Meghalaya's Whistling Village Nominated as 'Best Tourism Village' in India

  • The Ministry of Tourism has nominated Meghalaya's Kongthong village, also known as the 'Whistling village', for the World Tourism Organization's "Best Tourism Villages" award along with two other villages in the country.
  • The two other villages that have been nominated for UNWTO 'Best Tourism Villages' award are--Pochampally in Telangana and Ladhpura Khas in Madhya Pradesh.
  • The feature that makes Kongthon popular among tourists is its ancient tradition, where a mother calls her child by a tune instead of a name, like--Eeooow, Ooeeo, etc. In this village, people have two names - original name and a song name, which also has two versions - a short song and a long song.
  • The village, with its mesmerising beauty, attracts a number of tourists every year.

IRCTC to Launch India's First Luxury Cruise Liner

  • The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will start India's first indigenous cruise liner from September 18.
  • IRCTC has joined hands and signed the agreement with Cordelia Cruises being operated by M/s Waterways Leisure Tourism Pvt. Ltd for promotion and marketing of the first indigenous luxury cruise in India. This is another incredible luxury travel offering under IRCTC's umbrella of tourism services to the public.

Air India Starts First Ever Non-stop Hyderabad-London Flight

  • Air India is set to commence its first ever non-stop service between Hyderabad and London, with the first flight arriving here from the UK capital.
  • The same flight will depart to London strengthening the connectivity on the India-UK sector.
  • The flight will operate twice a week with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with a capacity of 256 seats, including 18 in Business Class and 238 in Economy Class configuration. The flight from Hyderabad to London will operate twice a week on Mondays and Fridays.
  • The total flight time on this route will be 10 hours and 30 minutes from Hyderabad to London and 9 hours 20 minutes from London to Hyderabad.
  • At present, Air India operates non-stop flights to London from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Amritsar, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Goa.

Rajasthan Ties up with Incredible India

  • The Rajasthan Tourism Department has joined hands with Incredible India, the Centre's official tourism handle, to promote tourism in the state. This is a one-of-a-kind collaboration that seeks to promote a state on a large scale and reach out to maximum people. The collaboration will emphasise domestic tourism and align it to various aspects of Rajasthan.
  • Incredible India uploaded the first collaborative post that highlighted Rajasthan's scenic destinations, including the monsoon destinations in south Rajasthan such as Banswara, Udaipur, and Mount Abu.
  • The state government has already taken various steps to promote tourism in Rajasthan, especially after the outbreak of Covid-19 crippled the sector.
  • The state is setting up 10 cultural tourism hubs in western Rajasthan's Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur districts using the 'Art of Life' methodology.

Varanasi-Chunar Cruise Service Begins to Boost Tourism

  • The Varanasi-Chunar Cruise service which started in September 2021 has added a new dimension to the tourism facilities in Varanasi.
  • This cruise service in Ganga River runs from Varanasi to historic Chunar Fort in Mirzapur.
  • Tourists travelling to Varanasi can now travel around 30 km long journey in River Ganga.
  • State government is further planning to extend this journey till Sangam in Prayagraj.
  • Chunar Fort is located in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. Chunar town is also situated below the fort. Both the places are historic places with common history and legends. The history span of the fort is from 56 BC and between Afghan decedent Sher Shah Suri's rule, the Mughal Empire rule, as well as the Maratha rule in 1782 to 1804. British Raj occupied this fort till 1947 when India gained independence.
