Ministry of Tourism launches "DekhoApnaDesh" webinar series

  • The ministry of tourism launched the Dekho Apna Desh webinar series.
  • The ministry said the webinar series will provide information on the many destinations and the 'depth' and 'expanse' of the culture and heritage of India. The first webinar touched upon the history of Delhi and was titled " City of Cities- Delhi's Personal Diary'.
  • The ministry said owing to COVID-19, tourism is hugely impacted with no domestic or international movement. But owing to technology, it is possible to visit places and destinations virtually and plan travels for a later date.

Cabinet Approves MOU Between India And Germany To Enhance Railway Sector

  •  The Union Cabinet approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Germany which was signed between the two countries to extend technological cooperation in the railway sector. The MoU was signed between the Ministry of Railways and the DB Engineering and Consulting GMBH of Germany earlier this year in February.
  • The cabinet chaired by PM Modi gave a nod to this agreement between the two countries. 
  • The agreement would help the Indian Railways develop into a modern, competitive railway organization by improving its organizational structures along with providing IT solutions to undergo this railway reformation. It will also help the railways to streamline their operations, their marketing, and their sales along with strengthing its administrative process, predictive maintenance, private train operations and any other areas which may be mutually agreed in writing between the two sides.

Tourism Industry Set to Suffer a Loss of over Rs. 15k crore

  • According to early estimates, India is staring at a potential loss of over Rs. 15,000 crore to the tourism industry because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has led to global travel restrictions and forced foreign vacationers to cancel airline reservations and hotel bookings.
  • As the health crisis is expected to linger, the final numbers could far exceed the amount. To counter the setback, the Centre is working on a revival plan for the tourism industry.
  • The culture ministry shut down all centrally protected monuments to the public until March 31 in its latest measure to stanch the coronavirus.

Tense Times for Tourism and Hospitality Industry

  • The travel and hospitality sector is facing the heat with the deadly Covid-19 spreading not only to Europe and Iran but also to India, with bookings being cancelled or rescheduled at a fast pace.
  • Operators such as Thomas Cook, SOTC, FCM Travel Solutions, Yatra and MakeMyTrip admitted their businesses have been hit. They are offering the option of deferring trips or availing future travel vouchers, refunds and even alternative destinations to Indian travellers who have booked on the China and South-East Asia route.
  • Till now predominantly the Asian continent was impacted with travellers cancelling and rescheduling travel. Now rising reports from Italy, Spain, and Switzerland mean that the popular Europe sector will also be impacted. No authority is coming out and declaring if a particular country is safe to travel to and this is adding to the travel fears.

Indian Railways Launches its First 'Restaurant on Wheels' at Asansol Railway Station

  • Indian Railways launched its first 'Restaurant on Wheels' at the circulating area of Asansol railway station for the use of passengers as well as the general public.
  • The Restaurant on Wheels was developed by refurbishing two over-aged MEMU coaches.
  • Supriyo also inaugurated two new air-conditioned Retiring Rooms and Electronic Reservation Chart Display System and a battery-operated car at Asansol station.
