohania, S. K. Bagga, Vishesh Ravi and Raghav Chaddha after which the motion was passed.
  • Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that it is a good thing that Goel was unanimously re-elected by both ruling and opposition members of the House. Goel is an MLA from Shahdara.
