Ladakh Glacier Retreating, May Influence Summer and Winter Pattern

Establishing with observations that the Pensilungpa Glacier located in Zanskar, Ladakh, is retreating due to an increase in the temperature and decrease in precipitation during winters, a study shows how it is possible that the precipitation of summer periods at higher altitudes will change from snow to rain, and that may influence the summer and winter pattern.
Since 2015, a team of scientists from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, has ventured to study the less explored region of the Himalayas, focusing on Zanskar, Ladakh.

Jurassic-Period Crocodile Ancestor Unearthed in Chile

Paleontologists have identified a new genus and species of small-sized mesoeucrocodylian from the fossilized remains found in the Patagonian mountains of southern Chile.
The newly-discovered crocodile species roamed Earth during the Late Jurassic epoch, some 148 million years ago.
The ancient creature lived alongside giant titanosaurs and other sauropod dinosaurs as well as smaller herbivorous species such as Chilesaurus diegosuarezi.
Previously recorded members of non-pelagic Jurassic Mesoeucrocodylia are the presumably fresh-water Atoposauridae, Goniopholididae and Paralligatoridae.

World's Largest Star Sapphire Cluster Found in Sri Lankan

World's largest star sapphire cluster has been found in Ratnapura, Srilanka. The stone is pale blue in colour. It was found by labourers while digging a well in a gem trader's home. Ratnapura is known as the gem capital of the country. The sapphire cluster weighs around 510kgs or 2.5 million carats. It has an estimated value of up to $100 million in the international market.

Massive Melting Event Strikes Greenland

Greenland's enormous ice sheet has been struck by a massive melting event, with enough ice vanishing in a single day to cover the whole of Florida in two inches (5 centimeters) of water.
Since July, roughly 9.37 billion tonnes (8.5 billion metric tonnes) of ice has been lost per day from the surface of the enormous ice sheet, twice its normal average rate of loss during. The huge loss comes after temperatures in north Greenland soared to above 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), which is double the summer average.
High temperatures on July 28 caused the third-largest single-day loss of ice in Greenland since 1950; the second and first biggest single-day losses occurred in 2012 and 2019. Greenland's yearly ice loss began in 1990.

Shantanpara Shalom Hills Blossom with Neelanurinkji Flowers after 12 Years

Idukki`s Shalomkunnu (Shalom Hills) under the Santhanpara Panchayat are blossoming with the blue Neelakurinji flowers, which bloom once every 12 years. Strobilanthes kunthiana, known as Neelakurinji and Kurinji in Malayalam and Tamil, is a shrub that is found in the Shola forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Nilgiris Hills, which means 'blue mountains', got its name from these Neelankurinji flowers. This time over 10 acres of Neelakurinji flowers have covered the Shalomkunnu. However, these hills are not open for tourists this time due to COVID-19.
