Iceberg A23a on the Move after 30 Years

  • One of the world's biggest iceberg is on the move after more than 30 years being stuck to the ocean floor.
  • The iceberg, called A23a, split from the Antarctic coastline in 1986. But it swiftly grounded in the Weddell Sea, becoming, essentially, an ice island.
  • At almost 4,000 sq km (1,500 sq miles) in area, it's more than twice the size of Greater London.
  • The past year has seen it drifting at speed, and the berg is now about to spill beyond Antarctic waters.

UAE Inaugurates World's Largest Single-site Solar Power Plant ahead of COP28

  • The United Arab Emirates inaugurated the world's largest single-site solar power plant ahead of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). The 2-gigawatt Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic Independent Power Project (IPP) is located 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city and will generate enough electricity to power almost 200,000 homes. The plant is expected to displace 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
  • The project was inaugurated by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi in the presence of Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.

  • Ruto was named alongside the mayor of Sierra Leone's capital Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.
  • Burkinabé-German architect Francis Kéré and Ethiopian climate entrepreneur Kidus Asfaw also made the Time list.
  • The ranking, known as 'Time 100 Climate', is the magazine's inaugural attempt to name those it sees as significant in highlighting and doing something about the issue of climate change across the globe.

Dominica to Create World's First Sperm Whale Reserve

  • Dominica is set to create the world's first sperm whale reserve, designating a swath of ocean where large ships and commercial fishing are restricted and visitors can swim alongside the gentle marine giants.
  • The Caribbean nation hoped the new protected zone of 300 square miles (nearly 800 square kilometres) off its western coast, roughly the size of the island itself, would boost valuable tourism revenue but also help sequester more carbon in the deep sea, an often overlooked benefit of whale conservation.
  • Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on Earth, living in matrilineal societies with distinct cultures and dialects.
