Bihar Govt. Launches 'Pyaar ka Paudha' Campaign

  • Ahead of Valentine's Day, 'Pyaar ka Paudha' (a plant of love) campaign was launched by the Bihar government's Department of Environment and Forest in Patna, to encourage the practice of planting trees in the state.
  • Principal Secretary, Forest department Bihar, Dipak Kumar said, "We have put stalls in several places in Patna and will slowly expand it to other cities. It's good for the environment and climate."
  • Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change that comes under the Bihar government on February 12 took to Twitter and said, "Nature controls the trees and plants. Take a pledge to make the earth green. We humbly request you to gift one plant of love to your closed ones and provide a good care. Through this campaign, your small effort will be a big step towards making the Bihar land green.

Cabinet Approves Pesticide Management Bill, 2020 and Major Ports Authority Bill, 2020

  • The cabinet approved Pesticide Management Bill, 2020 to benefit farmers and Major Ports Authority Bill, 2020 to resolve disputes related to sea ports. Now, both Bills would be introduced in Parliament during the upcoming second phase of the Budget session beginning on March 2.
  • Pesticide Management Bill, 2020 which will protect the interests of farmers against spurious pesticides is seeks to replace the Insecticides Act, 1968, for regulating the pesticide sector by fixing prices and setting up an authority. The bill also intends to promote organic pesticides along with a proposal of imprisonment of up to five years, up from two years at present, for Pesticide companies, in case of any violation of rules and regulations.
  • Major Ports Authority Bill, 2020 seeks amendment to the Major Port Trust Act, 1963 to resolve disputes between port issues as well as to ensure the export in the international market.

Bill to Include more Tribes in ST Category

  • Parliament passed a bill to include certain tribal communities in Karnataka in the Scheduled Tribe category.
  • The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed in Lok Sabha by voice vote, while Rajya Sabha had already approved it in the previous session.
  • It seeks to include Parivara and Talawara tribal communities in the ST category to ensure they get reservation and other benefits provided by the government.
  • Siddi tribes of Belagavi, Dharwad would also be included in the ST category apart from those living in Uttar Kannada districts.
  • The amendments have been made in the list of STs in Karnataka.
  • As per Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda, the legislation was brought in relation to one state and assured the members, many of whom sought inclusion of communities from there states into the Scheduled Tribes, that the government will take cognisance of their demands.

SC upholds constitutional validity of SC/ST Amendment Act, 2018

  • The Supreme Court Monday upheld the constitutional validity of SC/ST Amendment Act, 2018 saying a court can grant anticipatory bail only in cases where a prima facie case is not made out.
  • A preliminary inquiry is not essential before lodging an FIR under the Act nor is the approval of senior police officials.
  • Every citizen needs to treat fellow citizens equally and foster the concept of fraternity.
  • A court could quash the FIR if a prima facie case is not made out under the SC/ST Act and the liberal use of anticipatory bail will defeat the intention of Parliament.

Sanction of Electric Charging Stations Under Fame India-II Scheme

  • Department of Heavy Industry has sanctioned 2,636 Electric Vehicles (EVs) charging stations in 62 cities across 24 States/UTs under FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in India) scheme phase II.
  • In Andhra Pradesh, 92 charging stationshave been sanctioned to Vijayawada, 71 charging stations to Vishakhapatnam, 68 charging stations to Tirupati and 35 charging stations to Kakinada.
  • In Telangana, 118 chargingStationshave been sanctioned to City of Hyderabad, 10 each charging stations to cities of Warangal and Karimnagar.
  • This information was given by the Minister of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Prakash Javadekar.

AP Govt. Creates History with 'Intivadhakey Pension' Scheme

  • The Andhra Pradesh (AP) state Government created a record with its 'Intivadhakey Pension' (Pension to your Doorstep) Scheme by covering 94 % of about 60 lakh pensioners at their doorstep within a few days. The scheme was launched in 13 districts on February 1, 2020.
  • AP is the 1st state in India to take up such an initiative of door delivery of pension service.
  • The AP government pays a monthly pension of Rs. 2,250 to the elderly, widows, weavers, toddy tappers, fishermen, single women and traditional cobblers and others, Rs. 3,000 for disabled and Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 for CKDU(Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) of uncertain origin) /Dialysis patients.
