Karnataka High Court Allows Board Exams for Classes 5, 8 and 9

  • The division bench of the Karnataka High Court allowed the state government to conduct board exams for Classes 5, 8, and 9 under state syllabus, thus setting aside the single bench order that quashed the government's order to conduct examinations.
  • The High Court also directed the state government to begin the process of examination from the point where it was stopped.
  • The High Court also ordered that the state government hold consultation with all stakeholders in the future before conducting the board examinations for the upcoming years. However, the Registered Unaided Private Schools Association (RUPSA) has decided to move the Supreme Court again challenging the division bench order of the High Court.

IIT Kharagpur Launches Cutting-edge MTech in Artificial Intelligence

  • IIT Kharagpur, under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), DST, Government of India, introduced a groundbreaking MTech programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

  • The new IIT Kharagpur MTech course, offered through GATE papers DA, CS, EC, and EE, spans four semesters.

Parul University Spearheads Women Empowerment with Sahiyar Gram Hatt and Sanjeevani Initiative

  • Parul University, a renowned academic institution, is engaged in social upliftment initiatives for several years now. The university's Social Responsive Cell launched two new initiatives, namely, Sanjeevani – Parul Mahila Credit Cooperative Society and Sahiyar Gram Hatt, aimed at empowering and uplifting women in the community.
  • Sanjeevani – Parul Mahila Credit Cooperative Society aims to financially empower over 1,000 women by providing them with monthly credit and savings facilities. The cooperative society will be run by women, for women, and will cover women working in various fields such as housekeeping, security, peons, and hostel wardens. The initiative aims to meet women's basic financial needs and help them achieve economic viability through effective money management.
  • The Sahiyar Gram Hatt is an exhibition and sale fair that aims to provide women with opportunities to showcase and sell their products. The fair includes markets for the sale of products made by women groups, artisans, and organisations. Women are given table spaces or stalls to sell their products with low overhead costs, establishing long-term relationships with their customers and the market.

CBSE Disaffiliates 20 Schools after Malpractice Found during Surprise Inspection

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) took stringent action against schools found engaging in malpractices, disaffiliating 20 and downgrading three across the country. According to CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta, this move came after surprise inspections revealed discrepancies in adherence to affiliation and examination norms.
  • Among the affected schools, five are located in Delhi, while others are spread across Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Dehradun, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, schools in Delhi, Punjab, and Assam faced affiliation downgrades.

NCERT set to Release New Syllabus for Classes 3 and 6

  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is gearing up to unveil a revamped curriculum for students in Classes 3 and 6, slated to be implemented from the academic session 2024-25.
  • Recognising the significance of Class 3 as the beginning of preparatory stages and Class 6 as the onset of middle school, NCERT has devised a 'bridge programme' for Class 6 and provided concise guidelines for Class 3, catering to schools affiliated with CBSE, KVS, and NVS.

BHU to Start 4 year UG Programme from 2024-25

  • The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will be implementing the four year undergraduate programme, for both honors and research, namely UG Honors and UG Honors with research from the academic session 2024-25. This decision was taken in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • As per the proposal, only 10 per cent of the total admitted students with a CGPA of 7.5 and above will be permitted to select UG honours with research based on merit. The proposed programmes focus on overall growth of students in order to shape them into responsible citizens, who are able to make best use of their university education in terms of their individual and professional growth, the institute stated.
  • Those completing UG Honors with Research at BHU will become eligible for the PhD programme without having to pursue a postgraduate degree. The proposed programme gives students flexibility in choice of minor courses from a large range of options.

UP Government, Consortium for Technical Education Partner to Promote IT Innovation

  • The Consortium for Technical Education (CTE) and the Department of Technical Education (DTE), Government of Uttar Pradesh, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote awareness, enhance employability skills and stimulate innovation in Information Technology and Cybersecurity.
  • The MoU outlines the framework for both parties to collaborate in instrumenting the socio-economic development of Uttar Pradesh via IT education and digital skill training programs. CTE will undertake various activities including setting up and operating a "Centre of Excellence" in IT and Cybersecurity, designing courses and curriculum by industry subject experts accompanied by interactive video-based courses, virtual labs and hands-on workshops, deploying industrial experienced instructors at CoE, providing joint certification, arranging optional industry certification, conducting faculty development programs, and offering internship opportunities.

IIT Delhi, Flipkart to Conduct Joint Research for Personalised Recommendations

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and Flipkart signed an agreement as part of Flipkart's ongoing industry-academic alliance initiatives.
  • As a part of this partnership, Flipkart will offer research grants and market insights to the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi's industry interface organisation, to generate granular, data-backed segments of users linked to different e-commerce categories based on shopping behaviour, demographics, surrounding users' behaviour, etc.
  • On the technical front, the collaborative effort will help in developing a general purpose user activity graph that could be harnessed for different use cases leveraging state-of-the-art GNN (graph neural network) based techniques.
  • The research aims to address the limitation of existing persona creation tools and to learn from a user activity graph that encompasses information about the various personas associated with each user.

  • The five-month online learning programme, comprising 55 hours, is geared towards mid-career professionals, equipping them with essential skills to thrive in the rapidly growing electric vehicle industry.
