World's Oldest Fossil Trees Uncovered

  • The earliest fossilised trees, dating back 386 million years, have been found at an abandoned quarry in New York.
  • Scientists believe the forest they belonged to was so vast it originally stretched beyond Pennsylvania.
  • This discovery in Cairo, New York, is thought to be two or three million years older than what was previously the world's oldest forest at Gilboa, also in New York State.
  • The findings throw new light on the evolution of trees.

Researchers Extract Air Dating Back to the 1870s in Antarctica

  • A team of researchers extracted more than 194 cubic feet of air that was trapped beneath the surface ice in Antarctica. The samples represented the largest collection of air dating from the 1870s. It is expected that the air samples will help to learn more about the composition of the atmosphere throughout history. It will help to measure the changes in the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG).

Australia Sees Hottest Day Ever

  • Australia experienced its hottest day on record and the heat wave is expected to worsen, exacerbating an already unprecedented bushfire season.
  • The average nationwide temperatures of 40.9 degrees Celsius beat the previous record of 40.3 degrees Celsius in January 2013.
  • The heat wave is another alarm bell about global warming in Australia.

Coldest Day in 22 Years

  • December 17, 2019 was bitingly cold in Delhi. It was so chilly that the temperature recorded at 2 pm was only 1.8 degrees more than that recorded at 3 am, making the day the coldest in 22 years.
  • According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature on Tuesday was 12.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 10.4 degrees Celsius.
  • Scientists said that temperature hit the lowest since December 28,1997, when the maximum (day) temperature had touched 11.3 degrees Celsius.

Anak Krakatau: Giant Blocks of Rock Litter Ocean Floor

  • Shattered remnants from the volcano that generated a devastating tsunami in Indonesia a year ago have been pictured on the seafloor for the first time.
  • Scientists used sonar equipment to image the giant chunks of rock that slid into the ocean when one side of Anak Krakatau collapsed.
  • Some of these blocks are 70-90 m high.
  • Over 400 people around the Sunda Strait died in the nighttime disaster, and thousands more were injured and/or displaced.

Deforestation is up in Brazil

  • According to government data, deforestation in Brazil's Amazon jumped to the highest level for the month of November since 2015. Destruction of the world's largest tropical rainforest totalled 563 square km in November, 2019 103% more than in the same month last year.

Climate Crisis Set to Increasingly Impact Migration

  • According a report published by by the UN's migration monitor, the impact of climate crisis on migration is expected to increase in the coming years.
  • In its Global Migration Report 2020, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) pointed out that anthropogenic climate change, originating in human activity, is expected to increasingly affect migration. The report found increasing evidence that the magnitude and frequency of extreme weather events are rising, and this is expected to increasingly affect migration.
