Ministry of Culture Organises PAN-India Programme "Jharokha"

  • Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Textiles organised a programme called "Jharokha-Compendium of Indian handicraft/ handloom, art and culture" to celebrate the traditional Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and art & culture. To begin with, the first event under this celebration was organised in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh at Rani Kamlapati Railway Station.
  • Jharokha is a PAN India programme that would be held at 16 locations in 13 states and UTs, as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • The event in Bhopal celebrated womanhood and the contribution of women in the field of art, craft and culture.
  • Kamlapati Railway Station is named after the brave and fearless Queen Kamlapati of the Gond kingdom of Madhya Pradesh.

Kerala Kaliyattam Festival

  • The Kaliyattam festival is an annual Theyyam festival held in the temples in Kerala's Malabar region.
  • Theyyam is the name of a grand dance festival that is held in different parts of Kerala, including Kasargod.
  • Theyyam consists of thousand-year-old rituals, traditions, and customs. The people of these districts where this festival is celebrated consider Theyyam as a channel to a god and they thus seek blessings.
  • There are around 456 different varieties of Theyyam. Males perform Theyyam, with the exception of the Devakoothu Theyyam, which is the only Theyyam ritual done by women. It can only be seen at the Thekkumbad Kulom temple.
  • In the North Malabar region of Kerala, Theyyam is performed. The North Malabar region consists of present-day Kannur Districts, Kasargod, Vadakara and Koyilandy Taluks of Kozhikode and Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad.

PM Modi Unveils RK Laxman Museum

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated R.K. Laxman Art Gallery-Museum' at Balewadi, Pune, dedicated to the legendary cartoonist who passed away in January 2015. and also inaugurated the new Pune Metro Rail Project.
  • The museum highlight is a miniature model based on the fictional village of Malgudi which will be made alive through the audio-visual effect. Cartoons with the famed 'You Said It' logo, drawn by Laxman would be showcased here.

Craft Safari in Kashmir: A Move to Revive State's Centuries Old Hand-made Craft

  • Kashmir handmade craft, which is world-famous and helped Srinagar city to get recognised as the UNESCO's Creative City in the field of craft and art, is being revived now. The Jammu Kashmir government, under the Kashmir handicraft department, started a process in a unique way to give new life to those world-famous dying craft of Kashmir.
  • Craft Safari is a new way adopted by authorities for the revival of the cultural heritage of Kashmir.
  • The handicraft department makes sure that the safari members create awareness about those crafts. The craft safari included visiting artisans of crafts like Paper Mache, Woodcarving, Pottery, Silverware, Copperware, NamdhaKari, Pashmina and Silk Carpets. This is to boost the historic heritage crafts of Kashmir and give them a better market because for the last two decades those heritage crafts have seen slow death due to the non-availability of the market.

Shrine Found in Jordanian Desert is 9,000 Years Old

  • Archaeologists uncovered a 9,000-year-old shrine in Jordan's eastern desert that was likely used in the practice of religious hunting rituals.
  • The site lies in the Khashabiyeh Mountains, located in the eastern Al-Jafr Basin.
  • A team of Jordanian and French archaeologists excavated the site in 2021 and found a variety of artifacts and geologic treasures, including 150 marine fossils, animal figurines, well-made flint tools, an altar and hearth, and two large stones with carved, human facial features. The team also discovered an architectural model of a "desert kite," a type of mass trap used to capture wild gazelles and deer.

ISRO Chairman Inaugurates Renovated Space Museum

  • S. Somanath, chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), inaugurated the renovated Space Museum at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). He also declared the museum open to the public. VSSC director S. Unnikrishnan Nair and other senior officials were present.
