First Arab Woman Graduate NASA Training for the Moon

  • Nora AlMatrooshi became the first Arab woman to graduate from NASA's training program, ready to blast off into the cosmos.
  • AlMatrooshi, a mechanical engineer by training who has worked in the oil industry, was one of two astronaut candidates chosen by the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) in 2021 to enroll in a training program with US space agency NASA.
  • Now, after two years of hard work -- including practice spacewalks -- AlMatrooshi, her fellow Emirati Mohammad AlMulla and 10 others in their training class are fully qualified astronauts.
  • The group, known as "The Flies," are now eligible for NASA missions to the International Space Station (ISS), Artemis launches to the Moon and, if all goes well, to even fly to Mars.

Naveen Patnaik Introduces 'Nabin Magic Card' to Empower UG, PG Students

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the 'Nabin Magic Card' designed for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. To commemorate the 108th birth anniversary of the CM's father, Biju Patnaik, the initiative was launched.
  • Inaugurating the web portal, Patnaik referred to the youth as the nation's wealth and expressed his government's desire for them to recognise their potential.
  • He stated that the 'Nabin Odisha Magic Card' would aid in students' personal development, alleviate the financial strain on parents, and foster avenues for career advancement and employment opportunities.
  • With the smartcard, students will have access to WiFi services, mobile phone recharging, online tutoring, as well as discounts on book purchases and travel fare concessions for buses, trains, and planes.

NPCI Joins Hands with IISc to Conduct Joint Research on Blockchain, AI

  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) signed a multi-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, for conducting joint research on blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
  • The partnership will also propel further innovation through the establishment of the 'NPCI-IISc Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Deep Tech Research and Development'.
  • The partnership will also focus on scalable blockchain platforms and multi-modal analytics over fintech data. Faculty members from five departments at IISc will work with NPCI researchers on practical challenges related to these areas.

Union Minister Inaugurates Three CIPET Centres across India

  • Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers and Health and Family Welfare, Mansukh Mandaviya, virtually inaugurated three centres of the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET) from New Delhi. These centres, located in Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, are significant additions to CIPET's network.
  • Mandaviya noted that CIPET has been instrumental in providing employment opportunities to the youth, with almost 100% placement rates in the petrochemical sector for its trained graduates.
  • He highlighted the expansion of CIPET from offering certificate and diploma courses to now providing undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD level programs.
  • The government's efforts to increase the number of CIPET centres from 23 to 47 over the last decade underscore its commitment to supporting the petrochemical industry's growth.

IIT Guwahati Strengthens International Ties with Universities in Canada, Japan

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Guwahati bolstered its global partnerships by signing four Memorandums of Understanding with renowned international educational institutions. The institute took a significant step towards improving knowledge exchange by formalising collaborations with Dalhousie University, Canada and Gifu University, Japan. All the MoUs were signed for 5 years and may be further extended based on mutual understanding.
  • This innovative collaboration marked the inception of joint doctoral programmes designed to foster dynamic research collaborations between scholars and students from both institutions. By facilitating exchange programmes for students and academic staff, fostering joint research activities, and promoting the sharing of research materials, this partnership aims to cultivate a rich academic environment conducive to groundbreaking discoveries and academic excellence.

Eight Universities Granted Graded Autonomy by University Grants Commission

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) released a notice regarding the list of universities that were granted autonomy under the University Grants Commission (Categorisation of Universities (only) for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018. The notice was issued on the official website of the UGC. As per the notice, four universities received Category 1 autonomy and 4 universities received Category 2 autonomy.
  • The universities that were granted autonomy by UGC are Central University of Rajasthan - Category – 1, Central Sanskrit University - Category – 1, University of Delhi - Category – 1, Central University of South Bihar - Category – 1, University of Hyderabad - Category – 2, Maulana Azad National Urdu University - Category – 2, Central University of Punjab - Category – 2 and Central University of Himachal Pradesh- Category – 2.
  • These universities were given autonomy based on several factors, such as academic performance, research output, infrastructure, etc.

REC Limited Joins Hands with UNISED to Support Education of Children in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pra...

  • REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power and a leading Non-Banking Finance Company, partnered with the Unit of Science and Educational Development (UNISED) to support the education of around 75,500 children of Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. REC entered into this partnership through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm REC Foundation. REC committed a financial assistance of Rs. 9.91 crores towards this noble cause.
  • The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between REC Foundation and UNISED was signed during a ceremony held in New Delhi. The agreement was finalised by Head of CSR at REC Foundation, Mr. Bhupesh Chandolia and Assistant Programme Director at UNISED, Ms. Rashmi Kumari, thus helping solidify UNISED's commitment to improving educational opportunities for underprivileged children.

Tinder, Yuvaa Jointly Launch 'Let's Talk Consent' Course on Coursera

  • This 90-minute multimedia course utilises surveys, assignments, and real-life examples to offer a nuanced understanding of consent in everyday situations. Five modules within the course cover:

  • Setting and enforcing personal boundaries
  • Recognising signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships via red, green and gray flags
  • Navigating online and offline interactions with safety and respect

IIM-Bodh Gaya, Medanta Sign MoU to Enhance MBA Hospital & Healthcare Management

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bodh Gaya joined forces with Medanta, a hospital chain, to make the MBA (Hospital & Healthcare Management) programme industry relevant.
  • IIM Bodh Gaya started the industry specific two year full-time MBA (Hospital & Healthcare Management) programme in 2023. With the new partnership, subject matter experts from Medanta will deliver lectures on relevant topics to the students which will enrich the programme content by incorporating and discussing real life cases as part of the course delivery.
  • Medanta will also offer summer internships to the students of IIM Bodh Gaya enrolled in the MBA (Hospital & Healthcare Management) programme at its hospital and healthcare facilities across India and abroad.
