Mastercard Ropes Magnus Carlsen as its Global Ambassador

  • The financial services company, Mastercard Inc. named Magnus Carlsen, the highest-rated chess player of all time, as its global brand ambassador. This step is part of a move by Mastercard for adding chess in its coveted list of sports sponsorship. It has joined the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour as an official partner, in its first sponsorship move into chess.
  • The Norwegian chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen joined the like of other competitive players' line-up of ambassadors like Lionel Messi, Naomi Osaka, Crystal Dunn and Dan Carter.

Padma Shri Recipient Bala Balachandran Passes Away

  • Bala V. Balachandran, founder chairman and dean (emeritus) of Great Lakes Institute of Management passed away at Chicago.
  • He was also a J L Kellogg distinguished professor of accounting and information management (emeritus in service), Northwestern University.
  • He helped recruit the first set of faculty members to IIM Bangalore in the late 1960s and also set up the management department at the MDI at Gurgaon through a joint collaboration with UNDP, Wharton and Kellogg. Working closely with N Chandrababu Naidu, his vision for a one-year-fast-track MBA program for working professionals was realized with the ISB in 2000 where he was on the Dean-search, faculty and curriculum committees.
  • In 2004, he trained his sights on his native Tamil Nadu to set up Great Lakes Institute of Management which today has another campus at Gurgaon and is considered as one of the top B-schools in the country. He received Padma Shri in 2001 for his contribution to education.

Golgo 13: Manga Creator Takao Saito Passes Away

Manga artist Takao Saito, who created the longest-running Japanese comic book series of all time, died aged 84.
Saito's best-known work was Golgo 13, the tale of a professional hitman, first published in 1968 and later adapted into games and films.
Its 201st edition came out in July 2021, breaking the Guinness world record for the most volumes ever published of a single manga series.
Born in western Japan in 1936, Saito had his first manga cartoon published in 1955, while he was working as a barber.
The success of another of his works, 1960's Typhoon Goro, led him to move from Osaka to Tokyo and launch his own production company.

Women's Rights Activist Kamla Bhasin Passes Away

  • Eminent women's rights activist, poet and author Kamla Bhasin passed away. She was 75.
  • Bhasin has been a prominent voice in the women's movement in India and other South Asian countries.
  • Kamla Bhasin's death is a big setback for the women's movement in India and the South Asian region.

Manika Sheokand is Haryana's Ambassador for Save Water Campaign

  • The Haryana Government appointed Femina Miss Grand India-2021 Manika Sheokand as the goodwill ambassador for Water Conservation Campaign.
  • Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar handed over appointment letter and an agreement to Manika at a programme organised at Haryana Niwas.

Ex-Arunachal Governor Y. S. Dadwal Passes Away

  • Former Commissioner of Delhi Police, Yudhvir Singh Dadwal, has passed away. He was 70.
  • Dadwal, an Indian Police Service officer of the 1974-batch, served as the 16th police commissioner of Delhi from July 2007 to November 2010. Notably, the Commonwealth Games were held in Delhi during his tenure.
  • After serving as the Delhi Police chief, he was appointed as the Director-General of the Central Paramilitary Force, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) in November 2010. After retiring from the services, he was also appointed as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in 2016.

Arunachal Pradesh Advocate General Nilay Dutta Passes Away

  • Arunachal Pradesh Advocate General Nilay Dutta died of a massive heart attack in Coorg, Karnataka. He was 68 years old.
  • Dutta had studied at St. Stephen's College in Delhi and was later involved in the Naxalite movement, for which he was arrested and imprisoned. After his release, he became a bank employee and then a lawyer. He had held the post of Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh since 2016.
  • Passionate about sports, Dutta has served as President of the Assam Cricket Association and has refereed several international cricket matches. He was also a member of the Union Interior Ministry's High Level Committee (HLC) on Term 6 of the Assam Accord.
