Former Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat HC Vijay Manohar Sahai Passes Away

  • Former acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Vijay Manohar Sahai, died. He was 68.
  • Justice Sahai, who was a Judge in the Allahabad High Court, graduated in Law from the University of Allahabad in 1975 and got enrolled as an advocate in January 1976.
  • Justice Sahai, who was appointed Standing Counsel for the New India Assurance Co., Union Bank of India, and Allahabad Bank, was elevated as permanent Judge on February 5, 1999 and was later on transferred to Gujarat High Court.

Manisha Kapoor Joins Executive Committee of ICAS

  • Advertising industry watchdog Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) announced that its general secretary Manisha Kapoor has been appointed to the executive committee of the International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (ICAS).
  • She will be one of the four global vice-presidents on the executive committee. Set up by the European Advertising Standards Alliance in 2008, ICAS is a global platform of self-regulatory organizations (SROs).
  • Until April, ASCI served on the executive committee as a member for a two-year term. Now, Kapoor will play a leadership role on the committee till 2023.
  • In her role as part of the ICAS leadership team, she will promote advertising self-regulation as an optimal mechanism for consumer protection, strengthen ICAS as a global alliance and facilitate knowledge sharing among SROs to establish best practices and monitor global trends in the advertising ecosystem that impact self-regulation.

Eminent Assamese Writer Homen Borgohain Passes Away

  • Eminent writer, veteran journalist, Sahitya Akademi award winner, and former president of Asom Sahitya Sabha, Homen Borgohain passed away. He was 88.
  • Homen Borgohain was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in the Assamese language for his novel Pita Putra in 1978, but he returned his Sahitya Akademi award in 2015 in protest against the lack of tolerance being created in the Indian society.
  • His other notable literary works are Saudor Puteke Nao Meli Jay, Halodhiya Soraye Baudhan Khai, Astarag, Timir Tirtha, Matshyagandha, Subala, Nisongota, Aatmanuxandhan, Gadyar Sadhana, Progyar Sadhana, etc.
  • Borgohain edited several Assamese dailies and weekly newspapers including Nilachal, Nagorik, Amar Asom, Asom Bani, Xutradhar, Xatxori, Niyamiya Barta. The prominent journalist, novelist's death has been widely mourned across the state.

Actor and Director Norman Lloyd Passes Away

  • American actor, producer and director Norman Lloyd, whose career of more than 80 years included collaborations with legends such as Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, has died at the age of 106.
  • His last movie appearance as an actor was in the 2015 raunchy comedy "Trainwreck," starring Amy Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow.

Kerala's First Revenue Minister Gouri Amma Passes Away

  • The first Revenue Minister of Kerala and JSS leader KR Gouri Amma passed away in Thiruvananthapuram where she was admitted due to age-related ailments. She was 102.
  • KR Gouri had recently stepped down from the state general secretary post of the Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithi (JSS). She held the post since the formation of the party in 1994.
  • The party was formed after Gouri was expelled from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1994. She served as Revenue Minister in the first EMS Namboodiripad government and introduced the revolutionary Land Reforms Bill in 1957.
  • She also was a minister in the communist-led ministries in Kerala in 1957, 1967, 1980 and 1987. She became Agriculture Minister in the Congress-led government from 2001 to 2006.
  • She played a key role in drafting and presenting the Women's Commission Bill in 1987. One of the longest serving politicians in Kerala politics, Gouri entered politics at a young age.

Ravinder Pal, 1980 Moscow Olympics Hockey Great, Passes Away

  • Former Indian hockey player and member of the 1980 Moscow Olympics winning side Ravinderpal Singh passed away at a Lucknow hospital. He was 61.
  • A two time Olympian – he was also part of the 1984 LA Olympics – the Sitapur-born Singh was only 20 when he became an Olympic gold medallist at Moscow, the last Olympic medal for Indian hockey.

PM pays Tributes to Rabindranath Tagore, Maharana Pratap, Gopal Krishna Gokhale

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to BishwaKavi Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his birth anniversary today. Remembering Nobel laureate Tagore, Mr. Modi said that may the exemplary ideals of the renowned polymath keep giving everyone the strength and inspiration to build the India he dreamt of.
  • Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary is also called Pachishe Boishakh in Bengali. Poet, novelist, essayist, philosopher and musician, Tagore is one of those great masters of literature whose works hardly left any human emotion untouched.
  • Gurudev penned over 2000 songs, which are known as 'Rabindra Sangeet'. He became the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. The coveted honour was bestowed upon him after the publication of his acclaimed collection of poems, Geetanjali.
  • According to the Nobel committee, Tagore was recognised for the prestigious prize "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Former Union Minister Matang Sinh Passes Away

  • Former Union Minister Matang Sinh died because of COVID-19 related complications.
  • A former Rajya Sabha member from Assam, the 58-year-old politician was a close aide of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.
  • He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1992 and served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs from 1994 to 1998 in Rao's government.
  • He was expelled in 1998 on disciplinary grounds after he had made controversial comments against party president Sonia Gandhi.
