India's First War Memorial for Animals

  • A war memorial that is being planned in Meerut is set to feature a heroine who lost her life in a counter-insurgency operation in Kashmir in 2016.
  • It is also likely to feature some others who acquitted themselves creditably in the Kargil war India fought with Pakistan in 1999.
  • What makes the memorial unique is that it is devoted to service animals, mostly dogs, but also horses and mules. It will be the country's first animal war memorial and recognise heroics on the battlefield, devotion to duty and outstanding contribution to military service alongside soldiers.
  • The memorial will come up at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College in Meerut where the army breeds, rears, and trains dogs, mules and horses.

Ghent Altarpiece: Lamb's 'Alarmingly Humanoid' Face Surprises Art World

  • The restoration of a prized 15th Century painting has revealed the "human-like face of a lamb", surprising art critics and spurring debate.
  • The Ghent Altarpiece, completed by Hubert and Jan Van Eyck in 1432, has captivated the art world for centuries.
  • Housed at St. Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, it is seen as the first major oil painting to gain global fame.
  • Since 2012, a 2.2m euro (£1.8m; $2.4m) project to restore the artwork has been taking place at a museum in Belgium.
  • In the second phase of the project, which ended last month, restorers made some unexpected discoveries.
  • Restorers found that the central panel of the artwork, known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, had been painted over in the 16th Century.
  • Another artist had altered the Lamb of God, a symbol for Jesus depicted at the centre of the panel.
  • Now conservationists have stripped away the overpaint, revealing the lamb's "intense gaze" and "large frontal eyes".

The visitors of the exhibition will find architectural and conjectural reconstructions, recreations of socio-cultural traditions and life of Hampi and also many more murals. Through this, the exhibition will take heritage to wider population. It has overcome the barrier that heritage was restricted only to research. When the reach of significance of heritage increases, accountability of citizens increases. This will help to protect age old structures and monuments in a better way.

Oldest Known Sketch of Venice Unearthed

  • A Renaissance historian has unearthed the oldest known image of Venice dating from the 14th century, showing how even then the city of canals gripped the imagination of visitors.
  • Sandra Toffolo, a researcher at the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland, found the sketch in a manuscript describing Italian pilgrim Niccolo da Poggibonsi's 1346-1350 voyage to Jerusalem which took him through the bustling port city.
  • The discovery of this view of the city is of great importance for our understanding of images of Venice, because it shows that even from very early on, the city held great fascination for contemporaries.
