Editor of 'Sudharma' Sanskrit Daily, K.V. Sampath Kumar Passes Away

  • Editor of 'Sudharma' Sanskrit Daily, K. V. Sampath Kumar has passed away. He, along with his wife, were awarded the Padma Shri honour by the Government of India in 2020 for their contribution to the field of Literature & Education. He has also received several awards like the Siddarudha award, the Shivaratri Deshikendra Media award, the Abdul Kalam award and others.
  • Sampath Kumar's father Pandit Varadaraja Iyengar had launched 'Sudharma' in 1970. Sudharma is the only Sanskrit Daily in the world, printed and published from Mysuru.

Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Passes Away

  • Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. Defense Secretary and one of the architects of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq in 2003, died at the age of 88 in Taos, New Mexico. Mr. Rumsfeld was Defense Secretary during 1975-1977, during the Gerald Ford administration, and then in the George W. Bush administration, during 2001 – 2006.
  • In 2001, as Defense Secretary, Mr. Rumsfeld oversaw the U.S. strikes in Afghanistan, following the September 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. The U.S. sought to overthrow the Taliban regime which was providing safe haven to terror group Al Qaeda, which was responsible for the September 11 attacks.
  • In 2003, Mr. Rumsfeld was a key player in the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq, ostensibly to prevent Saddam Hussein from developing and deploying weapons of mass destruction.

Vigilance Commissioner Suresh N. Patel Appointed as Acting CVC

  • The incumbent Vigilance Commissioner, Suresh N Patel has been appointed as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) of India in the Central Vigilance Commission with effect. He has been appointed in place of Sanjay Kothari, who completed his term on June 23, 2021. He will remain on the post until the appointment of the new Central Vigilance Commissioner.
  • The Central Vigilance Commission is headed by the CVC and can have a maximum of two vigilance commissioners. Currently, Mr Patel is the only VC in the commission. The Personnel Ministry has invited applications for the posts of CVC and a vigilance commissioner.

John McAfee, Founder of McAfee Antivirus Software, Passes Away

  • British-American Software pioneer, John David McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus software, has passed away. John was found dead in his cell in a jail near Barcelona, where he had been since October 2020, for evading taxes.
  • The incident happened shortly after his extradition to the United States was authorized by Spain's National Court, on criminal charges filed in Tennessee by the Justice Department's tax division. He was accused to have deliberately failed to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018, despite earning millions from consulting work, cryptocurrencies, among other things.

Jamsetji Tata Tops Global List of Top 10 Philanthropists

  • Jamsetji Tata, founder of the Tata Group, has topped the EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century. The report pegs the current value of his donation, mainly to education and healthcare, at $102.4 billion with the start of his key endowments way back in 1892.
  • Tata is the only Indian in the top 10 list. The other Indian among the top 50 is Azim Premji, former chairman of Wipro, who is ranked 12th. Bill Gates & Melinda French Gates, Henry Wellcome, Howard Hughes and Warren Buffett are among the top 5. Mackenzie Scott, the former wife of Jeff Bezos, donated $8.5 billion directly to charities, most ever in a single year by a living donor.
  • The ranking is based on Total Philanthropic Value, calculated as the value of the assets adjusted for inflation, together with the sum of gifts or distributions to date. The data was derived from publicly available sources and in certain cases directly as shared by the foundations.

Former Philippine President Benigno Aquino Passes Away

  • Former Philippine President Benigno Aquino, the son of two of the Southeast Asian country's democracy icons, died in Manila.
  • While in power from 2010 to 2016, he famously took China to court over a long-running dispute involving the South China Sea, parts of which the Philippines claims as the West Philippine Sea.
  • Aquino had been largely silent and out of the public eye after his presidency ended.
