Namibian President Hage Geingob Passes Away

Namibia's President Hage Geingob passed away at the gae of 82, weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.
Geingob played a central role in what has become one of Africa's most stable democracies after returning from a long exile in Botswana and the United States as an anti-apartheid activist.
He was the country's third President since it gained independence in 1990 following more than a century of German and then apartheid South African rule.
He had been president since 2015 and was set to finish his second and final term in office this year (2024).

First from Odisha to Win National Award for Best Actor, Sadhu Meher Dies

Eminent actor and director Sadhu Meher, who had made a mark in both Hindi and Odia cine industries, passed away. He was 84.
A native of Manamunda in Odisha's Boudh district, Meher began his career in 1969 with Hindi films like 'Bhuvan Shome', 'Ankur', and 'Mrigaya' before shifting focus to Odia cinema. Five years later in 1974, he became the first from Odisha to win a national award for best actor, for his role in Shyam Benegal's Hindi film 'Ankur'. Meher was also known for his role in other Hindi films like 27 Down (1974), Manthan (1976) and Inkaar (1977).
For his lifetime contribution, the Odisha government had conferred the Jaydev Samman on Meher in 2011. Meher also received the Padma Shri in 2017.

Poonam Pandey Dies of Cervical Cancer

Actress-model Poonam Pandey died due to cervical cancer at the age of 32.
Pandey gained prominence in 2011 following a statement that stirred controversy during the ICC Cricket World Cup. Subsequently, she ventured into the entertainment industry, making appearances in numerous films and reality shows. Her credits include Bollywood movies such as Nasha and Aa Gaya Hero, as well as participation in Kangana Ranaut's reality show, Lock Upp.

Historian R. Champakalakshmi Passes Away

The academic community mourned the passing away of R. Champakalakshmi, a revered historian, former president of the Indian History Congress, and professor at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her death marked a significant loss in the scholarly world, particularly in the field of Indian history.
R. Champakalakshmi's career was distinguished by her deep and varied expertise in subjects such as archaeology, iconography, ideology, statecraft, and trade. She was known for her ability to bridge the gap between traditional and modern approaches in historiography, contributing significantly to the understanding of early and medieval South India.

Dr. Nitya Anand, Man Who Discovered India's First Oral Contraceptive Pill 'Saheli', Passes Away

Dr. Nitya Anand who made the first oral contraceptive pill 'Saheli' in India, passed away at the age of 99. Dr. Anand was in charge of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) from 1974 to 1984. He was part of CDRI since it started in 1951. He guided 100 PhD students, wrote over 400 papers, and had more than 130 patents.
Dr. Anand made Saheli, a unique birth control pill, used once a week and without steroids or hormones. It was introduced in 1986 by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In 2016, Saheli became part of India's National Family Programme. It is still the only pill of its kind in the world.
Dr. Anand was awarded the Padma Shri award.
